I am researching ancestors of Donald McCrimmon of Aurora, Ill. Donalds' parents were Norman and Elizabeth Ferguson McCrimmon. Norman were in Muskegan Michigan in 1886 when Donald was born.
There was at least one other brother, Norman.
I do know this Norman had 2 children, Ester and Grace, but I don't know his wifes name. Norman and Elizabeth migrated to the Chicago area. Donald married Hattie Millet of Batavia Ill in
1906 and they moved to Aurora, Ill. where they lived for the rest of their lives. They had 11

I am looking for the descendents of Patrick McCrimmon. Patrick was the son of Daniel McCrimmon and Rachel Currie. Rachel and Daniel were married in 1816 in Liberty County Georgia. They migrated to Smith County MS. Patrick was the brother of my gg grandfather, Daniel McCrimmon. We do not know what happened to Patrick. He and his family are on the 1860 Rankin County MS census, I have found no record of him after that date. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

HEBRIDEAN SURNAMES

The vast majority of the people on the island share only a few
surnames....Macleod, Murray, Maciver, Macdonald, Mackenzie, Morrison and
Macleay.

The 'Mac' means 'son of', therefore...MacLeod indicates 'the son of
Leod'. Peculiar to the Hebrides, root names are not capitalized, hence,
the name would be spelled Macleod without the capital 'L'.

FAMILY FIRST NAMES

Tradition dictates that first names reflect family history. While it is
not a hard and fast rule, these traditions were very strong during up
until a few years ago.

Under normal circumstances, the first two to four children would be named
after the paternal and maternal grandparents in no particular order other
than an adherence to the feminine and masculine genders.

Given this, the following members of Danny's (my grandfateher) family
would have been named for the following:

ALEXANDER CAMPBELL McLEOD - After the maternal grandfather, Alexander
Campbell of Lionel Ness.

DONALD DUNCAN MACLEOD - After the paternal grandfather, the Lewis
Shepherd...Domnull Dhonnacaidh of Galson Farm.

ELIZABETH CRAIGHY HENDERSON MACLEOD (LAWSON) - After the maternal
grandmother Elizabeth Craighy Henderson Pratice of Glasgow (wife of Angus
Murray....the Big Soldier from Tolsta).

MARGARET CAMPBELL MACLEOD (ROBSON) - After paternal grandmother, Margaret
Campbell of Lionel Ness.

DONALDA CORA ANNE MACLEOD (MILNE) - Initially named after Gormelia Murray
(Cora being the short form of Gormelia), and/or Annabelle's sister Cora
Anne.

Later, Donalda was added by Danny as the feminine form of Donald...either
after himself or his father. While Donna is the accepted short form for
Donalda, she was called Dolly within the family....which is an Anglicised
form of the Gaelic translation of Gormelia or Cora....Dollaig which may
account for the nickname 'Dolly' among the Gaelic speaking population of
Saskatchewan.

The same names will be repeated from generation to generation. A
possible exception to this might happen if the first and second child of
a family are stillborn, then the 'curse' would be removed by using a
biblical name.

Case in point, a relative in Shader is named Angus Ebanizer Macleod. His
father was born after two stillbirths and was named Ebanizer....which,
according to tradition is now a family name and will likely continue to
be used in generations to come.

If a family name was used for a child that died during birth or shortly
thereafter, that name would quite likely be used again for another child
in the family.

Quite often, the first child is named after the paternal grandparent.
If, but providence, the parent dies shortly after the child's birth, it's
name would be changed to the parents name. This happened to another of
our relatives who was named John after his paternal grandfather. A week
or so after the birth was registered, the father died....so the child's
name was changed to Donald in respect of his father. (see Appendix for
the certificate of name change).

NICKNAMES

A common practice in the Hebrides. Given the fact that there are only a
few surnames....and the traditional assignment of first names, there are
a great number of people who share the exact same names. In our family,
Donald and Margaret are the two most popular male and female names.

In order to differentiate one from another, the custom of using nicknames
has found very strong use. In many cases, a person is simply referred to
by his first and second name...sometimes in English or Gaelic...or a
combination of the two. For example, I met three Margaret Macleods all
from the same family (first or second cousins). They were known
as...Margaret Joan, Margie and Margaret Ishbal.

Within a few days, I was assigned the nickname "Ruaraidh Alex".

Also of interest, it is quite accepted that children address adults by
their first or nicknames instead of using the normal prefixes to which we
have become accustomed.

PEDIGREES

When you are trying to identify where your roots are, you can either go
through a long dissertation about 'who begat who' or simply string a
succession of first or nicknames together beginning with yourself...then
parent, grandparent and great grandparent until you reach the name of the
person to which you want to be identified.

Thus, the first day I was there, I was told to identify myself as:
"Ruaraidh, Alex, Danny, Domnull Dhonnacaidh" (Rod, Alex, Danny, Donald
Duncan). Took a bit of work to get my tongue around the Gaelic...but the
pedigree served me well on the west side of the island.

On the east or Tolsta side, (home of my grandmother), the pedigree would
be: "Ruaraidh, Alex, Annabelle, Saighdear Mor" (which translates to Rod,
Alex, Annabelle, Big Soldier).

On more then one occasion, I would be in conversation with a perfect
stranger and got onto the subject of what brought me to the island.
After determining where they were from, I would rattle off the
appropriate pedigree. More often than not, the person would tell me how
he was related to the same person!

One night while playing with the Lewis Pipe Band during the Gaelic Mod, I
was talking to a young piper in the band. Once I found that he was from
Tolsta, I offered my pitch...and he replied by saying that the "Saigdear
Mor" (Big Soldier) of Tolsta was his great grand uncle. Without further
adieu, his mother located the Murray family who today reside on the same
croft, and we launched into an impromptu family reunion.

Somewhere in the Oban Times letters to the editor, 1920s or 1930s, you will find someone's account of an extraordinary adventure by a MacCrimmon seafarer who had been shipwrecked somewhere in the Pacific during the 18th century. The letter was written, as I recall, by another Scottish seafarer who also had been shipwrecked on the same island, and, according to his account, he found this MacCrimmon living happily among natives and had developed a new instrument or two out of local materials, native musical instruments and the concept of the bagpipe. I spotted this letter while researching for my MA thesis on the 1920s-30s Oban Times piping essays of A.K. Cameron (1882-1956) of Montana, a disciple of the controversial Simon Fraser, Australia. Cameron was a strong proponent of the Cremona story.

John's father had been named Archibald and the 1790 census says he was born in Scotland. John and his family grew up and still has some descendents living in Telfair County, in southeast Georgia. My ggg-grandfather, Archibald MacCrimmon, was born at Swordland , Glen More, Glenelg, circa 1793. According to my grandfather, who was brought up in Glenelg, two of Archibald's brothers, Duncan and Farquhar, emigrated to Canada.
Their father's name was Duncan.
I thought there may be a connection due to the fact that the names of your Farquhar's children are identical to my Archibald's family , the only exception being Malcolm — could be coincidental but worth checking.

Boreraig appears to be an old Norse place name meaning "Thor's Bay".

Anyone doing any Boreraig related research needs to be careful, because in the Isle of Skye there were two villages named Boreraig [sometimes spelt Borerraig].

Recently I noticed Poulter was caught by the trap the same name for two places creates, in Book 1, where he says:-

"On 11 March, 1528 Donald Gruamach of Sleat was compelled to compensate John MacAngus, Borreaig, for cattle etc."

This is not a reference to the village of Boreraig in the west of Skye, near Galtrigal and Dunvegan, where the McCrimmon pipers were based.

It is a reference to the village of Boreraig in Strath, in the south of Skye, and very close to the western head of the Sleat peninsula. This village was razed in 1853, by trustees anxious to reduce the extent of the debts of the McDonalds of Sleat by expelling crofters and importing sheep.

MacAoghais translates into english as either McInnes or McAngus, and the village of Boreraig in Strath was a MacAoghais stronghold.

Despite the suggestions certain modern tour operators like to make, the well documented and brutal Boreraig clearances did not occur in the McCrimmon Boreraig village near Dunvegan.

My mother was a McCrimmon. Her grandfather Donald Angus came to Eldon Corner, Ontario in the 1880's. He moved West and worked with the CPR, finally settling in Crossfield, Alberta.

My Grandfather was from Brucehill Dumbarton and I believe all of us with the spelling - McCrimmon - as against MacCrimmon must be related as there are/were quite a few of us in the Glasgow/Dumbarton/Renton areas.
I have? an Aunt Annabelle married to my Uncle Jimmy McCrimmon deceased 196?, who was a Chief Engineer in the Merchant Navy and from Dumbarton. Like a lot of relations we unfortunately lose touch.

Susan, Did your Archibald McCrimmon die in Nc or Sc. An Archibald McCrimmon, who I think was living in NC, or SC for the 1790 census moved near Augusta, Georgia and died in the area. His widow then moved with the rest of her family to Montgomery County in Southeast Georgia. Later her son John settled in what was then one county over, Telfair. Some of the descendents still live in the area. My grandmother married first one of John's sons, Tommy, and after his death married my grandfather. John had a large family, but one name which stands out in my mind was Farquhar, who died in the Confederate Army. I wonder what my great great grandfather Donald McCrimmon of Woodville, Ontario would have said could he have seen the latest supposed Mac Crimmon Tartan being put on the
market to-day by a family in Guelph, Ontario.
The new watered down version of the Mac Leod of Harris in no way whatsoever represents the Mac Crimmon Royal Blue Kilt of the Ancient Past and still in existence to-day and worn by a present day Mac Crimmon.
Families in Scotland, Canada and elsewhere across the world are more than disturbed over this item as few, if any had been contacted as to a change being made re their precious Blue Kilt. Being very religious people, the Mac Crimmon's certainly took the color of the Heavenly Skies the Blue Lochs, the Blue distant hills of Harris and the Heather covered Hills as their love of a family colour. The National Flag of Scotland strongly shows the Blue Background in its make-up. Many continental Europeans came from various religious back grounds, they seem to favour Blue Colours in their uniforms when attending world-wide athletic events.
Writers, especially in Scotland have for many, many years mentioned the MacCrimmons and the Blue Kilt this family was known to have worn. Surely Clan Mac Leod of Scotland for whom their Hereditary Piping Family were Mac Crimmons for over 300, years would have recognized the Blue Kilt as a Mac Crimmon trade mark so to speak. One of the most prestigious awards in our modern world of Piping, is held each year in London, England when the top Gold Medallist Pipers compete for the honor of winning the coveted Bratach Gorm' which is a Blue Banner donated in the 1930,s by Dr. Calum Mac Crimmon from the Isle of Skye. The Doctor who was the Chieftain of Clan Mac Crimmon Society in the early 1930,s, always wore his Blue Kilt even to the unveiling of the Mac Crimmon Cairn at Borreraig in Skye, he was a believer in the colors worn by the Celtic and Druids from whom our people descended . The British infantry in Caesar's time were known to have worn Blue painted uniforms. An ancient fable states that when Adam and Eve were being banished from the Garden of Eden, all the plants turned away their heads in shame, save one tiny Blue flower which called out, "Forget Me Not".
Let us not lose sight of our Blue Skies so close to Heaven and the outer space or the next thing we know our very much revered Piobaireachd Bagpipe compositions will be altered to suit some persons fancy. In closing Forget Me Not, yes we Mac Crimmons still abide by our heritage beliefs and trust the love of our families will never die for one another. Highlanders Through and Through.

Slainte, I'm not sure what your ggGrandfather Donald MacCrimmon would have thought of the new MacCrimmon kilt but, I can tell you that this Donald McCrimmon thinks the MacCrimmon tartan is outstanding and is incredibly proud to be the owner of the very first MacCrimmon tartan kilt. We gave it to our eldest son Paul (24yrs) on Chistmas Day and I can assure you it looks magnificant. Perhaps it would have been wise for you to actually see the Kilt before passing judgment on this wounderful creation of Irene MacCrimmon. This was not a simple overnite project, but one which took a tremendous amount of labour and love. I also think that it would have been wise of you to research who "this family from Guelph" really is, you might be suprised!

Thanks very much to everyone for their support to date for our forthcoming book on the MacCrimmon Piping Family.
A significant portion of the book centres on the Skye Clearances 1820s-1850s.
Already we have discovered an excellent primary source on MacCrimmons who were assisted to Autralia by the Highlands & slands Emigration Society. The manuscript, deposited in the National Library of Australia, makes poignant reading.
Does anyone have anything they would like to add to this period.
We have copies of all the Poulter material and all other published books on the subject already.

We have a manuscript for a new book on the MacCimmon Piping Family which is 96% complete. It explores the history of the family, their place within the clan system, popular tales - but importantly views the whole subject within the economic and social standpoint of the time.
It also deals with Alistair Campsie's theories, MacCrimmon piobaireachd and the last of the MacCrimmons in some detail - and concludes with emigration from Boreraig, Lowerkill and Glenelg.

This book has been twenty years in research and becomes it virtually represents the adult life work of the author we are determined that it should not leave any stone unturned.

Just received word about your pending addition to the MacCrimmon library. My hearty congratulations on researching and recording the history of this great family.

I have read many pieces...without fail, all fall just short of the mark. When Donald Ruadh resigned his post as 8th Hereditary Piper to the MacLeod...most assume that the story ends! In the persuit of accuracy, nobody has taken the time to follow the thread to his descendents and the subsequent re-establishment of the hereditary line.

As you are probably aware, during WWII, Malcolm MacCrimmon (of Vancouver Canada) went to war as a piper in the Calgary Highlanders. Due to the scholarly work of George Poulter (a student of the MacCrimmon family history), Malcolm was appointed 9th hereditary piper by Dame Flora while visiting Dunvegan Castle.

On Sept 17, 1978, Malcolm's son Iain Norman MacCrimmon was subsequently formally appointed by John MacLeod of MacLeod.... documented, signed and sealed as the 10th hereditary piper. Any printed account of the MacCrimmons that does not acknowledge the re-establishment of the line is doing a great dis-service to the history of the MacCrimmon pipers.

Lovedy Ann and Roderick lived on James' Creek in Northwestern Cumberland Co., a few miles southwest of present Southern Pines. Roderick was the son of Angus and Margaret McCrimmon and may have been born in Moore County. He was married earlier to Flora McIver and had sons Angus and Daniel. Lovedy Ann and Roderick are buried in a wooded cemetery near their home at the confluence of Tuckahoe and James' creeks.

I can confirm the correctness of most of Anita's reply to you with regard to the line of 1a Thomas MacCrimmon, although my wife Sandra insists that he was Thomas McCrimmon. Although we reside in the Toronto area, we in fact married in Liverpool. The story of the dispute between the two brothers is family legend that Sandra heard as a child. In fact, when her grandmother registered her birth, Sandra's last name was spelled McCrimman, supposedly as a peace offering!

Not sure whether this helps, but good luck in your search. Sandra's brother was doing some research on the family history, so will ask him to contact you if he can add more information.

I hope everyone is well. I am looking for information on Annie McCrimmon who was born about 1846 in Glenelg Scotland (possibly Oban). She married Alexander Beaton on the Isle of Skye 3 Oct 1861. Alexander was born 1837/1841. Alexander died in Blaine Washington 1 Sept 1908. Annie died in Aberdeen (Surrey) BC 24 Aug 1908. Annies' father was Kenneth and her mother was Catherine Bethune. She had at least two brothers, Malcolm and Archibald. I don't know anything about Malcolm but Archibald lived in Vancouver BC, Canada and made fiddles. He died Nov 7, 1927.

I have traced my tree back to Sarah McCrimmon who was born in Glenelg about 1830/31. She married a Donald Macrae from Kintail in about 1853 and after having a couple of children in Glenelg, they moved to Croy in Invernessshire. I found references to the family in all the censuses upto 1881 but haven't found out when/where Sarah died. I am descended through her daughter (also called Sarah). Can anyone help me trace Sarah back further - I couldn't find anything in Parish or census records that help.

Married at Dundee, 10 Oct., 1924, MARIE JULIETTE, daughter of M. Paul PONTET of St. Ambroix, Gard, in the South of France, huissier of the Banque de France, and has issue PADRUIG RENE OG, born at Dundee 27 Sep., 1931.

Does anyone know why it failed? I am up in skye this summer and was hoping to visit....

It is a nice thought that we McCrimmons could all chip in but I believe the problem is one of keeping it going. Nevertheless I would be interested in knowing more about the Centre and how it was set up and how its income generation matched the business plan.

It is great to find a web page just for McCrimmon and MacCrimmon family. My mother's maiden name was McCrimmon and her brother has been working extensively with tracing family roots. We were originally Mac instead of Mc but are unsure when this changed. My 6 greats grandfather was Duncan McCrimmom and he arrived in Georgia from Scotland in the 1700's. I do not know anything of his life or family in Scotland. I don't even know how to begin. I'd like to know more because I'm planning a trip to England and Scotland in the fall. I'd love to see family related sites!

I am glad to see so many interested in and working on the McCrimmon family of Georgia. If you are researching the McCrimmons, who settled first in Montgomery County and later Telfair and Ben Hill Counties in southeast Georgia. I would like to share information with you. My father was Kenneth Francis McCrimmon and his father was Peter McLeod McCrimmon. Peter was born in Ontario as was his father, Duncan McCrimmon. Duncan's father, also Duncan, was born in Glenelg, Scotland and came to Canada on the Eliza of London in 1815, with his father, John, mother, Catherine and siblings, which included Farquhar and Donald. I would like to contact more members of this family.

THE SILVER CHANTER.

There are many traditions associated with the MacCrimmon pipers, the most famous of which concerns the Silver Chanter. It is said that the MacCrimmons proficiency with the pipes and their appointment as heriditary pipers to the MacLeods was due to the possession of a magic chanter aquired from a member of the Fairy World. One day Iain Og MacCrimmon, one of the early members of the family, sat playing his pipes on a mound near his home at Borreraig. Iain was sad because his piping was not skillful enough to gain entry to a competition being held by the MacLeod chief at Dunvegan Castle. As he played, the green mound opened before him and out rose a Fairy who asked Iain why he was so sad. On being told the reason, the fairy said " The sweetness of your music has brought you a Fairy sweetheart, I give you this Silver Chanter, which, at the touch of your fingers, will bring forth the sweetest music. " The Fairy gave to Iain a beautiful Silver Chanter and with it, the art of Pibroch. Iain Og went immediately to Dunvegan and was allowed to play before the Chief. The judges were astonished by Iain's piping and declared him to be the best of the assembled musicians. The MacCrimmons were subsequently awarded the position of hereditary pipers to the MacLeod Chiefs.

The Silver Chanter is also said to have been the cause of the demise of the great MacCrimmon family. When the Fairy gave the Chanter to Iain Og, she cautioned that if he or any other member of the family ever treated it with disrespect, the gift of the Fairies would disappear forever. Centuries later, the Chief of the MacLeods was returning home by boat from Raasay accompanied by one of Iain's descendants who occupied the traditional piper's seat at the head of the galley. The crossing was rough and the swell on the tide made piping difficult. As MacCrimmon tried to play, his fingers continually slipped from the chanter and eventually he threw down the pipes and gave voice to his annoyance. The Silver Chanter immediately detached itself from the pipes, rose up from the galley and then plunged into the sea where it remains to this day. The charm was broken and in a short time the supremacy of the MacCrimmon piper's declined and their College at Borreraig fell into decay.

Just wanted to say how excited I was to find this site. I am 26 and have just started to really want to know about my last name and all the wonderful stories I hear about it. I am the daughter of a surgeon in AL with 4 older brothers: Cyrus, Michael, Patrick and Kevin; and a younger sister, Kelly. I've heard that we are Scottish and from others that we are Irish. I would love to hear from someone who could clarify this for me. Also, one of my brothers did someone research on our name and found some information that we were so violent that we were thrown off of Scotland. Has anyone else heard this? We're known to have tempers, but I hope not to this severity...ha, ha!

My McCrimmon ancestors lived on the mainland near Glenelg; just down the road from that village is one of the ferry routes to Skye. McCrimmons lived on Skye and near Skye, as well as on Lewis and Harris. Not many are there, now, however. My own ancestors left Scotland because the Laird who owned the land they lived on, had to sell it because of back taxes and the new owner wanted to run sheep on the land. I saw where the Laird once lived. Many Scottish people came to America in the late 1700's, expecially to North Carolina. Still others came to Canada in the early 1800's and settled in eastern Ontario. Many of those who came to Canada moved to Michigan or moved west in Canada. The McCrimmons were a sept of the Clan McLeod, that means they were under the protection of the McLeod and served the Chief of that Clan if called upon to do so, especially in wartime. Good luck with your research.

To anyone else bearing the MacCrimmon title:
The book, The MacCrimmon Family, was written by George Poulter, a dedicated student of MacCrimmon history prior to WWII.
Malcolm MacCrimmon, a piper in the Calgary Highlanders, met George Poulter while in London during the war. Malcolm knew of his famous ancestors and had proven the link between himself and Donald Ruadh, (the last of the famous line who taught their music at Borreraig on Skye). On leave one weekend, young MacCrimmon went to Dunvegan and met Dame Flora who re-established the link by appointing Malcolm as the 9th Hereditary Piper to the MacLeod of MacLeod.
Malcolm was the only highlander during WWII to be transferred from a Canadian regiment to a British Regiment….the famed Scot's Guards. He was also accorded the singular privilege of wearing his MacLeod ribbons along with the Royal Stewart ribbons on his pipes.
Malcolm married Mairi Chisholm from Gravir on the Isle of Lewis and returned to raise a family in western Canada. Padruig, Iain and Flora are his children. Iain took up the pipes and distinguished himself as the first published composer of pipe music in Canada. His books 1,2,3 & 4 are available in better music bookstores.
In the late 1970's, Iain was appointed as 10th hereditary piper by Chief John MacLeod of MacLeod while John was touring western Canada. In the late 1980's, Iain along with his wife Charlotte, daughter Katie and son Calum moved to a small town of Monifeith, just a few miles east of Dundee. Young Calum is already making his mark in the piping world…. and will undoubtedly follow in his father's footsteps.
Malcolm resides in the Highlands district of Edmonton, Alberta Canada and has made the MacCrimmon genealogy his life's work. He has printed a beautifully illuminated MacCrimmon family tree to commemorate his forefathers.

Mary Campbell from Vatten on 23rd April 1832 at

Sounds like you have a great resource. My family has been traced to a Malcolm McCrimmon who was born in Scotland (presumably Skye or thereabouts) in 1742 and came to Moore County, NC in 1780's. (his grandson changed the name to McCrummen because he was told that was the way they were spelling it in Scotland, but he continued to pronounce it McCrimmon). I know that Malcolm was a common name for the clan, but I wonder if the book mentions any Malcolm McCrimmon in Scotland born about that time? Thanks for any info.

I have just come across a CDROM for both PC and MAC called "The Great Highland Bagpipe" which has quite a bit of useful information on about the MacCrimmons and their role in developing the music of the Highland bagpipe (over 30 pages worth of information on the MacCrimmons with some potentially useful references for budding genealogists) but lots on other piping families also.

If you are a MacCrimmon then you should take time to explore the bagpipe....I'm putting a web page together to share what I know of the subject which I hope to uplaod fairly soon to the Registry.
