Opposites

I ask you for passion fruit.
You offer me a pineapple.
I count the spikes, (there are 33),
Run my fingers across its stickiness
Then slice it open.
I lick the wound.
It is unexpectedly sweet
But dry.  White gold chunks
Inside its shell pull apart
In strings of flesh.
We share that spiney fare
And when we finish
I find
I prefer pineapple.

Les, Christmas Play, 1957
Les was born and raised in Liverpool, England, the fifth child in a family of seven.  He has two older brothers (Jack and Len aka Mike), two older sisters (Valerie and Veronica) and two younger brothers (Bob and Phil).

His mother confided to me once that Les was a bit absent-minded as a child.  She would send him to the corner store (about a block or so from home) with a grocery list and money.  He would return a couple of hours later without the groceries, stating he didn't know what he'd done for the past two hours and he'd forgotten about going to the shops.

Les is not absent-minded anymore, which is fortunate, because he is currently employed as a branch bank manager.

Les and I were married on July 22, 1970.  Many had doubts as to the wisdom of such a venture.  We were both very young.  However, the relationship has endured.

In the past year and a half, Les has been taking flying lessons off and on.  Some of his solo flights are captured on video.  His brother Phil has set them up at a web site in England.  To see the clip of

Les graduated from Spring Arbor College, in February 2001 with a bachelor's degree in Management and Organizational Studies (and a 4.0!), completed in just over a year.  He hopes to make some use of the knowledge gained - and hopefully see some benefit from having the degree itself!
