Caroline Artillery

A Brief History of the Battery

Under the command of Capt. Thomas Rowe Thornton, this Caroline County battery was organized originally on July 23, 1861. Serving throughout the war as an independant company and attached to Lightfoot's Battalion, the battery spent most of its service as part of the Richmond Defenses or the "Palace Guard" and fought in the battles around Richmond from 1864 - 65.

For more detailed information on this company, and the men who fought in it, I recommend
