Lucas Padgett of Walterboro dies

    Lucas Padgett of Walterboro died Monday, September 18, 2000 at his home. He was 83.
     Padgett was the brother of Betty Padgett Black, and the uncle of Nancy Skardon.
     He was born in Walterboro in 1917, and was a close friend of Ben, Stephen and Jimmy Skardon. He graduated from Walterboro High School, and in 1938 graduated from The Citadel.
     During World War Two he served in the U.S. Army as an infantry commanding officer in the Pacific Theatre.
     He retired from Santee Cooper in 1983 as Vice President of Industrial Development. He was awarded South Carolina's Order of the Palmetto by Governor John C. West in 1971.
     He was the widower of Martha Jo Jones Padgett; and is survived by his sister; one son, Lucas C. Padgett Jr. of Charleston; daughter Nancy Jo Padgett-Middleton of San Francisco; and four grandchildren.
