JOHN PATTON MCCLELLAN

The first ancestor in my McClellan line is John Patton McClellan who was born 1810 in South Carolina. He married Mary Ann Glasgow in 1833 in Abbeville, South Carolina. They moved to Mississippi where they both died in the 1870's. They had nine children but at this point the descendants have not all been traced. Several of the children remained in Mississippi, and little is known about them. The children as I know them are:

  1. JAMES SAMUEL MCCLELLAN

JAMES SAMUEL MCCLELLAN 1834-1930

James Samuel McClellan was born November 13, 1834 in 96th District of South Carolina and died March 3, 1930 in New Edinburg, Arkansas. He married Hulda Scott Mathis December 10, 1854. Little is known of her family at this time except Hulda was born September 12, 1835 in Mississippi.

From the Clan McClellan Files: James Samuel McClellan migrated to Cleveland County Arkansas in early 1861 from Holmes County Mississippi, He served in Company D 2nd Arkansas Cavalry 1862-1865. He was captured at the seige of Vicksburg.

    SENATOR JOHN LITTLE MCCLELLAN

John L. McClellan was the youngest person to pass the Arkansas Bar Exam and become a lawyer. From an early age he learned to love the court system and legal profession. When John arrived in Washington, he was considered a rural Arkansas lawyer who would be of little national importance. However, he became one of the most powerful forces in Washington. He was the son of Issac Scott McClellan and Annie Belle Sudduth. Issac was a share cropper farmer in Grant County who was self educated.
