13 images with captions

Henry Casper Gailliot married Franceska Dumoulin on 12 Jun 1893 in St Augustine Roman Catholic Church in Lawrenceville (a borough of Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania. Within a year, they moved to Braddock borough on the southeast side of Pittsburgh. Figures G-1, G-2, G-3, and G-4 depict the first generation.

Gailliots in Braddock, ca 1910 Fig. G-1. Gailliot Family in Braddock Borough, near Pittsburgh, PA. Back row, left: Franceska, nee. Dumoulin (mother), Henry (father) holding Clemens, Charles, and Mary Frances; Front row: Joseph, Albert, and Henry John. About 1910. For more information on the descendants of Henry C. Gailliot and Franceska Dumoulin go to the Modified Register Report (Descendant Chart) for Anthony Gailliot.

Charles A. Gailliot, First Communion Fig. G-2. The oldest child of Henry and Francesca Gailliot was Charles Anthony Gailliot, who became my maternal grandfather. Here, he receives First Communion presumably at St Joseph Catholic Church in Braddock, PA. The family lost the original record. The Catholic archdiocese of Pittsburgh holds records from the public for 100 years, but recently lowered that period to 70 years, if proof of the subject's death can be verified. Now, armed with Charles death certificate, I hope to obtain the precise date of my grandfather's First Communion. I estimate photo was taken in about 1901 when Charles was about 7 years old.

Charles Gailliot weds Margaret Austel, 1917 Fig G-5. My maternal grand parents, Charles Gailliot and Margaret Austel. They were married 6 August 1917 at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Braddock Borough, PA. In the next month, Charles received his draft notice for service in WW I; however, his application had just been accepted for a civilian job as a pattern maker at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC.  Since Charles' job was considered part of the war effort, he was not drafted into the military.

building farmhouse Fig. G-6. Within a couple of years after Charles Gailliot and his wife settled in Washington, DC area, Charles located a farm for sale in Alexandria, VA. Then, about 1920, Charles' parents and siblings moved from Braddock to the farm in Alexandria. Here, Henry and Francesca Gailliot and their sons, Joseph and Charles stand on the foundation of a barn under construction. About early 1920's. Man on far right is unidentified.
Farm house in Alexandria Fig. G-7. The farm played a central role in the Gailliot family. Chickens were the main livestock and were sold from a butcher shop in old town Alexandria during WW II. Later, the farm became a gravel pit- The Hill Top Sand and Gravel Co. Then after the gravel was mined out, it became a landfill. Finally, at the millineium, it is being transformed into a golf course. Photo by Robert Kramp, 1992.
