Page County Civil War Remembrance Society

Mission and Goals of the
Page County Civil War Remembrance Society

The years 1861-1865 were traumatic years for many who resided in Page County, Virginia, and for a wide range of reasons. To understand the war and the hardships faced by these Page County citizens, it must be understood that, despite the fact that the county was a part of Virginia under the Confederate States of America, not everyone wanted the war or wanted to be a part of the Southern Confederacy. Many, in fact, wanted no part of the war, one way or the other - wanting neither to be part of the war on the side of the Union or the side of the Confederacy. In the case of Page County, this was rarely the result of religious objection, but rather the result of simple farmers and laborers who wanted nothing more but to survive and see that they and their families would make it through that most difficult time. Likewise, it should be noted that while over 1,500 local men served in Confederate artillery, cavalry, infantry, militia, and reserve companies, in no way does their service indicate that all who were members of these organizations were loyal or devoted to the Confederate Cause.

Therefore, instead of honoring one group of people alone, we recognize the trials and tribulations of all people who lived in the county, to include:

~ Children
~ Disaffected or disenchanted Confederates
~ Free Blacks
~ Local blacks who served in the United States Colored Troops regiments
~ Local blacks who served in the local Confederate companies
~ Loyal Confederate soldiers
~ Loyal Unionists
~ Reluctant "Rebels"
~ Slaves
~ Union soldiers native to Page County
~ Women

Members of our society include descendants of all of the above listed groups of people as well as those who hold a passionate interest in preserving the local history as it relates to the experience of Page Countians in the American Civil War.
