Anne first meets mischeivous Gilbert Blythe when he returns to his studies at the Avonlea school. Trying for Anne's attention, Gilbert teases her about her red hair and calls her the worst possible name -"carrots!"
Try as he may, Gilbert can not earn Anne's forgiveness. Even with a romantic rescue - with Anne stranded in a leaking boat in the river - can't get her to drop her grudge.
Anne and Gilbert finally make up and become good friends! However, Anne is sure they can never be anything more, and turns down Gilbert's marriage proposals.
