Armstrongs and Braswells at Family Tree Maker

My home page is called The John Melton Armstrong Home Page. Other names are Joyner, Merritt, Lanier, Sloan, Kiser, Braswell, Bracewell, Smith, Coleman, Wagner, Mayfield and Boyd. There is an InterneTree attached and 2 genealogy reports. Just got a ton of information about the Nancy Lanier Line! More information from Dr. Roy Bennett Braswell's book, "Following the Braswell's in America" third edition, after 1983, will be posted on both sites as soon as we can get it typed in the computer! Note: just got information thru GenForum, a direct cousin, her line through the son of my ggg-grandfather, Daniel Sloan. Our information ties the loop! Another cousin added!

Christopher S. Armstrong

I am interested in any Armstrongs in the Southern Middle Tennessee area. In particular, William and Allen Treble (unsure of the spelling of Allen) of the Franklin County Area. (posted 3/5/99)

Woodstock Paint Horses

My father's name is Arvid Armstrong, son of Edgar Armstrong, son of John Armstrong (from Canada). I love the creative and fun lovingness of the Armstrong Clan. My aunt has an Armstrong book to lend me so keep the names coming! What a wonderful group of people to be part of! We are lucky! Visit my site and see my family! :-) (posted 3/7/99)

Kevin Armstrong

I'm a descendant of Thomas Armstrong b. 1840 in New York or Canada. Tom was a farmer in Franklin Co., NY. His father was from Ireland, mother from NYS. He married Caroline Davis b. 1844. Her father was born in Maine, mother born in Ireland. Their children are George, Charles, Edward and Edith. (posted 3/8/99)

Cynthia's Homepage

Great to see a 'gathering place' for Armstrong researchers. My Armstrong search starts with JOHN ARMSTRONG, reportedly from Canada, either he or his father/gr-father were from Northern Ireland (no proof, only folklore). The family was METHODIST and were all in the building trades although many were also farmers. JOHN ARMSTRONG, b. 1783, d. 1879, initially is found in KNOX, ALBANY, NY where he is married to TAHPENES WILLIAMS, b. 1788, d. 1859. Right away we start with a mystery as some records show he also married ESTHER WILLIAMS. Depending on who did the research, Tahpenes had all of the children or Esther had some of the children. I've been to the cemetery and seen Tahpenes' grave which merely says 'Tahpenes'. It is in the ARMSTRONG family plot over which is a majestic round pillar of brown granite which towers over the cemetery located in Knox, Albany, NY. NO grave for Esther. My theory is that Esther and Tahpenes are one and the same.

Originally, I found records that showed TUHPENES which I thought could have been 'Two Pennies' perhaps an Indian name? Then she may have been converted to Christianity and received Esther as a Christian name. This would explain the confusion over the children and explain why she is among the missing in the cemetery!

Comments? Many of the Armstrongs are still in Albany and Schoharie Co to date, however, early on some groups migrated to western NYS to Orleans Co, where many are buried. Later some of them moved to IA, MI, OH, and parts west. While I would like to find out where my original JOHN ARMSTRONG came from, I'd very much like to touch base with other Armstrong descendants. The website is new, is my son's (I made it for him for a Christmas surprise!) but the Yankee page is the beginning of my ARMSTRONG line. It needs work - my 2000 resolution!

Happy searching everyone and a fruitful New Year.
