Obituary of Patrick Breen
    Patrick Breen was born in Ireland in 1847 and died at Yankton, SD March 23, 1936 at the age of 89 years.
    He came with his parents to this country in 1854, when he was 7 years of age, settling in Cedar County, Iowa.  When a young man of 24, he moved to Adair, Iowa, in 1871.  Here he was united in marriage to Fanny Grow in 1874 at Fountainell, Iowa.  In 1898 the Breen family moved to Armour, SD where they have lived ever since.
    Mrs. Breen preceded her husband in death 24 years ago.  The eleven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Breen are all living.  They are; Mrs. Henry Kellogg of Letcher, SD, Mike Breen of Ipswich, SD, Frank Breen of Armour, SD George Breen of Armour, SD, Tom Breen of Hot Springs, SD; Mrs. Hattie Stage, Mitchell, Nebr.; Rob Breen, Artesian, SD; Mrs. Katie Dickman, Armour, SD; Mrs. Nellie Wilson, Mitchell, SD and Bill Breen Armour, SD.  All being present for the funeral.
    He is also survived by 60 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
    He was confirmed in the Roman Catholic Church in his youth.
    Funeral services were held from the Rokke Funeral Home Armour, SD, Thursday morning, March 26, 1936 with the Rev. A. R. Boone in charge.  The old hymns "Rock of Ages" "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Nearer My God to Thee" were sung by a mixed quartette.  Interment was made in the Armour Cemetery.

Obituary of Fannie Elizabeth (Grow) Breen
    Mrs. F. E. Breen passed away at her home in the east part of town Saturday evening, march 2, 1912, at 7:30 pm after an illness of several weeks duration.  The cause of death was exhaustion die to an operation she underwent some four weeks ago for the removal of gall stones.  She had been a sufferer for some time with the above trouble and when the operation was performed it was found that she was suffering from an internal cancer which hastened her death.
    Deceased was born in Pella, Iowa April 24, 1856 being thus at the time of her death, 55 years, 8 months and 8 days old.
    She was married to Patrick Breen at Avondale, Iowa, September 13, 1874.  From Avondale, they moved to Menlo, Iowa, where they resided 20 years moving form there to Armour in the spring of 1898, residing on a farm two and a half miles northwest of Armour.
    Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Breen, five girls and six boys, all of whom together wit the husband and father, live to mourn the death of wife and mother.  They are as follow:  Mrs. Henry Kellogg of Stickney; Mike Breen, Armour; Frank Breen, Scotland; Tom, Corsica; Mrs. A. Stage, Mount Vernon; Jennie, Robert, Katie, Nellie and Willis, of Armour.  Besides the above she leaves one sister, Mrs.. L. D. Winner of Corsica.
    The funeral was held Tuesday, Rev. Father Cary, officiating.  Interment was made in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.

J. M. Hansler Funeral Rites Held at Vivian
    Funeral services for Joseph Hansler of Vivian, who died at a Pierre Hospital Jan 31, were held at the Vivian Methodist Church Feb. 3 with the Rev. Mr. Hairgrove officiating.  A men's quartet sang with Mrs. Delmer King at the piano.
    Burial was at Armour.  Pall bearers were David Brown, Ed Gannon, John Hullinger, Lyle Hulce, Fred Koester and Herburt Smith.
    Mr. Hansler was born in Germany Dec 31, 1889, the son of Joseph and Mary Kummer.  He came to this country with his parents when an infant.  The family first settled around Milbank.  Later they moved to Armour and in 1908 to Jones County where they homesteaded.
    In 1912 Mr. Hansler returned to Armour and married Jennie Breen on Nov. 20 that year.  The family moved to Draper in 1917 and latter lived in the Vivian area for about 42 years.  He was a retired farmer.
    Survivors are his widow, three sons, Lawrence, Roy and Virgil and two daughters, Mrs. Forrest Hulce of Presho and Mrs. Ray Recoy of Reliance.  Also surviving are one brother Edward of Mitchell and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Crago of Armour and Mrs. Frances Klien of Kewanee, Ill, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  An infant daughter preceded him in death.  (1974, Republican News Service)

Hansler Rites at Vivan with Burial at Armour
    Funeral services for Joseph M. Hansler, retired Vivian farmer and pioneer of Jones County, were held at the Vivian Community Auditorium Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 1 PM.
    The Rev. Kenneth Hairgrove, Presho, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiated.  Mrs. Delmer King was at the piano and accompanied a men's quartet which sang two hymns.  In the group were Burke Severyn, Lonis Wendt, Arlo Huffman and David Moore.
    Pall bearers were David Brown, Edward Gannon, Lyle Hulce, Herbert Smith, Allen Bower and John Hullinger.
    Burial was made at Armour.  Sorensen Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
    Joseph Martin Hansler was born to Joseph and Mary (Kummer) Hansler on Dec. 31, 1889 in Germany.  Shortly after his birth the family came to the United States and settled around Millbank and Montevideo, Minn.  Later they moved to Armour where he grew to manhood.
    In 1908 he accompanied his parents to Jones County where they homesteaded until 1912 and then returned to Armour.
    He was united in marriage to Jennie Breen on Nov. 20, 1912.  In 1917 the family moved to Draper to farm and later settled at Vivian where they have lived about 42 years.  He died Jan. 31 at St. Mary's Hospital, Pierre, following a lingering illness.
    Preceding him in death were an infant daughter, Viola Mae, his parents and one sister, Mrs. Annie Eich.
    Survivors are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Ray Recoy (Bernice), Reliance, and Mrs. Forrest Hulce (Elnora), Presho; three sons, Lawrence, Roy and Virgil; two sisters Mrs. Margaret Crago, Armour and Mrs. Frances Klein, Kewanee, Ill; four granddaughters, Darlene and Dianne Hulce, Presho; Mrs. Dewayne Kercher (Patty Ann), Oacoma, and Mrs. Ray Norton (Joleen), Ft. Pierre; five great grandsons.
    Relatives attending the services were Edward Hansler, Henry Kellogg and F. G. Funeral Services For Jennie Breen Hansler
    Funeral Services were held Wednesday, May 16 at the American Lutheran Church in Vivian with Rev. Kip Roozen officiating  the 10 AM ceremony.
    Jennie was born on October 30, 1889 at Greenfield, Iowa daughter of Fannie and Patrick Breen and she passed away on Monday, May 14th in St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.  She had 4 sisters and 6 brothers.
    When she was 8 years old the family moved to the Armour area and in 1909 they moved to Lyman County to take up a homestead near Draper, SD.  She first worked on several ranches and later at the Draper Hotel.  In 1911 they moved back to Armour.
    On November 20, 1912 she was married to Joseph Hansler and to this union 6 children were born,  In 1917 they moved back to Draper and in 1922 to the Vivian area where she has since made her home until moving into Rivercrest Nursing Home in Pierre, 8 years ago.
    LaDonna Breen and George Breen, a niece and nephew came to live with them in 1949.
    She is survived by one daughter, Elnora Hulce, Presho, 3 sons Lawrence Plankington, Roy and Virgil of Vivian, 4 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren.
    Preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 daughters, one great grandson and all of her brothers and sisters.
    Donna Erikson was the organist at the service with Arlo Huffman as soloist.  He sang "The Old Rugged Cross," and "In the Garden."
    Casketbearers were Bob Meinen, Emmer Hulce, Ellis Hullinger, Edwin Strom, Dan Severyn  and LeRoy Authier.  Dave Moore was the usher with Lillian Severyn at the register book and memorials.
    Jennie was laid to rest in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery at Armour, SD.  Arrangements were made by Hofmeister Funeral Home with Maxine and Lauren as directors.     (1984)
 
 

Bernice Marie (Hansler) Recoy
    Bernice Marie Hansler was born July 2, 1914 at Armour, SD of parents Joseph and Jennie Hansler.  She moved to Lyman Co. in 1919 and has lived there all her life except for 9 years in Tripp Co., from 1967 to 1976 then moving to Oacoma.
    She was united in marriage to Ray Recoy on Jan. 5, 1935 at Kennebec, SD.  Bernice passed away Aug. 26, 1978 at the Community Bailey Hospital in Chamberlain at the age of 64 years, 1 month and 24 days.  She is survived by her husband Ray of Oacoma; 2 daughters PattyAnn Peterson of Oacoma and Joleen Norton of Correctionville, Ia; 3 brothers, Lawrence of Plankington, Roy and Virgil both of Vivian, 1 sister, Mrs. Forrest (Elnora) Hulce, Presho and 10 grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her father, twin sons, and sister.
    Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon Aug. 29th in the McColley Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain, Rev. George Kalb officiated with internment in Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain.
    Casket bearers were Lois Hutmacher, Gary Mahrt, Kent Hamiel, Tom Fenenga, Larry Audiss, and Jerry Kistler.  Brad Lewis was the soloist accompanied by Becky Kalb at the organ.
    Vivianites attending the funeral were Edwin and Hilda Strom and May Hulce besides relatives.    (1978)

Ray A. Recoy funeral rites
    Funeral services for Ray A. Recoy, 72, Oacoma, were at 10:30 am Saturday, Cot 18, 1986, in First Baptist Church with the Rev. L. Deverle Cooper officiating.
    Burial was in Riverview Cemetery.
    He died Cot 15 in Sunset Valley Haven.
    He was born Jan. 7, 1914 to Nora (Kinkennon) and Jesse Recoy in Ethan.  As a small child he moved with his parents to Vivian.  He married Bernice Hansler on Jan. 5, 1935, in Kennebec.  They lived in the Vivian area until 1948, moving to Reliance where he worked as a farm laborer until 1967 when they moved to the Hamill area.  They moved to Oacoma in 1976 when he retired.
    Survivors include two daughter, Patty Peterson of Oacoma and Joleen Norton of Chamberlain; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two brothers, Ted of Orient, Iowa, and Robert of Springdale, Ark.; four sisters, Helen Martin of Hamill, Anna Kinkennon of Cerston, Iowa, Mae Hedlund of Ft. Dodge, Iowa and Margaret Foster of Gowrie, Iowa.
    He was preceded in death by his wife on Aug. 16, 1978, twin sons, a grandson, two brothers and a sister.

L. D. Winner passes away
    Lazarus David Winner died at his home in Corsica Tuesday morning, March 7th.  He has been an invalid for months and lately has been confined to the house.  He was born in Columbia County, PA, Dec. 3, 1851 and was 70 years, 3 months and 4 days old at the time of his death.  he was married to Mrs. W. DeLosier at Fontelle, Iowa on Dec 3, 1872 and to this union seven children were born.  Samuel of Geddes, Sherman and Mrs. J. A. Mullen of Corsica, Mrs. L. E. Palmatier of Miles City, Mont. and Mrs. J. Den Herder, two having passed away.  In September, 1902, the family moved from Valley Junction, Iowa to Armour, and in the spring of 1906 moved to Corsica, where they have resided since.  There are five sisters that also survive him.
    The deceased was well known  to all the people of this vicinity.  he always had a pleasant greeting for everyone, and "Dad", as he is known to all, will be missed by many.
    The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the late residence of the deceased.  Rev. Harry Van Egmond will conduct the services.  (Corsica Globe)

 Mrs. Amanda M. Winner Dies
    After years of suffering and being bedridden, Mrs. Amanda M. Winner was relieved of her agony by death Monday morning, April 17th, 1922.
    She was born at Ottumwa, Iowa, May 8, 1848, and was 73 years, 11 months and 9 days of age at the time of her death.  She was married to James De Losier in 1865, and to this union one son was born, Wm. H. De Losier, now residing at Howe, Idaho.  James De Losier was killed while a soldier in the war between the states.  On Dec 3rd, 1872, she was united in marriage to L. D. Winner, and to this union seven children were born, namely: Sam Winner of Geddes; Mrs. James A. Mullen and Sherman Winner of Corsica; Mrs. L. E. Palmatier of Miles City, Mont.; Mrs. Amanda Den Herder of Sioux Falls.  Two having passed away.
    In Sept. 1902, the family moved form Valley Junction, Iowa to Armour, and in the spring of 1906, moved to Corsica.  She is the last one of a family of six.
    The funeral was held at the home at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. Father Carey of the Catholic Church of Armour.  She was laid to rest by the side of her husband, who passed away on the 7th of March, 1922, in Graceland Cemetery, Corsica.     (1922)

Joseph Kercher drowning victim
    Joseph Darold Kercher, 20 of Reliance drowned in a stock dam at the Dale Hall farm, located three miles north and one and one fourth miles east of Reliance.  The drowning accident occurred at 12:30 PM Tuesday May 10.
    Lyman County Deputy Sheriff John Michalek, one of the investigating offices at the scene, stated that the accident happened when Kercher, an employee at the Hall farm, attempted to ride his horse across the dam.  The horse went down and Kercher was not able to make it to shore.
    Investigating the accident and taking part in the recovery efforts were the Lyman County Sheriff Department, Brule County Sheriff, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Game, Fish and Parks Department and neighbors of the Halls.
    The body was recovered at 2:30 PM by LeRoy Choal, a Reliance diver.
    Joseph Kercher was a former resident of Oacoma and a Chamberlain High School graduate.
    Funeral services were held Friday at the First Baptist Church in Chamberlain.    (1983)

Lawrence E. Hansler
    Lawrence E. Hansler, 78, of Plankington, SD, died at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls on Tuesday Feb. 20, 1996.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 24, 1996 at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church in Plankington, Rev. Richard Salmonson Officiated.  Burial was in the Black Hills National Cemetery at Sturgis on Monday February 26, 1996 at 8:30 AM.
    Mr. Hansler was born March 10, 1917, at Armour, SD, to Joe and Jennie (Breen) Hansler.  He attended country school at Vivian, SD.  He entered the U.S. Army on March 21, 1941 and served during World War II in the Philippines, Guadal Canal, Saipan, and New Britton, for which he was the recipient of the Bronze Star.  He was honorably discharged on August 28, 1945.  At that time he received a citation for heroic achievement.  It read: "For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy near Bamban, Luzon, P.I., Jan. 27, 1945.  Despite heavy enemy machine gun fire which had pinned down two platoons of his company, Sgt. Hansler volunteered to go to the aid of a wounded comrade.  Disregarding the intense fire and his own safety, he succeeded in crawling over the comparatively open terrain and bringing his comrade back to a place of safety.  His action so inspired the other men of his company that they succeeded in taking the ground from a determined enemy."
    He returned to Vivian where he ranched with his two brothers and his father until he married Viola Keith, on February 1, 1969, at Sioux Falls.  They then moved to Plankington where he continued to be involved in the livestock business.  He was a member of the Methodist Church, the Buggy Seat Cowboys of Wessington Springs, the VFW, and the American Legion of Plankington.
    He is survived by; his wife, Viola; one son, Lawrence and his wife Nancy Syverud of Minneapolis, MN; two brothers, Roy Hansler and Virgil Hansler , both of Vivian; one sister, Mrs Forrest (Elnora) Hulce of Presho, SD; one granddaughter, Hadley; and several nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by two sisters and his parents.
 

Mrs Frank (LaVerna) Marshall
              
     Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Draper, S.D., on Saturday August 23, 1969 for  Mrs Frank (LaVerna) Marshall, with Rev. Carl Evans officiating. A quartette composed of Mrs. Sam Smith, Mrs. Louis Dowling, Mrs. Orville Hurst and Elsa Sharp, sang several numbers with Mrs. Fred Frederickson as organist.
     Casket bearers were: Marlin Spears, Keith Louder, Orville Fuoss, Wilmar Ernest, Keith Hayes, Fred Esmay.
     Myron Pierce ushered and Mrs. Keith Louder registered the guests. Interment was made in the Draper Cemetery with Hofmeisters in charge of arrangements.
     She was born Aug. 10, 1913 at Platte, S.D. to Mr. and Mrs. William Wolff and died Aug. 20, 1969 at a Rapid City Hospital.
     On July 9, 1933 she was united in marriage to Frank Marshall, at Kimball, S.D. She spent part of that year with her parents while Frank was getting their home north of Draper ready.
     The family lived at this location until 1949 when they moved to their present home in Draper.
     To this family were born two children, Ellen (Mrs Donald Volmer) in 1934 and Earl in 1939.
     LaVerna was active in the Draper community. Through the years she took part in the Prairie Home, W.S.C.S., the Parent Teacher Organization, Red Cross Work, Swimming Pool Association, and the Draper Women's Club.
     She served as Draper Postmaster from 1949 to the time of her death. During this time she was a member of the State, and National Postal Association, (M.A.P.U.S.) attending most state meetings and one national meeting.
     She leaves to mourn, her husband, Frank, daughter Ellen Volmer, son, Earl and six grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Thurman Hullinger and three brothers, Virgil, Meril and Raymond Wolff.
     She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother.

     Kimball; Mr. and Mrs. Steve Adams, Ethan; George Gukesin, and Mary Krogman, Mitchell; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Buxcel, Okaton; Mrs. Jim Dickey, Caputa; Mr. and Mrs. Edwin McQuisten, Sioux Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth  Spear, Hot Springs; Mr. and Mrs. William Marshall, Ft. Pierre; Mr. Richard Roush, Rapid City; Mr. and Mrs. Larry Byrd, Kadoka; Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Farris, Pierre; Mrs. Olive Hendrickson, and Mrs. Lillie Hanson, Pierre; and many other friends from away.

W. Ed Marshall (1868-1934)
         Ed Marshall, well known Kolls Township farmer, passed away at the Chamberlain Sanitarium early Tuesday  morning after a few days illness. Mr. Marshall's last illness overtook him suddenly and unexpectedly and the news of his critical sickness and finally his death came to the people of Jones County as a distinct shock. Mr. Marshall was in Murdo Friday afternoon and at that time he was not feeling any too well but nothing much was thought of it until Saturday evening it was announced that the sick man had taken a turn for the worse and his condition was critical. It was thought that he could not live through Saturday night. He was being taken care of at the Joe Roush home at Draper, and Sunday morning he showed signs of a slight improvement and he was taken to the Sanitarium.
     The remains of Mr. Marshall were returned to his home at Draper and funeral services were held from the Methodist Church and burial was made in the Draper Cemetery. Mrs. Marshall preceded her husband in death by more than 11 years, passing away on June 18, 1923.
     The deceased is survived by seven children, all of Draper. The children are: Mrs. Kenneth Spear, Mrs. Harold Louder, Mrs. Hugh Roush, and four sons, namely: O. W., Franklin, Edward and Donald. To these the heartfelt sympathy of all is extended.
     Mr. Marshall moved to what is now Jones County in the early days and this was the family home since then. He homesteaded in Kolls Township and was one of the most successful farmers in this part of the state. Mr. Marshall was quite a public spirited citizen and he was never too busy with private affairs to take an active interest in the public events of the day. He was a life-long member of the Democratic party and while he was but seldom found seeking office in his own interest, he was always ready to do his part in his party's interest and had served for a number of years as the Democratic county chairman in the county. He was the county chairman at the time of his death Tuesday morning.

Mrs Mabel Wolff (1890-1959)
                     Mrs. Mabel Wolff died last Thursday morning in the hospital in Mitchell after an illness of several months. Until her illness and death, Mrs. Wolff and her son, Virgil, livd on a farm north of Draper. Her Husband died several years ago.
     Mabel Ann Wanamaker was born Dec. 16, 1890 near Logan, Iowa. She moved with her parents to a farm south of White Lake in 1900. In this vicinity she grew to adulthood.
     On March 16, 1910 she was united in marriage to William Wolff of rural Platte. They resided in or near Platte until they moved to Draper in 1944.
     She passed away at the Mitchell Hospital in Mitchell on Cot 29 after a lingering illness. At the time of her death she was 68 years, ten months old. She was preceded in death by her husband, two daughters and one son.
     She leaves to mourn her death three son, Virgil of Draper, Meril of Murdo, and Raymond of Huron. Two daughters, Mrs. Frank Marshall of Draper and Mrs. Thurman Hullinger of Mitchell. She also had seven grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. George Gukeisen, of Mitchell and Mrs. Mary Krogman of Sioux Falls, two brothers Everette of Los Angeles and Ralph of Mitchell. Also many other relatives and a host of friends.
     Funeral services were held in Draper at the Methodist Church on Monday forenoon, and interment was in the cemetery at Platte, S.D.
