CENSUS 1947

The following schedules give you an indication of some family names on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee. The first is based on the Dutch census, held in 1947, and the second is based on the annual Dutch telephone directory in 1997, exactly 50 years after the census.

The Netherlands now have about 15 million inhabitants, compared to 2.6 million in 1830. At that time part of the newly established Kingdom of The Netherlands (1815, see Short history) became an independent new Kingdom of Belgium.

We are one of the highest populated countries in the world with almost 450 inhabitants per square km (1km = 0.62 mile). The main increase, 5 million, took place between 1945-1980, viz. 5 million persons. Over 47% of our population is living in the four western provinces; Noord- and Zuid-Holland, Utrecht and Zeeland.

On May 31, 1947 the province of Zuid-Holland, excluding the two big cities The Hague and Rotterdam, had 1,104,834 inhabitants in 171 villages. Three percent of them lived on Goeree-Overflakkee, as per following schedule.

Some of the family names are concentrated in only one village in this province. In order not to repeat some of the information on the following schedule, we have highlighted the names involved and the village where at least 50% of the persons having that name in the province of Zuid-Holland, were living.

Please note that we did not specify all the villages of Goeree-Overflakkee. Consequently there is difference between the total number of a listed name (column 3) compared with the total of names per village.

As you will notice the family name AKERSHOEK occurs, except for two listings, in Ouddorp, and TANIS and GRINWIS are the most popular, not only in Ouddorp but also on the whole island.

Others = represent the villages of Achthuizen, Den Bommel, Herkingen and Stad aan het Haringvliet.
