The John and Adelina Schilling Family

John Schilling was born Sep 15, 1856 and emmigrated to the US in July of 1881 from West Prussia, Germany, an area which is now Poland. His fiance, Adelina Buschkowsa, born Apr 10, 1858, emmigrated June 14, 1887. They both entered the US at Baltimore, Maryland. In America, Adelina was known as Adelina Busch. John and Adelina were married June 14, 1887.

This homestead was built by John and Lena Schilling between 1891 and 1918. The barn and house were lost on October 12 in the Minnesota Forest Fires of 1918 that took John's life. He was caught in the forest and burned fighting the fire near his woodpile. On that fateful day, Emma was married and living in Duluth, thus escaping the fire; Adelina and Albert had carried produce for sale into Duluth and were unaware of the tragedy taking place at home; Carl and Fred were away- serving their country; Martha and Bill saved themselves by taking refuge on a large rock pile and covering themselves with wet blankets. The Red Cross helped to build the medium side building seen here for the family to live in while the house and barn were rebuilt. Adelina passed away in Emma's home on Dec 15, 1950.

Martha Schilling was born on the Schilling homestead in Solway Township near Duluth, MN on Mar 17, 1888. She married Emil (Barnowski) Klein (1886-1958). The couple had five children- Walter, Ernest, Esther, Arnold and Harold. Martha passed away on the 4th of June, 1961.

Carl Schilling was one of twins born to John and Adelina on June 12, 1890. He married Ethel Hilda Wilson Schlief Gorder (1900-1967). Carl and Ethel had four children- Arnold, Betsy, Dallas and Robert. Carl passed away July 26, 1969.

Carl's twin brother, Edward, was married to Mary Ylen on Nov 8, 1926. They shared two sons- Ted and Ernest. Edward passed away at their homestead on Rose Road near Duluth, Mn on Dec 1, 1979.

Edward and Mary celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 1976.

Emma Adeline Schilling was born Dec 27, 1892. She married Emil Ziemer (1885-1965) and raised six children- Lydia, Herman, George, Ruth, Arlene, and Carol. She passed away Aug 25, 1987.

Fred Schilling, born Sept. 16, 1894, was married to Gerta Erickson (1901-?). They had two sons, John and William. Fred died on the 28th of Nov, 1942.

NOT PICTURED: Albert Schilling (1900-1943) married Camilla Paulson (1897-1975). Their son is named Donald. Fred (above) passed away in 1942.
