My Story
Hi, I am Kelly Haser-Pickens, Mrs. Jacksonville 2006. Just to tell you a little bit about myself, I was chosen Mrs. Jacksonville in April, 2006. This was not judged solely on beauty, but on family and community involvement, a questionnaire and an essay. I later went on to the Mrs. Florida pageant where I won and now onto the reigning, Mrs. East Coast USA/Globe.

My life though, has not always been so rosy. Believe it or not, I grew up a shy child. What I have become is something I never thought possible. You see, as a child I was sexually abused by a distant relative. I felt ugly and had little self-worth. My parents loved me very much, gave me all I needed, supported me; but never knew this was happening to me. I was always taught to respect authority, so I never told anyone. I was scared and afraid to tell. I didn't know whether I should tell or whether it was my fault or even that it was happening to my sister.

At the age of about 14 I became rebellious and moved to Florida, thinking life would be so much better there with my birth mother, who I barely knew. I continued to struggle, moved back home at 15 and at 16 years of age, moved back to Florida for the last time, to live with my boyfriend. I have basically been on my own since then, with the occasional "drop-ins" from my birth mom. My life was spiraling out of control. When I was 17 I became pregnant and had my first child at the age of 18. At 19, I became pregnant again and by the time I was 20 years old I had a "full fledge family," while still a child myself.

I want all of you out there who are struggling like I did to listen to what I have to say. I have been where a lot of you are going. There is no "magic" pill that will instantly cure everything that is going on in your life. The most important thing to remember is that I am NOT still at that same point in my life and YOU DON'T Have to be either!

I have prayed, persevered and moved on to accomplish my goals, dreams and a future! I WOULD NOT BE WHERE I AM TODAY, HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR MY LORD AND SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST. He rescued me out of the mess that was my life . No, he didn't "break in" and get me. I had to be willing to "give" him my life and that is what I did.

Thank you for listening to my story. Please feel free to tell me yours and remember, "You CAN do all things through Christ who strengthens you."

God Bless you,

Kelly Haser-Pickens

P.S. Oh, and by the way, that "boyfriend" is now my husband! We have been together for 21 years and he also has given his life to the Lord and serves Him wholeheartedly.

We have also "added" on to our family! We now have two more beautiful daughters ages 3 and 5! Our other children are now 19 and 17! "The joys of motherhood"!
