Misc. Notes regarding marriages/partners
Some years after the death of James Harvey Mayes, a comrade of Co. D, 7th Virginia Cavalry, John Short had relations with Mayes' widow, Sarah Ellen Painter Mayes. There is no record that they were married, though, in the possession of the author of this page, there is a photo of the two of them that has an inscription on the back that noting that at the time they were calling Sarah "Grandma Short."
