About the Book:

The third in this series, this volume concentrates heavily on early sketches of life in Page County as recalled by those who experienced it firsthand in the early 19th century. There are also a large number of articles examining slavery and the experiences of a number of slaves in the county as well as an in-depth look at the stone block in Luray that appears to have been mistakenly proported by some over time to have served as a slave auction block. Other articles discuss county residents in the Philippine War and World War II while biographical sketches examine the Amiss, Barbee, Caton, Rust, and Shuler families as well as the lives of Harry M. Strickler and Rev. Henry Marvin Wharton. There is also a wonderful in-depth study of the history of Luray's historic "Cliff Cottage" and the famous residents that resided in the home since the middle 19th century. The book closes with fascinating tales of ghosts and witches in Page County.
