My father, Louis, was the  second oldest born to Mitchell Spongia and Gertrude Loar. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana,  and raised in Plaquemines Parish, in the towns of Port Eads and Boothville.

He had one older, brother Horace, one younger brother, Mitchell
and
two sisters Beverly, and Brenda.

One day  Louis' Aunt Susan, introduced him to my mom Corinne. They dated and soon married. Before they knew it, 4 months later, my dad was drafted into the U.S. Army. Mom followed Dad to the state of Washington and lived there for a while . Then Dad was shipped overseas to Korea. Mom went back home to New Orleans, Louisiana.

While he was stationed in Korea, his first child, a son was born. Over the next 9 years four girls were born.

Dad as a young boy of nine years old was in the swamp of Plaquemines Parish helping his father hunt for alligators (My boys are 13 & 15 and could not imagine them doing that). My father worked in the oil fields on derricks and as a crane operator dugging many of the canals in the swamps (something years later he regretted doing). After work, and especially during the summer months he would  trap nutria, or trawl on his trawl boat.  He was a hard worker, sometimes working 100 hours per week. Due to the long hours of work, resulted in not eating right and not taking care of himself. He had to retire early due to heart problems. He became very bored at home doing nothing. He soon took up gardening vegetables. He also spend time wood carving.  He has done many carving pieces. Fawn, black bear, crab, and dolphin fish are just some of his special cravings.  He first started carving duck decoys. He learned that from his father. He was also skillful at netting trawl nets.
