L. M. Montgomery:

A Profile

 

 

Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on November 30, 1874, in the town of Clifton,

Prince Edward Island. Her mother died when she was only two years old, and she lived

with her grandparents in Cavendish while her father traveled. Her father remarried

and settled inSaskatchewan, and soon Montgomery when to live with her new family;

however, she later returned to her beloved Prince Edward Island. She entered Prince

of Wales College, earned her teaching certificate, and then goes on to Dalhouise

College in Nova Scotia to study English Literature. After taking and leaving a teaching

position, she moved back with her grandmother in Cavendish, where she began to write

Anne of Green Gables.

 

After a short engagement to her second cousin, she meets and becomes engaged to

Ewan Macdonald, a Presbyterian minister. They marry July 5, 1911. Their first child,

Hugh Alexander, dies at birth. Mongomery gives birth to another baby, Ewan

Stuart. During this time, Montgomery started many of her best works, such as

Anne's House of Dreams and Emily of New Moon. They also have another son,

Chester.

 

Montgomery continued writing throughout the course of her life, in which she faces

lawsuits with publishers, strained relationships with her son Chester, and mental illness

in her husband. In April 1942, Montgomery died and was buried in Cavendish, leaving

behind a legacy of some of the world's best-loved literaure.
