A Letter from Robert MooreDear Fellow Compatriots:
There is no substitute for teamwork and we have demonstrated it in a great way! To see nearly half of our camp out at the latest setting of headstones was inspirational. Not only did secure two headstones for the men we wished to honor (one being Capt. Summers for whom were are half-named), we cleaned the cemetery, pulled-out a tremendous cedar stump and repaired the fence within less than two hours!
It is interesting to look back to 1906 when the first appearance of the original camp came to light in the Confederate Veteran. It seemed to be the primary goal of the camp back then to make sure that all Confederates buried in the county had a headstone. Their particular focus was on soldiers from other units from outside the county that had died in Page during the war and were not properly marked with a headstone. Regretfully, they were not able to complete the task of marking the graves, perhaps due to lack of resources. Though the camp appears to have folded before World War I, they did leave us a legacy and a "roadmap" from which we work today.
To date, as a camp we have set over half-a-dozen headstones with many more to follow. It is indeed heartwarming to honor these men, no matter where they hailed from. It is also an honor to continue and complete the work of the forefathers of our camp. While we remember the men in gray, let us also not forget the original "Sons" who were the very spearhead of our organization at the beginning of the 20th century.
