"In all of us there is a hunger, marrow deep, to know our heritage,
to know who we are and where we have come from.
Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning.
No matter what our attainments in life, there is a most disquieting loneliness."
...Alex Haley

Born to William Henry Pelham of Winnipeg, Manitoba (formerly of Wellington, NZ), and Annie Pearl King of Regina, Saskatchewan.

Annie Pearl King
(1899-1974)
In 1918, Annie Pearl King was a first year school teacher in Saskatchewan. Bill Pelham, an immigrant from New Zealand with a family in Winnipeg, was a boarder for a while at her mother's boarding house in Regina. Twenty years older than Annie Pearl, Bill was a travelling Hart Parr tractor agent and a competitive Indian motorcycle racer, who raced across the prairies.

When Annie Pearl's condition became apparent, she was taken by family members by train to Calgary. There, she gave birth to a son in May 1919, whom she named after her brother serving in France during WWI, Herbert Lloyd King (which was a key in our search).

It would appear that giving her son a recognizable family name, and therefore his birthright, was the only matter over which she had control. We applaud her love.

Lloyd was raised by an American family who had a farm about 2 miles east of Strathmore on which is now Highway One. They named it Red Gate Farm

During WWII, Lloyd served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Markab in the Pacific.  Here is a link to my Markab page.

There are more photos of our family.  Click on these links for pages full of photos. May take a while to load, but if you're really curious.....

Nancy wrote several Poems for Annie Pearl

Click below for information about Parkinson Disease ...Lloyd's birthmother also had Parkinson's.
We understand that those who suffered from a severe form of the 1918 flu had a greater tendency toward Parkinson's, as do those of Irish descent.
