John L Gossett's discharge paper from service during the Civil War are shown at left. It reads as follows:

To all whom it may concern:

Know ye, That John L. Gossett a Private of Lieut R.C. Biggadike's Company, (H,) 27th Regiment of Ohio Veteran Volunteers who was enrolled on the Twenty fifth day of December one thousand eight hundred and sixty three to serve three years or during the war, is hereby Discharged from the service of the Untied States this first day of June, 1865, at Grant US General Hospital by reason of Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. No objection to his being re-enlisted is known to exist.*

Said John L. Gossett was born in Sardinia in the State of Ohio, is nineteen years of age, Five feet Seven inches high, Dark complexion, Blue eyes, Dark hair, and by occupation, when enrolled, a farmer.

Given at Willet's Point NYork this first day of June 1865.
