IV. Service Unit Business

A. Recruitment Coordinator-Linda May

              1.        School Coordinators:

              2.       We still have many people who are missing  required training particularly SafetyWise. Questionnaires are                          available tonight for those who need to complete this training. Linda also has a listing of who needs what                                  training, so check with her if you are unsure.

              3.     Cadettes wishing to work on the Photography Badge may sign up for a program offered through the high school.

B. Registration-Judy Grimm

                1.     Girls should not be selling cookies unless they are registered.

                2.      For add-on registrations, remember that a dues summary must be attached.

                3.      Updates and deletions were on last month’s agenda.

                4.      Presently we have 87 troops registered.

C.    Financial-Annette Wood

                1.      Interim financial reports were due in January, if you haven’t turned one in previously, please do so tonight with                          a copy of a recent bank statement.

                2.      Event Coordinators: Please make sure you read the notes under finances in your event book especially about                          how to handle receipts. If you need money, please call Annette and she will help you make arrangements.

D.    Records-Annette Wood and Karen Brantley

                1.      Training Records-Karen and Annette have spent a lot of time inputting training records for 1998 and 1999                           trainings. They don’t have anything prior to 1998 so leaders are strongly encouraged to complete the training                          sheet that Annette developed. If you have your form completed, please turn in to either Annette or Karen.                          Forms can be faxed to Karen or to Annette. In addition, new leaders should keep their blue training records                          up-to-date. Please be specific with the month and year training was taken.

                2.      Girl Scout Sunday is March 12

                                  Annette Wood will coordinate for Stonybrook. Call her as soon as possible if you have girls that would                                          like to participate.

                                Check with your church’s youth minister to see what Girl Scouts can do at your church.

                3.      Dr. Brian Jones, the Associate Pastor at Stonybrook United Methodist Church will again offer the 3 week                          religious recognition program on the following Sundays: March 12, 19 and 26. The sessions will run from 3:30                          to 4:30 in the sanctuary. Dr. Jones will assist the girls in exploring the opportunity to grow in faith and service to                          God and to others. Most of the booklet work is done on the girl’s own time. The program booklet costs $3.00                          and the recognition items range from $1.50 to $7.50. Since Dr. Jones does not charge for the program, a                          donation for a gift for him is appreciated but not required. Call Karen to register any girls that would like to                          participate by March 9.

                4.      Outstanding Leader Nomination forms have been stuffed in many mailboxes. More forms will be available                          shortly. Feel free to give them to your cookie mom for distribution if you don’t feel comfortable giving them out                          yourself.

5.  "Music to My Ears" is the theme for day camp. Registration materials will be available soon and       parents will be receiving a letter asking for their help. In addition, start saving liquid fabric              softener lids, milk jug lids and juice can lids. They can be brought to any service unit meeting.

                6.      CPR Class is being offered on March 12. Contact Jerri Heine for more details.

E. Fundraising/Tripping Requests-Annette Wood & Karen Brantley

        Please mail all tripping requests and fundraising forms to them.

F. Communications-Sharla House

            1.      Agendas--If you can not make a service unit meeting, call Judy Grimm and she will put information out in the box                      on her front porch.

            2.      Cookie Sale

                            We sold 86,472 boxes of cookies and 5 individual troops sold over 2000 boxes. Great Job!

                            Judy Grimm will be handling the cookie cupboard which will be stocked by the time troops receive their                               individual orders. Cal to order your cookies and additional instructions will be on the answering machine.

                            Dee Snyder has arranged booth sale locations. We will be having booths at 3 Krogers locations (including                               the new New Albany store), Big Bear, K-Mart, Blockbuster and Gahanna Video. Troops may sign up for                               one booth before the meeting and additional booths after the meeting. The booths will take place the                              weekend of March 24 and the next two weekends. Remember to order cookies for booth sales at least one                              week before the sale.

                            Thanks to several for volunteering to handle cookie incentives.

            3.     Event Calendar

                                    Will be earning Swimming Badge and some of Water Fun

                                    Registration information has been mailed and is due back to C. Heine by March 5.

                                    Brownie Fun Night for 1st and 2nd Graders - Kari Hawk and Cathie Kirchenberg

                                    Date: March 25, 2000 from 3:00-7:00 p.m.

                                    Registration is due tomorrow. Older girls are needed to help with the event, please contact Cathy or                                          Keri for information.

                            Brownie Overnight for 3rd Graders - Troop 223 (Vicki Wilker)

                                    A troop has recently taken over the organization of this event, please give them a chance to get it                                      organized. At this point, it will probably center around the Junior Sports badge with a cost between $11                                      and $15.

                            Cadette Bridging - Troop 951, Jerri Heine

                                    Date: Friday, May 19

                                    Earning the Folk Art Interest Patch.

                            Camporee 2000 - Mary Maycinski and others

                                    Date: November 3-5, 2000

                            Leader/Daughter Event - This will be a potluck in April.

                                    More details will be available at the next SU meeting

                                    Council is offering several ReAct programs. Hand outs are in the school organizer’s folders.

                4.      Teen Council

                        If you brought Teen Council surveys tonight, please turn them in to Tina Edwards or Linda Jay.

                        Girls who did Program Aide Core training last Saturday should be advised that incorrect information was given.                          Girls going toward silver must complete either the Dreams to Reality Patch or 5 career activities.

                5.      Service Unit Newsletter is being put together by Troop 394. They are looking for information on all troop’s                          activities. Information can be submitted several ways.

                6.      Friendship Park Clean-up: Organizers-We still have some months open on the schedule, please sign up for a                          month.

                7.      News from Council

                        a. See the January newsletter for information about the Ohio Elks Association, Colgate Youth of America                              Program, and the International Leadership Network.

                        b. Metro and Suburban cookie cupboards should have their cookies on Thursday, March 16.

                        c. Wider Opportunity to Peal 2000, a large primitive encampment in England from July 29-August 5, 2000.                              There is a possibility of an additional couple of days on either side of this time frame. The event will be                              partially supported financially by the Juliette Lowe World Friendship Fund. The council will be responsible                              for selecting the patrol to attend. The patrol will consist of two adult chaperones from Seal of Ohio., 5 girls                              from Seal of Ohio between the ages of 14 and 15 and five from other councils. Contact Sue Shilling for an                              application and more information.

                        d. Tour 2001-Pax Lodge/Chalet-Adult Trip in June of 2001

                               This is an adult opportunity to visit two world centers, research and an opportunity for troop leaders TO                                  HAVE FUN! The trip is being independently organized by a group of Girl Scout volunters. The ten day                                  trip profile includes: round trip airfare from Columbus, tourist class hotels with twin accommodations,                                  transfers as specified on itinerary, continental breakfast daily, dinner daily, Eurostar "Chunnel" crossing,                                  overnight train and couchette to Zurich, guided walking or bus sightseeing tours in London, Windsor, Paris                                  and Versailles, prepaid entrance to St. Paul’s Cathedral, Windsor, Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Versailles, and                                  Lake Thun Boat, 3 day travel card for London underground and 2 days of personal free time. The fee will                                  be $2500 based on 25 participants and provided the airport fees don’t change. An application and                                  deposit must be turned in prior to August 15. For more information, contact PAXCHALET@aol.com.

                        e. QSP Step Two Mailings were mailed without the catalog insert due to a QSP factory system breakdown. If                              potential customers contact you with this situation, please advise them, they can telephone the Customer                              Service number at 1-800-678-2673. They will be happy to mail a flyer/catalog listing of magazines from                              which to order.

                        f. New! Girl Scouts Go Global is a full color picture book for Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts. An excellent                              introduction to the worldwide Girl Scout movement, it helps girls learn how to think globally. The book’s                              activities also reflect most of the six themes of WAGGS’ Building World Citizenship initiative. A natural for                              Thinking Day, it is just as suitable for use year-round whenever troop activities need a lift. Available in the                              Girl Scout Shop for $2 with a colorful patch that can be earned by completing the book’s activities.

                        g. The World at Your Doorstep is our council’s newest patch program also dealing with global awareness. The                              program is designed for Brownie through Senior Girl Scouts. Activities have you explore, experience and                              embark on an adventure to appreciate the wide variety of cultures, languages and people waiting just outside                              your door! When you complete the required activities, you can purchase a holographic button that shows a                              3-dimensional earth with the words, "The World at Your Doorstep" "Girl Scouts". The program booklet and                              buttons are also available at the Girl Scout shop.

                        h. Write a Letter to the Editor of Your Local Paper at the 2000 Cookie Sale. Share your feelings about Girl                               Scouts, your troop accomplishments, your cookie selling goals and what your troop is planning to do with                              the money earned from this year’s sale. Adults and girls are encouraged to voice opinions about being a part                              of this annual event. Pick one volunteer to write a letter on behalf on your service unit! Sharla has sample                              letters and main ideas to include in the letters. Kim Hartz, Public Relations Manager can be contacted for                              additional details.

                        i. Shop News: Thinking Day 2000 patches are now in at a cost of $1.25 each. There are a number of items in                              the bargain corner including adult culottes at 50% off, sweatshirts at 30% off and tag-along t-shirts and                              discontinued patches at 15% off. Several new camping items have been added to the regular store inventory                              and the new sage leader logo and plain logo sweatshirts are in stock. They also have red, black and ash logo                              t-shirts.

                        j. The Gem Show will be at Veterans Memorial on April 1 and 2. It is a great opportunity for Girl Scouts of all                              ages to see some fine specimens, have rock specimens identified by an expert, learn from educational exhibits                              just for kids, and just have a good time. Girls wearing their Girl Scout pin or some piece of their Girl Scout                              uniform get in free! A flyer is in school organizer folders.

                        k. Celebrating Young Women: Building Strong Futures is the theme for a one-day symposium by Columbus                              Children’s Hospital and The Prevention Institute on adolescent female health issues. The particular focus will                              be on linking research, policy and practice in affecting social and health behaviour change. Youth participants                              (girls in 9-12th grades) as well as adults are encouraged to attend. The symposium is on Friday, March 31,                              2000 at the Children’s Hospital Education Center and will run from 7:30-4:00. There is a $50 registration fee                              for adults and a $15 registration fee for high school students. The fee includes a continental breakfast and a                              full lunch. Call Mary Ann Binder at the Girl Scout office to request a brochure and registration form.

                        l. Flyers about other activities are also in the school folders so please check them out before you leave.

                       m. Ohio State Fair Aides are needed. Contact Sharla for more information or an application. Also, many                              categories for the fair have changed. Please see Sharla before determining any projects that you hope to                              enter.

            G.     Publicity-Jerri Heine

                    1. If your troop is doing anything that would make an interesting article in the paper, please see that Jerri gets the                          information. A box is by her front door.
