My Favorite Poems

Red Roses

Red roses were her favorites, her name was also Rose.
And every year her husband sent them, tied with pretty bows.
The year he died, the roses were delivered to her door.
The card said, "Be my Valentine," like all the years before.
Each year he sent her roses, and the note would always say,
"I love you even more this year, than last year on this day."
"My love for you will always grow, with every passing year."
She knew this was the last time that the roses would appear.
She thought, he ordered roses in advance before this day.
Her loving husband did not know, that he would pass away.
He always liked to do things early, way before the time.
Then, if he got too busy, everything would work out fine.
She trimmed the stems, and placed them in a very special vase.
Then, sat the vase beside the portrait of his smiling face.
She would sit for hours, in her husband's favorite chair.
While staring at his picture, and the roses sitting there.
A year went by, and it was hard to live without her mate.
With loneliness and solitude, that had become her fate.
Then, the very hour, as on Valentines before,
The doorbell rang, and there were roses, sitting by her door.
She brought the roses in, and then just looked at them in shock.
Then, went to get the telephone, to call the florist shop.
The owner answered, and she asked him, if he would explain,
Why would someone do this to her, causing her such pain?
"I know your husband passed away, more than a year ago,"
The owner said, "I knew you'd call, and you would want to know."
"The flowers you received today, were paid for in advance."
"Your husband always planned ahead, he left nothing to chance."
"There is a standing order, that I have on file down here,
And he has paid, well in advance, you'll get them every year.
There also is another thing, that I think you should know,
He wrote a special little card...he did this years ago."
"Then, should ever, I find out that he's no longer here,
That's the card...that should be sent, to you the following year."
She thanked him and hung up the phone, her tears now flowing hard.
Her fingers shaking, as she slowly reached to get the card.
Inside the card, she saw that he had written her a note.
Then, as she stared in total silence, this is what he wrote...
"Hello my love, I know it's been a year since I've been gone,
I hope it hasn't been too hard for you to overcome."
"I know it must be lonely, and the pain is very real.
For if it was the other way, I know how I would feel.
The love we shared made everything so beautiful in life.
I loved you more than words can say, you were the perfect wife."
"You were my friend and lover, you fulfilled my every need.
I know it's only been a year, but please try not to grieve.
I want you to be happy, even when you shed your tears.
That is why the roses will be sent to you for years."
"When you get these roses, think of all the happiness,
That we had together, and how both of us were blessed.
I have always loved you and I know I always will.
But, my love, you must go on, you have some living still."
"Please...try to find happiness, while living out your days.
I know it is not easy, but I hope you find some ways.
The roses will come every year, and they will only stop,
When your door's not answered, when the florist stops to knock."
"He will come five times that day, in case you have gone out.
But after his last visit, he will know without a doubt,
To take the roses to the place, where I've instructed him,
And place the roses where we are, together once again."

Putting Things Into Perspective

Around the corner I have a friend
In this great city that has no end,
Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,
And before I know it, a year is gone
And I never see my old friend's face,
For life is a swift and terrible race,
He knows I like him just as well
As in the days when I rang his bell,
And he rang mine.

We were younger then,
And new we are busy, tired men.
Tired of playing a fools game,
Tired of trying to make a name.

"Tomorrow" I say "I will call on Jim"
"Just to show that I'm thinking of him."
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,
And the distance between us grows and grows.

Around the corner! - yet miles away,
"Here's a telegram sir-"
"Jim died today."

So remember...
If you love someone, tell them.
Remember always to say what you mean.
Never be afraid to express yourself.

Take the opportunity to tell someone
what they mean to you.
Seize the day and have no regrets.
Most importantly, stay close to your
friends and family, for they have helped
make you the person you are today
and are what it's all about anyway.

Pass this along to your friends.
Let it make a difference in your day and theirs.
The difference between expressing love and having regrets
is that the regrets may stay around forever.

Personal note: It's real easy to forget what's important in life, so don't.

"I SEE JESUS" THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD

I saw Jesus last week.
He was wearing blue jeans and an old shirt.
He was up at the church building;
He was alone and working hard. For just a minute he looked a little like one of our members.
But it was Jesus--I could tell by his smile.

I saw Jesus last Sunday.
He was teaching a Bible class.
He didn't talk real loud or use long words,
But you could tell he believed what he said.
For just a minute, he looked like my Bible teacher.
But it was Jesus--I could tell by his loving voice.

I saw Jesus yesterday.
He was at the hospital visiting a friend who was sick.
They prayed together quietly.
For just a minute he looked like Brother Jones.
But it was Jesus--I could tell by the tears in his eyes.

I saw Jesus this morning.
He was in my kitchen making my breakfast
and fixing me a special lunch.
For just a minute he looked like my mom.
But it was Jesus--I could feel the love from his heart.

I see Jesus everywhere,
Taking food to the sick,
Welcoming others to his home,
Being friendly to a newcomer, and for just a minute
I think he's someone I know.
But it's always Jesus--I can tell by the way he serves.

Think of me
When others have gone,
When times get tough--
And you're all alone.

Think of me
When skies turn gray,
When friends turn away.

Think of me
As day slips to night,
Try to believe things
Will turn out alright.

Think of me
When the wind blows cold,
Makes you lonely--
Lets fear unfold,
Think of me
And remember when
The days were warm--
And loving then.

Think of me
As time flies by,
When things don't work out--
And you want to cry.

Think of me
When things go right,
As things look up
I trust that you might...

Think of me
Ther's no need to prove--
Just let your thoughts of me
Be filled with love.

A Poem of God's Grace

I did not know His love before,
the way I know it now.
I could not see my need for Him,
my pride would not allow.
I had it all, without a care,
the "Self-sufficient" lie.
My path was smooth, my sea was still,
not a cloud was in my sky.

I thought I knew His love for me,
I thought I'd seen His grace,
I thought I did not need to grow,
I thought I'd found my place.
But then the way grew rough and dark,
the storm clouds quickly rolled;
The waves began to rock my ship,
I found I had no hold.

The ship that I had built myself
was made of foolish pride.
It fell apart and left me bare,
with nowhere else to hide
I had no strength or faith to face
the trials that lay ahead,
And so I simply spoke His name
and bowed my weary head.

His loving arms enveloped me,
and then He helped me stand.
He said, "You still must face this storm,
but I will hold your hand."
So through the dark and lonely night
He guided me through pain.
I could not see the light of day
or when I'd smile again.

Yet through the pain and endless tears,
my faith began to grow.
I could not see it at the time,
but my light began to glow.
I saw God's love in brand new light,
His grace and mercy, too.
For only when all self was gone could
Jesus' love shine through.

It was not easy in the storm,
I sometimes wondered why.
At times I thought, "I can't go on."
I'd hurt, and doubt, and cry.
But Jesus never left my side
He guided me each day.
Through pain and strife,
through fire and flood,
He helped me all the way.

And now I see as ne'er before
how great His love can be
How in my weakness He is strong,
how Jesus cares for me!
He worked it all out for my good,
although the way was rough.
He only sent what I could bear,
and then He said, "Enough!"

He raised His hand and said, "Be still!"
He made the storm clouds cease.
He opened up the gates of joy
and flooded me with peace.
I saw His face now clearer still,
I felt His presence strong,
I found anew His faithfulness,
He never did me wrong.

but only for my good,
For pain and tears have helped me grow
as nothing ever could.
I still have so much more to learn
as Jesus works in me;
If in the storm I'll love Him more,
that's where I want to be!

Friendship

Friendship is a priceless gift
That cannot be bought or sold.
But it's value is far greater than
A mountain made of gold.

For gold is cold and lifeless;
It can neither see nor hear.
And in a time of trouble,
It is powerless to cheer.

It has no ears to listen,
Nor a heart to understand.
It cannot give you comfort,
Or reach out a helping hand.

So when you ask God for a gift,
Be thankful if He sends.
Not diamond, pearls or riches,
But the love of a true good friend!

A friend is like an angel who holds onto you after others have let go. A real friend is like an angel who warms you by their presence and remembers you in their prayers. To be like an angel, find the good in each day then give it to others. A faithful friend is like an angel who strengthens you with prayers, blesses you with love and encourages you with hope. A true friend nows who you are, understands where you/ve been and accepts who you/ve become. The light of friendship is like the light from a single candle, seen when all around is dark. Ture friendship is a knot that angels hands have tied. We cannot all play the same instrument, but we can all be in the same key. An angel is someone you feel you've known forwever even though you just met. An angel is someone who brings out the angel in you.
I'll Be There
If ever there's a moment
When you need a friend to listen,
If ever someone can each out
To dry the tears that glisten, I'll Be There.
If ever you have special needs
And hope someone will see them,
If ever you have secrets
And would like a friend to free them, I'll Be There.
If you just need encouragment
To help you on your way,
If you just need a cheeful voice
To pull you though the day, I'll Be There.
If you need one who cares a lot
And thinks about you often,
If you need one who shares your hopes-
Your worries strives to soften, I'll Be There.
If you would like to be yourself
With someone who respects you,
If you need one who understands
How all life affects you, I'll Be There.

Thoughts To Live By:

Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen.
Every good thought is a prayer.
A good example is the best sermon.
What we pray for may not be for our ultimate good. "No" can be an answer to a prayer as well as "Yes."
Any good that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow-creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.
No matter how hopeless the present problems may seem, remember: This, too, shall pass.
More things are accomplished by prayer then the wold realizes.
A man with God is alway in a majority.
No man's knowledge can go beyond his experience.
Growth is the only evidence of life.
Love is understanding, acceptance, tenderness. If it tries to strangle and possess, it is not love.
The task ahead of us is never as great as the Power within us.
Beware of the rubber conscience and the concrete heart.
The trouble with many of us is that in trying times we stop trying.
