The story of ABU Garcia.

Abu Garcia was founded by Carl August Borgstrom in Svangsta, Sweden, at the Mörrum River in 1921. In the beginning, the company made taxi meters, telephone timers, pocket watched and other precision instruments. Carl died in 1934 and his son took over the factory. Due to the war in Europe, the business was affected badly. Göte Borgstrom, an Engineer and an avid fisherman himself decided to turn his skill into making fishing reels.

The generation of world famous Ambassadeur reels got its start here in the early 1952/1953 with the introduction of the Record Ambassadeur Model SG. A year later, the "Record Ambassadeur 5000" was introduced outside Sweden for the first time at the New York World's Fair.

ABU made the first spinning reel the "ABU 444" in 1955. This was followed by the Cardinal spinning reel in 1965.

In 1988, ABU Garcia was bought over by the Aritmos Group, a public listed Swedish company whose core business are in sporting/leisure goods and food processing. This arrangement did not last long until 1995 when ABU Garcia was sold to America's OTG (Outdoor Technology Group) who also own Fenwick and Berkley.
