Descendants of Compiled by Joan K. Achille The first proof of Finley being in Virginia was in the Orange County, Virginia titheables and on 28 March 1748 he had 360 acres of land on a fork of the Rappahannock River, Orange County. This land became part of Culpeper County, Virginia when Culpeper was formed. Up unto 1754 Finley is mentioned in land records of Culpeper County. His will of which I have a photocopy of, is in 1771 in Culpeper County. The various parcels of land that he owned was in Madison County, Virginia after it was formed in 1792. Finley’s wife Elizabeth was listed as Elizabeth McAlister in his will and a maiden name not given. I think, however that her maiden name was Rush. In the King George County, Virginia will book A-1:
To son Benjamin Rush and his daughters, Elizabeth, Jane and Alice and granddaughter Catherine Rush. To kinswoman of William Rush, Jane Brown To Benjamin Rush, son of William Rush To Elizabeth McAlister, wife of Finla McAllester also: Will of James Rush, Madison County, Virginia, June 1788-December 1788 To niece Ann McAllister, land on which William Rush now lives Ann McAllister, Administrix. Elizabeth Duff was the widow of Rush, perhaps Benjamin Rush and had a daughter Elizabeth. Also (from the IGA) there was a Benjamin Rush of King George County, Virginia (which adjoins Stafford County, which adjoins Culpeper County) had a daughter Elizabeth born 13 September 1723. Finley and Elizabeth were married by 1746, the date mentioned in the will of Elizabeth Duff. It is not known where they were married, but perhaps a marriage record will be found in one of the counties mentioned above.
Finley McAlester, of Brumfield Parish, Culpeper Coutn, Virginia, dated 28 September 1766. Inventory of estate dated 15 April 1771. The will was proved 21 January 1771. Those mentioned in Will: Wife, Elizabeth McAlester Sons, John, James, Robert, William Daughters, Elizabeth, Catherine, Mary, Ann, Sarah While we do not have actual proof of this as yet, we think the family of Finley and Elizabeth looked like this: Finley McAlister b. Ca 1720 probably in Virginia m. prior to 1746 to Elizabeth Rush d. prior to 21 January 1771 in Culpeper, Virginia. Their children were:
.....Conveyed to Allen McCallester, one hundred and four and a half acres of land from the heirs of John McCallester, deceased, agreeable to a bond dated the 23 April 1806. Franklin County, KY census, John was listed in 1800 and Jemima in 1810 Madison County, VA deeds mention John and wife Jemima, and state that John is the son of Finley McAlister. Descendants of John and Jemima mostly resided on Salt River and Gilberts Creek area of Franklin, Washington and Anderson counties of Kentucky. 2. James McAlister b. 1740's-1750's probably Culpeper County, VA and married Eve/Eva (maiden name not known) ca 1770's - died 1798, he may have been the James McAlister who was killed by lightning. Madison County, Virginia will Book 1, 1798 There was a bond for Eve McCallaster, James Shotwell, and Joel McCallester (a son of James and Eva) for administration. Eve was listed as Administrix 22 August 1799. Madison County, VA deeds mention James and wife Eva, James being the son of Finley McAlister. 3. Robert McAlister b. Ca late 1740's-1750's probably Culpeper County, VA - married Jean/Jenny (maiden name unknown) ca 1770's - died unknown if it was in Virginia, Kentucky or possiblby Maryland, Baltimore County. It is known that Robert had a daughter named Betsey (Elizabeth?) Because his sister Ann gave her a deed of gift:
26 April 1798..I Ann McAllister, ...natural love to niece Betsy McAllister, daughter of Robert McAllister, for one dollar..give two featherbeds, all my shoemakers tools & etc., 4 November 1797. Franklin County, KY Deed Book D: Indenture, 18 September 1798 James McAllister of Franklin County, KY, heir at law to Robert McAllister (formerly of Baltimore county, Maryland but now deceased) ...there are four indentures wherein James deeds land for love and affection and 5 shillings, land to his sisters Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth and Martha that apparently had belonged to Robert McAllister and was located on the Salt River in Franklin and Washington counties, Kentucky. Of these daughters of this Robert, Sarah married Martin Everhart in Baltimore County, Maryland and they moved to Kentucky; Hannah married John Phillips, and Martha married John Linville. This Robert of Baltimore County, MD and Robert the son of Finley, who married Jean/Jenny are likely the same but we have yet found proof. 4 & 5. Elizabeth and Catherine McAlister. These two daughters married brothers: Elizabeth m. Charles Henson and Catherine m. James Henson. These Hensons were likly sons of Joseph and Ann Henson and were born in Stafford County, VA., which adjoins the southeast border of Culpeper County, Va. Elizabeth and Catherine and husbands and families moved to North Carolina and resided in Chatham County. 6. Ann McAlister...never married. She was administrix to her mothers will. She probably died in Madison county, VA. 7 & 8. Sarah and Mary McAlister...nothing is known at this time of these two daughters and if they were married or to whom. They were probably born in the 1750' and were mentioned in Finley’s will. They were not listed as wife of anyone in the will as were Elizabeth and Catherine, so I assume they were unmarried in 1771. 9. William McAlister...he inherited the plantation “whereon I now live and one hundred and sixty acres of land thereunto, belonging, after may wife’s decease to him and his heirs forever.” As Finley left him the land on which he and Elizabeth lived, he might have been the oldest son. We have not found further mention of William, so far in deeds or other records of Culpeper and Madison Counties, VA. He may have moved away or just stayed put and did not enter into any land transactions. He was not mentioned in the estate administration of his mother. It is not known if he had married and if so had any children. McAlister.....after finding so many spellings of the surname I decided to use McAlister. In one record I found 3 different spellings. So far I have found in connection with my McAlisters the following spelling:
McAlaster McAllaster McAllester McAllister McAllistar Mcarster McOlister McCallastar McCallester McCallister McCollister McCullister Macalister Mackalester. The McAlisters in the Madison and Culpeper counties area are probably connected. They are: Allen b. Ca 1765-68 VA. He is in the Mercer,Franklin, Anderson counties area of KY and was in Washington county, Indiana in 1815 where he had a tavern. He may have been the Allen who married Rachel Gill (widow of a Gill and mother of Elvirey Gill who married James Barnes in Mercer county, KY) in 1821 in Woodford County, KY. He could very well have been the son of John and Jemima. Patrick There was a Patrick who married Nancy Smith 11 January 1822 Madison Co., VA and a Patrick who married Frances Stonesiffer on 1 July 1829, also in Madison Co., VA. These two Patricks may be the same man who married twice or maybe two different people. Could they or one of them be a son of William or Robert. Patrick went to Tennessee. Ezekiel He married Polly/Dolly Shotwell 14 October 1797, dau. of William Shotwell. Could Ezekiel be a son of William or Robert. This Ezekiel apparently moved to Ohio about 1806. There is a Deborah Andrew researching Ezekiel but I have been unable to contact her. Randolph In the Madison County, VA Will book 1, page 176: One brindle cow to my loving friend Elijah Bukham, Sr., remainer of my goods, chattels, bills, bonds...to my beloved wife Margaret McAlister 17 August 1800. Elijah Bukham also listed as Elijah Beckham Daniel Madison County, VA Deed Book 3, page 63: Indenture 21 May1801 between Daniel McAlister, Benjamin Sisk and Elizabeth his wife (Benjamin married Elizabeth McAlister 7 September 1786 in Culpeper, VA) of one part and Ezekiel Terry...for L60, sell 160 acres...Were Daniel and Elizabeth brother and sister? Whose children were they? James McAlister and Nancy McAlister Madison County, VA Deed book 2, page 484: Indenture 11 April 1800, between Leonard Cristler and John Weatherall..for L10..sell 80 acres beginning Col. Henry Hill, James McAlister and Nancy McAlister, another tract granted to McAlister and called Henson’s tract. Were James and Nancy husband and wife, or since it doesn’t state James McAlister and wife Nancy, were they brother and sister? James P. James P. married Sarah Ann Yowell 19 December 1831. He is probably the son of Joshua and may have been the John and Sarah McAlister who later lived in Parke County, Indiana. Betty Betty McAlister married William Fincham 9 Aug 1804 in Culpeper Co., VA. Minister was Lewis Conner, Baptist. Whose daughter was Elizabeth? If you have any information or are descended from any of these “unknown” McAlisters or any of the McAlisters descended from Finley McAlister and his children, we would be very happy to hear from you. We would be glad to share with you what we have and help you if we can.
Doris French is looking for Muhulda “Huldy” McAlister who married Nathan Hoggatt/Hoggett/Hockett of NC, in Parke Co., IN in 1835. We have been unable to to discover who Huldy’s parents are. Could she be the daughter of Allen, Charles or ? If you have any McAlisters in KY...Anderson, Franklin, Mercer, Shelby, Spencer, Washington and Woodford Counties KY we would be happy to hear from you. If you have any McAlisters in VA...Culpeper, Madison, Orange, Stafford, King George or Spotslvania counties.... If you have any McAlisters in Indiana...Parke, Jennings, Washington, Vigo or Fountain counties Or any McAlisters in any state that you think might be connected in any way we would love to hear from you.
