Settlement in Barbados 1627 - 1880

While searching my family tree I found that a branch of the Mofford family owned land in St. Phillips Parish Barbados in 1715. I was curious to learn more.
I researched many books and resources on the history of the settlement of Barbados and learned all I could from the good people on the West Indies genealogy newsgroup and anywhere I could find information on the internet. My primary focus is on the Mofford family but I found interesting stories and facts concerning other pioneering families of Barbados, some linked to my family, some not.
This page is intended as a start - to provide the amature genealogist, interested in tracing relatives who lived in Barbados by utilizing such tools as maps, contacts and related links with the goal of aiding all in their search.

Some basic information regarding the Island nation of Barbados.
One hundred sixty-six square miles Barbados was settled by the English in 1627 although ships from many nations had visited the Caribbean Island - the English as early as 1605. Slaves laboured on the many sugar plantations on the Island until slavery was abolished in 1834. While many British traditions remain, Barbados gained full independence on November 30, 1966.
