A PIONEER OF GROVER - Henry Thompson
In the year 1875, when the discovery of gold in the Black Hills became definitely known, Henry Thompson and a partner named Street, established a general store at Custer, Dakota Territory. Street stayed at the store and Thompson freighted. In those days everything was freighted from Cheyenne and other centers to the Black Hills by mule or ox team.
During the height of the Black Hills gold excitement, it naturally attracted the prospectors and adventurers, and they would accept any kind of transportation. Thompson accommodated some of them on his heavily laden freight wagons bound for Custer.
All of Thompsons freighting trips except one were made over the Red Canyon trail and the other was made over the Cheyenne-Deadwood trail via Robbers Roost. This wagon was the first to discover the Metz massacre, the discovery being made by their advance scout Marty.
Thompson was full German, having come from Kiel, Germany at the age of 18, and made a success of many things that he tried his hand at. Thompson married a girl who had also come over from Germany. She had come to Cheyenne to be with her aunt who was running a rooming house at the time. He met Miss Ida Stark at this rooming house where he stayed when in Cheyenne. They were married on November 25, 1881 at the home of Ida's aunt and uncle, Mr. & Mrs. Clyde Hanson in Cheyenne.
Thompson freighted 3 more years after his marriage, then he took up a homestead in 1885 on Crow Creek, 10 miles south of Grover. He took his wife and two little children, horses and wagons and all their belongings and went on the homestead, setting up housekeeping in a homestead shack hurriedly built for their few belongings.
Henry left this homestead in 1904, leaving son John to run the place. Henry then bought 160 acres near Ault, as well as a butcher shop in Ault. Peter and Walter finished their schooling in Ault.
Henry left Ault in 1914 and bought the Oasis Ranch 10 miles west of Grover. He built a two-story house that was still standing in 1968.
Henry then moved to Grover in 1916 and bought the former Odd Fellows building. He rented out the upper floor and ran a hay and feed store in the lower part.
Henry bought a share in the Grover Elevator and a grocery department store. He also was one of the founders of the Farmers Bank of Ault and one of its Directors until his death. He was Mayor of Grover from 1920 to 1924. He then became ill and passed away on April 12, 1925 at the age of 74.
