Barnes DNA Study   

In 2001 a group of Barnes descendants in an attempt to try and identify the various Barnes families and their immigrant ancestor began a DNA study using the male y-chromosome.  To learn more about the use of DNA in genealogy click here  DNA - 101  Thus far twelve families containing two or more individuals have been identified.  They are Group 1 - descendants of immigrant Nathaniel Barnes who immigrated to Harpswell, Maine c 1731, Group 2 - descendants of James and Ketura Shipley Barnes who first appeared on record in 1698 in Balitmore Co., MD and may be the immigrant who came over on the Cecilius from Bristol, England in April, 1676, and Group 3 are desendants of Thomas Barnes of Hartford, CT who immigrated to the West Indies in September 1635 from England and later arrived in New England.  He was born in Essex Co., England c 1615.  Group 4 are descendants of Thomas Barnes of Marlborough, MA 1656.  The other groups are yet to define their immigrant ancestor(s) but are making progress.  These families are represented by the colored rows below.  Uncolored rows contain only one person thus far.  To join this study, click on the link below or at the bottom of the page.  http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_det.asp?group=Barnes&projecttype=S   The person being tested must be a male and have the surname of Barnes since this is a y-chromosome DNA study.  Both the 12 and 25 allele test are being used as needed to define the Most Recent Common  Ancestor.   UNDERSTANDING MRCA
