CROATIANS PIONEERS IN MARYBOROUGH VICTORIA - from the 1860'S

CROATIANS PIONEERS IN MARYBOROUGH VICTORIA - from the 1860'S

Located 160 kms north west of Melbourne it lies right at the heart of the Goldrush Centre of Victoria.

Grand buildings, historic cottages and gracious homes are complemented by beautiful public gardens that give the visitor an insight into the rich history of the region.

One of Maryborough's attractions is its close proximity to many other Goldrush Centre towns and features. Within a 20 km radius are the historic townships of Dunolly, Talbot, Carisbrook, Majorca and Timor.... all with their own colourful tales to tell.

Now a city of 8,500, it was occupied in the 1840's by graziers until 1854 when a Gold Rush brought large number of miners to nearby White Hills, 5km north. By 1856 High St., was a thriving thoroughfare serving some 50,000 diggers.

By 1918 mining petered out and secondary industry took over, making it one of the most highly industrialised towns in Australia.

At the hight of the goldrush in Maryborough, many Croatians were there as goldminers, labourers, publicans, and stonemason. Many of them remained until the Gold Rush was in its final stages in Maryborough, but some did decide to settle in the Maryborough district. Records have proven that most of the Croatians who were in the district at this time were single males who worked the goldfields.

We have compiled a list of some of the Croatians, that were listed as living in this district from the 1860's through to the 1920's.
