Green Living

I didn't really know what term to use to "name" this section. This area is my second passion after parenting. And I think it all ties in together in a wonderful way. I thought of naming this Voluntary Simplicity - but it's more than that. And it's more than environmentalism and more than anti-consumerism. I guess this is a way of life - and I'm going to add several offshoot pages from here dealing with being respectful to our planet, caring for our spirits through giving of ourselves, being responsible with our spending - being aware of what we're really buying, where it came from and who it might have hurt or helped by it's manufacture. Living in this way feels so right for us - and I think many people who live this way or want to live this way are finding this out as well.

We have reduced our work hours (and therefore our income) in order to be more present in our lives. We spend more time thinking about our actions instead of just going with the flow. We try to make choices that are environmentally sound, that protect the world our children have inherited. We use products that are made safely and without a lot of chemical ingredients. We try to use natural products when at all possible. We buy organic foods when we can, we're growing our own foods and learning how to preserve them. We don't buy or use plastics. All the things we do are intertwined - for instance, the plastics: the manufacture of these products harm the environment and the workers who make them. Using them in our home allows some of the toxic chemicals to invade our living space and possible harm our children. By using natural products that last longer instead of plastics (that are made to be discarded so easily) we are caring for ourselves, our children and the planet. Again, this is just one example of how the choices we make have a trickle down effect into so many aspects of our lives. I think our choices should reflect our values and ideals, our hopes for the future.

So it is here that we will start on our journey - since what I've done is all I can really tell you about, I'll do that. I'll share what we're doing and why and share links to some great informative sites concerning the environment, our society and a better way of life.

So the related pages only accessible from here are the Environmental Issues page, the Simple Living page (for tips on living frugally and simply) and the Natural Living page (devoted to changing our lifestyles and living in a more natural way). Like I said, they all tie in together, but we'll dissect them just for clarity.

I'm always on the lookout for ideas and tips - so please e-mail me if you have any ideas you'd like to submit to our site. We hope to make this a simple living resource for sharing of ideas!

Simply Sites

The Center for the New American Dream at http://www.newdream.org (won't come up as a link for some reason)This is a wonderful site. I don't know what else to say. Any subject you're interested in as far as creating the new American Dream (i.e., living more simply, rejecting consumerism, living more responsibly) can be found here. Their motto (which I love!) is "More Fun, Less Stuff". I think that sums it up.

Unconventional IdeasThis site contains some excellent personal essays from someone who's living the simple life. I have this one permanently bookmarked. It's great!
