Descendants of James WILLIAMS, Great Grandfather of Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island
Roger Williams was dedicated to religious freedom and the rights of the Indians to keep control of their land. He was born in London, England about 1603. His parents were James Williams, Jr. and Alice Pemberton Williams. After he finished his education at the University of Cambridge in 1627, he was ordained in the Anglican Church. He and his wife left England and sailed to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, arriving in Boston on the ship, "Lyon" on Feb 5, 1631. The Puritans did not agree with his ideas of separation of Church and State, so he left the Massachusetts Bay Colony and bought land from the Indians. He named it Providence and returned to England to request a charter for the colony. He established the first Baptist Church in America in Rhode Island.
