THE FAMILY OF DAVIS KING

 

            DAVIS (DAVID) KING, son of Elizabeth and Thomas King, was born ca. 1800 in Georgia (North Carolina).  He died 23 January 1861 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is buried in the Cemetery on the Old Stripling Farm near Melrose in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            He married ca. 1821-1833 Mary Nancy "Polly" Sartin, daughter of Nancy Ann and James Sartin of Franklin County, Tennessee.  Polly was born 11 February 1804 and died 18 April 1886 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She is buried in the King Cemetery on Kingtown Road near Woden in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Davis, his wife and first five children arrived in Texas in 1838; arriving in Sabine County at the home of Davis's sister Mrs. ___McGowen.  In 1839 they moved on to Nacogdoches County and settled in the Melrose Community.  In 1842 Mary Nancy "Polly" Sartin King inherited part of her father's estate and purchase land near Carrizo Creek and built a home on the bluff overlooking the creek.

            Davis was a merchant in the Melrose Community, a farmer, race horse owner.  He was the owner of the race horse John Green, which was sold at his death at auction on the Court House Lawn in Nacogdoches County, Texas, as was instructed in his will.

            Davis is found listed in the 1840 and 1849, Tax lists of Nacogdoches County, Texas; and on the 1846 Poll List of the same County.  He is listed on the 1847 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He held Headright #522; and his Old Certificate #351 was issues 31 December 1839 in Sabine County, Texas.  He was a devout Presbyterian.

            After Davis death Mary Nancy "Polly" Sartin King, remarried to Rev. Clemmons Means, the Presbyterian minister, on 18 (19?) December 1867 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  This marriage certificate on record in Nacogdoches County gives her name as Mrs. Nancy King.

            In the 1870 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas Davis has died and Mary Nancy "Polly" Sartin has remarried to Rev. Clemmon Means and all of her children have left home.  They are listed in the Census as seen below.

1. Madison Thompson King, was born 8 January 1822 in Linclon County,  Tennessee.  He died 4 September 1900 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas; and, he is buried in the King Cemetery just off the Woden Road in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He married Sarah Jane Haynes, daughter of Eleanor Hyder and James Patten Haynes, on 16 November 1848 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is listed in the 1845 and the 1849 Tax Lists; the 1846 Poll Lists, and the 1847 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Madison Thompson King held Headright # 495.  His Old Certificate #353 was issued 31 December 1839 in Sabine County, Texas.

 

2. Anderson Augustus King, born 1825 in Franklin County, Tennessee and died ca. 1864 during the Civil War in Louisiana.  He served in the Confederate States Army in Company A. 17th Regiment of the Texas Cavalry, until he was discharged on 8 June 1862 in Little Rock, Arkansas and returned home.  He re-enlisted as 1st Lieutenant in Company C. of the Texas Cavalry on 26 January 1863.  He married Elizabeth Polina O. Yarbrough on 24 May 1855 in Nacogdoches County, Texas. Anderson is found in the 1847 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas; and, he is also listed in the 1849 Tax List of the same County.  He emigrated to Texas in the Winter of 1839 as a single man and held Headright #127.

 

3. Hannah "Anna" Caroline King, was  born  13 May 1830 in Tennessee,  died 30 October 1902, married 1st Henry S. McClure on 22 February 1849 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, 2nd. James M. Weedin, Sr. in Nacogdoches County, Texas. 

 

2. Mary Adaline King, born 26 June 1831 in Tennessee and died 15 June 1886 in Nacogdoches County, Texas; married Michael Hyder Haynes, son of Eleanor Hyder and James Patton Haynes.

 

4. Helen "Ellen" Emeline King, was born  14  March 1838 in South Carolina and died 31 December 1928, married Samuel William Reid, son of Mary and John Reid, on 21 December 1853 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

6. Rufus Putnam King, was born 28 October 1840 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and  died 3 December 1904, married Amanda J. Yarbrough on 20 September 1866 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

7. Richard Jefferson King, born 30  April 1843 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and died 22 February 1910 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and is buried in the Jacob's Chapel Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He married Martha Perneice Alders, daughter of Lucy Jacobs and Thomas Alders, on 19 December 1867 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He served in the Confederate States Army in Company A., 17th Cavalry and in the Texas Dismounted Cavalry

 

8.  General Houston G. King, was  born  22 January 1849 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and died 31 December 1932 in Nacogdoches County, Texas; and, is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas; married 1st. Mary Camille Jacobs; 2nd. Selma Emstrom.

            MADISON "MATT" THOMPSON KING, son of Mary "Polly" Sartin and Davis (David) King, was born 8 January 1822 in Linclon County, Tennessee.  He died 4 September 1900 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas; and, he is buried in the King Cemetery just off the Woden Road in Nacogdoches County, Texas. 

            He married Sarah Jane Haynes, daughter of Eleanor Hyder and James Patten Haynes, on 16 November 1848 in Nacogdoches County, Texas. 

            Madison had been raised a Presbyterian but, after his marriage to Sarah he joined the Methodist Church in Melrose when Sarah had gone to Church most of her life.  They remained members there until the church was disbanded.  At this time, 27 August 1876, they became members of the Simpson's Campground Church in Woden.

            Sarah Jane Haynes King was born 23 August 1828 and died 27 April 1900 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She is also buried in the King Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Her obituary in The Daily Sentinel was reprinted in "Rest in Peace, Nacogdoches Obituaries 1899-1904" by Carylon Reeves Ericson, as can be seen below.

 

            In memory of Mrs. Sarah Jane King, born in East Tennessee in 1828, came to Texas with her parents as a little girl.  At the age of 17 she was converted and joined the M. E. church of the South.  On November 16, 1848 she married Mat T. King.  Their union was blessed with ten children, six of whom survive her.  She died April 27, 1900 and her last words to those who ministered to her were, "put all your trust in Jesus."  In the cemetery near her home we laid her to rest in the presence of a large concourse of mourning friends and relatives. {Sarah Jane Haynes King, born 25 August 1828, died 27 April 1900, buried King Cemetery] "We miss thee from thy home dear,

            When Matt, as he was called, married his Father, David King, gave him and his new wife 75 acres of land on what was at that time called the Driver Road; toady this County road is known as the Kingtown Road.  It is located off the Woden Road in Nacogdoches County.

During the Civil War, Madison was a member of the Confederates States Army Quartermaster's Corp.  He was in charge of collecting supplies for the Army stationed in Louisiana.  He also served in Company B., and Company C., of the  3rd Brigade of the Texas State Troops.  He received Confederate Pension # 04829.

            After the war was over he evaded the Union Occupation Soldiers while taking supplies to a local man who had taken to the Angelina River Bottom in hiding after he had killed a Union Soldier.  Madison continued to supply this man until after the Union Soldiers left Nacogdoches County.

            Madison  is listed in the 1845 and the 1849 Tax Lists; the 1846 Poll Lists, and the 1847 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Madison Thompson King held Headright # 495.  His Old Certificate #353 was issued 31 December 1839 in Sabine County, Texas.

            Sarah Jane is listed in the 1861 and 1862 Tax Lists of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

2. Thomas Davis King,  born  15  December  1851  in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas, died in September 1927 in Randolph County, Arkansas and is buried in the Shiloh Cemetery in Randolph County, Arkansas.  He married Malinda Hannah L. Clark on 17 March 1875 (Nacogdoches County, Texas?).  He is listed in the 1860 and 1870 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas and on the 1870 Muster Roll of Nacogdoches County.

 

3.  Minerva Eleanor King,  born 11 October 1855 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas; died 10 April 1917; married James Jones Moore, son of Elizabeth B. White and Asa Moore, on 22 October 1874 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

4. Madison Henry King, (twin), was  born  12  December  1856 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas; died 23 August 1867 at age 8 Months; believe buried in the King Family Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

5. Anderson Augustus King, III, (twin) born 12 December 1856 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas, died 17 March 1920 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and is buried in the King Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He married Martha Jeffanna "Ann" Jacobs, daughter of Sarah E. Fewell and Claiborne Jacobs.  Martha was born 17 July 1861 and died 15 December 1950 and is also buried in the King Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

6. Mary Carolina King, was  born  24 August 1859 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas, died 12 December 1865.

 

7. Michael Jefferson "Jeff" King, was  born  3 December 1861 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 22 May 1923 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is buried in the King Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He married 3 February 1882 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Mary Elizabeth Jacobs, daughter of Sarah Elizabeth Fewell and Claiborn Jacobs, was born 23 October 1859 and died 8 October 1924 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

8. James Monroe "Mon" King, was  born  2  January 1864 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas, died 13 November 1936 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is buried in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Woden, Texas.  He  married 1st. Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Jacobs on 25 December 1887; and 2nd. Lucy Elizabeth Alders, daughter of Elizabeth A. Skillern and William M. Alders, on 13 December 1893 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

9. Elizabeth King, born 20 October  1866 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas; born 22 October 1866 and is believed buried in the King Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

10.  Madison Taylor King, born 11 February 1871 in  Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas, died 26 August 1881.

            ANDERSON AUGUSTUS KING, son of Mary "Polly" Sartin and Davis (David) King, was  born ca. 1825 in Franklin County, Tennessee and  died ca. 1864 during the Civil War in Louisiana.

            He served in the Confederate States Army.  He enlisted as a 3rd Sgt. on 1 February 1962  in Capt. Seborn M. Noble's Company A., 17th Regiment of the Texas Cavalry, until he was discharged on 8 June 1862 in Little Rock, Arkansas and returned home.  He re-enlisted as 1st Lieutenant in Capt. E. N. Eubanks's Company C., of the Texas Cavalry on 26 January 1863 and served until his death in Louisiana in 1864.

            Anderson married Elizabeth Polina O. Yarbrough on 24 May 1855 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Elizabeth Polina O. Yarbrough, daughter of Sarah White and Asa Yarbrough, was born 30 June 1838 in Shelby County, Texas.

            Anderson is found in the 1847 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas; and, he is also listed in the 1849 Tax List of the same County.  He emigrated to Texas in the Winter of 1839 as a single man and held Headright #127.

            Elizabeth Polina O. Yarbrough King remarried after Anderson's death to Stephen M. Day, son of Mary Hobbs and Stephen M. Day, Sr., on 27 February 1865 in San Augustine County, Texas. She died soon afterward; before 1870.

Rufus William King, born 22 April 1863 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 3 December 1942 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is buried in the Simpson's Campground in Woden, Texas.  He married Nancy "Nannie" Jane Oliver, daughter of Louisiana Beaman and Merida Crumble Oliver,  on 20 December 1891 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Nannie was born 26  October 1873 and died 21 February 1933, and is buried in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Woden, Texas.

            HANNAH "ANNA" CAROLINE KING, daughter of Mary "Polly" Sartin and Davis (David) King,  was  born  13 May 1830 in Franklin County, Tennessee, and died 30 October 1902 in Hollis, Oklahoma and is buried there in the Fairmont Cemetery.

            She married 1st Henry Smith McClure on 16 February 1849 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  At the time of the marriage David King, father of the bride, gave the couple land on the Old Driver Road, which is now known as the Kingtown Road, in the Woden Community of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  The couple built their home on the property and it was here that all of their children were born. 

            On 13 May 1861, Henry enlisted in the Confederate States Army in the 17th Regiment Company A of the Texas Cavalry.  He was discharged in Little Rock Arkansas, "because of age" on 17 July 1862.  He re-enlisted and also served in James R. Arnold's Company B., 3rd Brigade of the Texas States Troops; he died in the service.

            Henry Smith McClure, son of Amy Ann Ogilvie and Houston McClure, was born 14 December 1826 in Williamson County, Tennessee.  He died on 9 February 1865 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, during the Civil War, while in the Confederate States Army.  He is buried in the King Family Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            And, she married 2nd. James M. Weedin, Sr., on 15 March 1871 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.   He took Hannah and all but the oldest child and moved to Hollis, Oklahoma to live.  James M. Weedin, Sr. was born ca. 1826 in Tennessee.  He served in the Confederate States Army in Company A., 17th Texas Cavalry. 

            James M. Weedin can be located in the 1867 Voters Registration of Nacogdoches County, Texas were he stated her had been a resident of the County for 21 years.  He is also listed in the 1846 Poll List; the 1854 and 1857 School Census; and the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

James Madison McClure, born 4 June 1850 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas and died 6 November 1934 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He married Sarah Frances Yarbrough, daughter of Frances and Asa Yarbrough.  When his Mother and family went to Oklahoma, he stayed on the home-place and lived there all his life.

 

2. Harriet A. McClure, born 19 February 1852 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas and died 20 March 1939 in Oklahoma and is buried in Hollis, Oklahoma.  She and married James Henry Hobbs, son of Caroline Brown and Eli Holley Hobbs, on 9 December 1868 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

3. Mary A. McClure, born 17 December 1856 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She died and was buried in Hollis, Oklahoma. She married Jim Carter.

 

4. William A. McClure, born ca. 1856 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

5. Houston Davis McClure, born 12 November 1858 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas, died in February 1907 and he died and was buried in Hollis, Oklahoma.   He married Willow Frances Gresham.

 

6. John Henry McClure, born 22 May 1861 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He died 3 May 1928 in Hollis, Oklahoma and was buried in the Fairmont Cemetery in Hollis, Oklahoma. John married 1st Ollie Mae Cash, 2nd Ruth ______.

 

7. Richard McClure, born 29 May 1863 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas; and, he died 12 February 1938 and is buried in Wellington, Collingsworth County, Texas.  He married Indiana Anderson.

            MARY ADALINE KING, daughter of Mary "Polly" Sartin and Davis (David) King, was 26 June 1831 in Tennessee and died 15 June 1886 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            She married Michael Hyder Haynes, son of Eleanor Hyder and James Patton Haynes, on 9 (13?) September 1848 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Michael Hyder Haynes, was born 25 July 1821 in Carter County, Tennessee and died 1864 during the Civil War.  His place of burial is no known.

            Michael enlisted in the Confederate States Army in Palestine, Texas on 25 August 1863 in Company E., 37th Texas Cavalry and was last reported as "ill February 21, 1864".

5. Robert Lee Haynes, born  21 June 1863 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 7 January 1929 in Pocahontas, Arkansas.  He is buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Randolph County, Arkansas.  Robert married Margaret Sloan Hufstedler on 6 June 1880.

 

6. Landon  Christopher  Haynes,  born 26 December 1865 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 9 November 1956 in Pocahontas, Arkansas.  He is buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Randolph County, Arkansas.  Landon married Elmyra Virgina Knotts on 9 January 1895.

            HELEN "ELLEN" EMELINE KING, daughter of Mary "Polly" Sartin and Davis (David) King, was born  14  March 1838 in South Carolina died 31 December 1928.

            She married Samuel William Reid, son of Mary and John Reid, on 21 (30) December 1853 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Samuel William Reid was born 12 July 1827 in Georgia and died 29 December 1923 and is buried in the Shady Grove Cemetery in Shady Grove, Nacogdoches County, Texas. He came to Texas in 1836 and is listed on the 1857 Tax List; the 1863 Relief List; and, the 1870 Muster Roll of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            RUFUS PUTNAM KING, son of Mary "Polly" Sartin and Davis (David) King, was born 28 October 1840 in Melrose, Nacogdoches County, Texas and according to his tombstone, he died 3 December 1904 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Another date is also give for his death as 15 May 1917.  He is buried in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Woden, Texas.  (His death Certificate gives his date of death as 7 December 1904.)

            He married Amanda J. Yarbrough, daughter of Sarah White and Asa Yarbrough, on 20 September 1866 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Amanda was born 22 October 1847 in the Pisgah Community, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She died 16 December 1904 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and is buried in Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            He served in the Confederate States Army enlisting 1 February 1862 in Capt. Seborn M. Nobel's Company A., 17th Regiment of the Texas Cavalry and later on during the war in the 17th Consolidated Regiment Dismounted Cavalry; and the 4th Brigade Texas Militia.  He served until the end of the Civil War.  Rufus was also listed on the 1870 Muster Roll of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He received Confederate Pension # 11258.

            Rufus is located in the 1867 Voters Registration of Nacogdoches County, Texas in which he stated that he had been in Nacogdoches County for 26 years.  And, he is listed in the 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County.

Anderson was Rufus's brother who was died during the Civil War in the Confederate Army.  Their Mother remarried to Stephen M. Day, son of Mary Hobbs and Stephen M. Day, Sr.,  but she died soon afterward.

Thomas Eli Chisum, was born 20 November 1869 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He died 4 February 1944 and is buried in Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

3. Alice Carrie King, born 22 January 1873 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 13 July 1964 and is buried in the Simpson's Campground in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She married William Henry Chisum, son of Laura Ferrell and Andrew Jackson Chisum, on 24 December 1891 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Henry was born 19 February 1871 and died 22 December 1923 and is buried in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Woden, Texas.

 

4. David Houston King, "High Pockets", was born 10 August 1875 in Woden Community,  Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 1 February 1960, and is buried in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He married Ethel Chisum on 19 December 1900 in Nacogdoches County, Texas. Ethel was the daughter of Laura Ferrel Little and Andrew Jackson Chisum.

6. Eugenia Mae King, born 1 May 1881 in Nacogdoches County, Texas,

 

died 1950 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.             RICHARD JEFFERSON "RICH" KING, son of Mary "Polly" Sartin and Davis (David) King, was born 30  April 1843 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and died 22 February 1910 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is buried in the Jacob's Chapel Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He was a Methodist.

            He married Martha Perneice Alders, daughter of Lucy Jacobs and Thomas Alders,  on 19 December 1867 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Richard enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 1 February 1982 into Company A., 17th Texas Cavalry, and served until the end of the War.  It was said that when he came home at the end of the war that he was in such a state that his own Mother did not recognize him.

Richard also served in the Texas Dismounted Cavalry, and was in the Battle of Arkansas on 11 January 1863.

            Perneice was born 16 March 1843 and died 15 May 1917 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and is buried in the Jacob's Chapel Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She received Confederate Pension # 19159 and Confederate Mortuary Warrant #112.

            Martha and Richard had no children.

            He is listed on the  1861 and 1862 Tax Lists of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  In the 1867 Voters Registration of Nacogdoches County, Texas he stated that he had been in the County for 24 years.

            GENERAL HOUSTON G. KING, son of Mary "Polly" Sartin and Davis (David) King, was  born  22 January 1849 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and died 31 December 1932 in Nacogdoches, Texas.  He is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas.

            First he married 1st. Mary Camille Jacobs on 29 April 1869 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Mary Camilla Jacobs, daughter of Mary Chisum and James Jacobs, was born 18 February 1948 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            His second marriage was on 24 February 1906 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Selma Enstrom. 

            Selma was born 20 May 1852 and died 4 March 1964 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and is buried beside General Houston King in Oak Grove Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas. 

            Mrs. Selma Enstrom King Holcomb received Confederate Pension # 52038 and Confederate Mortuary Warrant # 770644.  And, Selma entered the Confederate Veterans and Widows Home in Austin, Texas on 20 January 1960.

            Selma Enstrom remarried after General Houston King's death to A. B. Holcomb, who died March 1948. 

            He is found in the 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  General Houston King was a Methodist and the Postmaster at Thors from 1886 to 1890.

            General Houston King served in the Confederate States Army in Company A., 17th Dismounted Cavalry for 4 month; and, in Terry's Texas Rangers the 8th Texas Cavalry.  He was discharged on 18 April 1865 in Richmond, Texas.  He is also listed on the 1870 Muster Roll of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            General received Confederate Pension # 50669.  In his later years he lived in the Confederate Home for Veterans and Widows in Austin, Texas.

            ANDERSON AUGUSTUS KING, III, son of Sarah Jane Haynes and Madison "Matt" Thompson King, was born 12 December 1856 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas, died 17 March 1920 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and is buried in the King Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Anderson was a twin to Madison Henry King, who died at about 8 months of age.

            He married Martha Jeffanna "Ann" Jacobs, daughter of Sarah E. Fewell and Claiborne Jacobs, on 23 July 1882 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Martha was the sister of Mary Elizabeth Jacobs, who had married Andy's brother, Michael Jefferson "Jeff" King, just a few months before.  This made the children of these two couples their own double first cousins.

            Martha Jeffanna Jacobs, daughter of Sarah E. Fewell and Claiborne Jacobs, was born 17 July 1861 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and died 15 December 1950 and is buried in King Cemetery in the Woden Area of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Anderson is located in the 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas living with his cousin, Ida Olivia Coats (daughter of Harriet Burrows and Daniel H. Coast) and James Buchanan as seen below.

William Cleo King, born 19 December 1889 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, died 13 June 1952 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is buried in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas.  He married 17 August 1913 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Lena Louise Strahan, daughter of Louisa Newman and Benson Mott Strahan.  Lena was born 25 July 1893 and died 22 January 1969; and, is buried in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery beside her husband.

 

5. Marvin  Clyde "Jack" King, was  born  31 August 1891 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 9 April 1935 and is buried in the King Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He never married.

            MICHAEL JEFFERSON "JEFF" KING, son of Sarah Jane Haynes and Madison "Matt" Thompson King, was  born  3 December 1861 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 22 May 1923 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is buried in the King Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Jeff was born club footed in both feet but continued on in life becoming a traveling merchant.  He went to the outlying communities in Nacogdoches County caring goods and supplies, until her bought the store in Woden from his Uncle Richard Jefferson King.

            He married 3 February 1882 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Mary Elizabeth Jacobs, daughter of Sarah Elizabeth Fewell and Claiborn Jacobs.

            Mary, was the sister of Martha Jeffana "Ann" Jacobs, who had married Jeff's brother, Anderson Augustus "Andy" King, just a few months after their marriage.  This made the children of these two couples their own double first cousins.

            Mary Elizabeth Jacobs, daughter of Sarah E. Fewell and Claiborne Jacobs, was born 23 October 1859 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and died 8 October 1924, she is buried in King Family Cemetery just outside of Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas. 

            Jeff was a member of Woodmen of the World and helped build a Woodmen Hall in the Woden Community.

            He and his wife are both buried in the King Cemetery on the Kingtown Road in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            He married Sarah Frances Yarbrough, daughter of Sarah White and Asa Yarbrough, on 14 December 1869 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Sarah was born 8 January 1851 in Nacogdoches County, Texas,  and died 11 May 1928 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and is buried beside her husband in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Woden, Texas.

            When his Mother and family went to Oklahoma, he stayed on the home-place and lived there all his life.  He is listed in the 1870 Muster Roll of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            She married 31 December 1890 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Mr. Thomas Eli Chisum, son of Laura Farrell and Andrew Jackson Chisum.

            Thomas Eli Chisum, was born 20 November 1869 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He died 4 February 1944 and is buried in Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            She married William Henry Chisum, son of Laura Ferrell and Andrew Jackson Chisum, on 24 December 1891 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Henry was born 19 February 1871 and died 22 December 1923 and is buried in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Woden, Texas.

            This family is found listed in the 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

DAVIS HOUSTON KING, "High Pockets", son of Amanda Yarbrough and Rufus Putnam King,  was born 10 August 1875 in Woden Community,  Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He died 1 February 1960 in Nacogdoches County, Texas; and, is buried in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Woden, Texas.

            He married Ethel Chisum on 19 December 1900 in Nacogdoches County, Texas. Ethel was the daughter of Laura Ferrel Little and Andrew Jackson Chisum.  She was born 2 December 1881 and died 27 January 1967 and is buried in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            He is listed in the Early Birth Records of Nacogdoches County, and in the 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County.

            Ethel had a unmarried sister, Martha Ida Chisum who lived with them until her death in  27 November 1950.

            After Davis' death Ethel went to live with her son Willie Ford King until her death  on 27 January 1967 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Both Davis and Ethel are buried side by side in the Simpson Campground Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Emanuel Holley Hobbs was born 24 January 1874 and died 14 November 1940 in Nacogdoches, Texas; and, is also buried in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery.

            James M. "Jim" Pike, was born ca. 1847 and died 5 September 1919 an is probably buried in the Melrose Methodist Cemetery in Melrose, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Gracie Stalling and James M. Pike had children Julia Pike, born ca. 1878; Robert Hugh Pike; Jim Pike; and Mae Pike.

            He married 17 August 1913 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Lena Louise Strahan, daughter of Louisa Newman and Benson Mott Strahan.  Lena was born 25 July 1893 and died 22 January 1969; and, is buried in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery beside her husband.

            EMORY T. "RUNT" KING,  son of Martha Jeffana "Ann" Jacobs and Anderson Augustus King, III, a  twin,  was  born  10  October  1901  in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He died 28 February 1991 in Nacogdoches, Texas and was buried in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas. 

            He  married on 1 January 1927 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Miss Ima Mae Alders, daughter of Romilda Parrish and Arthur C. Alders.

            Ima Mae Alders King was born 20 September 1909 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and she died 21 December 1985 in Nacogdoches, Texas.  She was buried in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas.  He obituary appeared in The Daily Sentinel as appears below.

            Funeral for Mrs. Ima Mae King, 76, of 6232 East Main was held Monday at 1 p.m. in Cason monk Chapel with internment in Sunset Memorial Park.

            Officiatin were Rev. Ennis Fuller, pastor of Eastside Pentecostal Church, and Rev. Richard McLain.

            Mrs. King died Saturday, December 21, in Memorial Hospital.

            Born September 20, 1909, in Nacogdoches County, she was the daughter of Arthur C. and Romilda Parrish Alders.  She was retired from The Candy House, lived her lifetime in the county, and foe several years was a member of Eastside Pentostal Church.

            Mrs. King and Emory T. King were married January 1, 1927, and he survuves her.

            Also surviving are two sons, Arnold King and Glynn King of Nacogdoches; one grandchild; and three great grandchildren.

            A brother, Weldon Joe Alders, preceded her in death.

            Pallbearers were Gean Sargent, Richard Waggoner, Nolan Alders Sr., Weldon Alders Jr., Floyd Tillis Jr., Gilbert Garrett, E. W. Roark Sr., and Nathan Alders Jr.  Honorary pallbearers were Byford Pike, Pete Smith, Donald Alexander, Marcus Hairgrove, and Bobby Jack King.

            Born October 10, 1901, in Woden, he was the son of Anderson A. and Anna Jacobs King.  He was retired logging contractor and service station owner, a lifetine resident of Nacogdoches County and a Methodist.

            He and Ima Alders were married, and she died in 1895.

            Surviving are sons, Arnold King and Glynn King of Nacogdoches; sister Mrs. Emma Dupree of West Monroe, La.; one grandchild; and three great grandchildren.

            Pallbearers will be Glenn Allen Sargent, Floyd Tills Jr., Nathan Alders, Nolan Alders, Bobby King, Gilbert Garrett, W. W. (Buddy) Alders and Paul H. (Pete) Smith.

            JAMES AUGUSTUS KING, son of Mary Elizabeth Jacobs and Michael Jefferson "Jeff" King, was born 21 February 1883 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 11 November 1952 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is buried in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas. 

            He  married Minnie Z. Crecelius, daughter of Nancy Caroline Adams and Lloyd Dee Crecelius, on 7 August 1910 in Melrose, Nacogdoches County, Texas, by Rev. John W. Wilson.

            Minnie was born 24 June 1895 in Polk County, Texas; and, she died 20 December 1963 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She was buried in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery beside her husband. 

            Minnie's brothers and sisters consisted of; a brother Albert Jesse Crecelius, who died at age 11; a sister Vida Dee Crecelius; and a sister Bessie Mae Crecelius.

3. Jessie Mae "Boe" King, born 3 June 1915 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 23 November 1974 in California.  She is buried in Comptonville, California.  Jessie Mae married 13 November 1938 to John David "J.D." Park, Jr.  Jessie married 2nd. Thomas Waracka.

 

4. Gussie "Dee" King, born 8 June 1917 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 19 April 1971 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She is buried in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She married Lawrence "Larry" R. Smallwood on 22 December 1937.

 

5. Dorothy King, born 29 December 1925 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She married Billy Wayne Jacobs on 10 March 1945 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Ed married Flossie Belle "Mae" Morton, daughter of Lera "Lee" Abel Dixon and Jehu Hugh Morton, on 9 October 1916 in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County, Texas by Judge J. F. Perritte.

            Mae was born 28 August 1897 in Chireno, Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 12 November 1981 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She is buried beside her husband in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas.

            Beulah Bell Edwards was born 18 September 1894 in Ruston, Lousiana and died 15 April 1984 in Pasadena, Texas.  She is buried in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas.

            Funeral for Mrs. Beulah Belle King, of Pasadena will be held at 2 p.m. in the Cason Monk Chapel with internment in the Sunset Memorial Park.

            Mrs. King died Friday, April 15, in Southmore Hospital in Pasadena.

            Born September 18, 1894, in Ruston, La., she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Edwards.  She was the widow of Rho King to whom she married in 1901.  She was a Methodist and a member of the Woodmen of the World Circle, and she had lived in Pasadena four years.

            Surviving are two sons, C. C. King of Conroe and H. L. King of Odessa; a daughter Mrs. Helen Tillison of Pasadena; a brother, H. L. Edwards of Nacogdoches; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

            Pallbearers will be Arnold King, Tommie King, E. T. Culp, Ed King Jr., Pete Smith, Ed King, and L. J. King.

            CARRIE LOU KING, daughter of Mary Elizabeth Jacobs and Michael Jefferson "Jeff" King, was born 15 January 1896 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She died 23 March 1977 in Nacogdoches, Texas.

            She married Charles "Charlie" Lafayette Bousman on 22 February 1914 in Melrose, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Charlie was the son of Cyrena Jane Kimmel and John Calvin Bousman.  He was born 23 June 1891 in Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas and died 12 January 1926.  He was buried in Burkburnett, Texas.  Charlie was a member of the Swift Masonic Lodge and the Swift Church of Christ.

            He married Ora Dell Wagstaff (his foster-sister), foster-daughter of Mary Elizabeth Jacobs and Michael Jefferson "Jeff" King,  on 20 November 1923.

            Ora Dell Wagstaff was born ca. 1897 and she died 8 May 1990 in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas.  She had a brother Houston J. Wagstaff.

            Funeral for Ora Dell King, 83, of Dallas will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in First United Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Thomas L. Foster and the Rev. Pate officiating.

            Graveside services will be held at 5 p.m. in Woden Cemetery in Nacogdoches County with the Rev. Glen Morton officiating and interment following.

            Mrs. King died Tuesday, May 8, 1900, in Dallas.

            Surviving are two sons, James J. and Tommy A. King; tow daughters, Joyce and Sue Garner; a brother, Houston J. Wagstaff; 12 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

            Funeral for Earl King, 85, of Route 2, Box 2070, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Cason Monk Chapel, Mound Street, with interment in Simpson's Campground cemetery.

            Officiating will be Rev. Steve Scott, pastor of Simpson's Campground Methodist Church, and Rev. Billie Thomas, pastor of Bonit Methodist Church.

            Mr. King died Monday, March 30, in Medical Ceneter Hospital,

            Born July 7 1901 in Nacogdoches County, he was the son of Rufus W. and Nanny J. Oliver.  He was a farmer, a Methodist, and a lifetime resident of the county.

            Surviving are his wife, Rosie Knox King of Nacogdoches; two sons Dwight King of Dallas and Rayburn King of Nacogdoches; a sister Pearl Jacobs of Woden; ten grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

            Pallbearers will be Mancil Wallace, Glenn Hill, Homer Perkins, Tim Skillern, Bobby J. Anderson, and Merdith Oliver.

            Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

            George was born 23 October 1903 in Smyrna, Nacogdoches County, Texas and died 18 July 1981 of Leukemia in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Nacogdoches County.

            She never married and was the librian at Nacogdoches High School for many years.

            Funeral for Miss Eddie Mae King, 63, of 110 Nottingham will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery.

            Miss King died Tuesday March 8, in Medical Center Hospital.

            Born May 25, 1924, in Woden, she was the daughter of Ed King Sr. and Mae Morton King.  She was a school teacher for 42 years, retiring in May, 1987, after 20 years a librarian at Nacogdoches High School.  She lived he lifetime in the county and was a member of New Hope Congretional Methodist Church where she taught the Young Married Adult Class.  She was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the Retired Teachers Associanation, the Nagocdoches Genealogical Society, and Delta Kappa Gamma.

            Surviving are a brother, Ed King of New Caney, and two sisters, Mrs. E. E. (Marylee) Schoot and Mrs. Pete (Jacqueline) Smith of Nacogdoches.

            Pallbearers, will be Arnie Olsen, Buck Smelley, Sam Cain, Bernard Livingston, Jimmy Lee, Gary Muckleroy, Glen McVay, and Dwight Phillips.

            Memorial may be gifts to a favorite charity.

            KURTH PENNINGTON BOUSMAN, son of Carrie Lou King and Charles Lafayette Bousman, was  born 20 September 1920 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and died 21 February 1984.

            He married 5 March 1948 to Peggy White of Gustine, Texas. 

            He was a Lt. in the Air Transport Command in the European Theater during World War II.

            NELSON MADISON KING, Jr., son of Ora Dell Wagstaff and Nelson Madison King, was born  8 June 1924 in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 31 Ocotber 1986 in Pasadena, Texas.  He is buried in the Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston, Harris County, Texas.  Nelson married Sybil _______.

            Funeral for Nelson M. King, Jr., 62, of Pasadena will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Pasadena Funeral Chapel with internment in Forest Park Lawndale, Houston.

            Officiating will be Rev. Roland Hill, pastor First Baptist Church in Pasadena.

            Mr. King died Friday, October 31, at his home.

            Born June 8, 1924 in Woden, he was retired as operations supervisor for Shell Oil Company in Deer Park, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of First Baptist Church of Pasadena.

            Surviving are his wife, Sybil King of Pasadena; a son Mark King of Lake Jackson and Tommy King of Nacogdoches; two sisters, Sue Garner and Joyce Garner of Dallas; and his mother Ora Dell King of woden.

            Graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 521 Memorial Team.

            Pasadena Funeral Chapel will be in charge of arrangements.

            He worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for 28 years as a engeineer.  He owned a store near the Kingtown Road. 

            He married 1st LaRue ___________.  She married 2nd ____Davis, 3rd. ____Turner.

            Elvin married 2nd.__________, divorced.

            Funeral for Elvin King, 58, of Route 2, Box 2040, will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Cason Monk Chapel with internment in Simpson's Campground Cemetery.

            Officiating will be the Rev. Emmitt UpChurch, Baptist minister of Woden, and the Rev. Home Polk, pastor of the Cushing Methodist Church.

            Mr. King die Tuesday, January 1, (1985) in Memorial Hospital.

            Born July 7, 1926 in Nacogdoches County, he was the son of Earl and Rosie Knox King.  He was a retired engineet with Southern Pacific Railroad, a veteran of the Korean Conflict, and a Baptist.

            Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl King of Nacogdoches; a son Richard Elvin King of Houston; two daughters, Carol Anne Favro and Kaye King Buford; two brothers, E. D. King of Dallas and Raybon Earl King of Woden; and five grandchildren.

            Pallbearers will be F. M. Hughes, Glenn Hill, Tim Skillern, Charlie Matlock, Giles Lowery, and Robert Arriola.

            Cason Monk Funeral Directors will be in charge of arrangements.

            Funeral for Elvin King, 58, of Route 2, Box 2040, was held Thursday in the Cason Monk Chapel followed by burial in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery.

King, born 1 August 1946 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Married ______________, divorced.  Richard became distraught over his father leaving everything to his sister Sheryl Kay King Scott and her husband, Billy Mason Scott.  He broke into his sisters house and killed her and her husband in their sleep and then drove to Lufkin where he killed his girlfriend, Denise Rae Fencl, 24, on 14 February 1989.

 

2. Carole Ann King, born 12 October 1948 in Liberty, Texas. She married Terry Favro on 26 May 1967.

 

3. Sheryl Kay King, born 30 March 1951 in Liberty, Texas.  She and her husband Billy Mason Scott were murdered by her brother Richard E. King on 14 February 1889 at their home on the Woden Road in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  They both were buried in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She married Billy Mason Scott, son of Rhoda Dove and William Thomas Scott.

            GEORGE EVERETT GRIMES, son of Lennie Marie Hobbs and George Jefferson "Jeff" Grimes, was born 29 November 1932 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He died 20 April 1988 in North Place Nursing Home in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He married Geri Long on 19 December 1953.

            Funeral for George Everette Grimes, 55 of Route 2, Box 2760, will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. in Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel with interment in Sunset Memorial Park.

            Officiating will be Rev. Steve Scott, pastor of Simpson Campground Methodist Church.

            Mr. Grimes died Wednesday, April 20, in North Place Nursing Center at 227 Russell Boulevard.

            Born November 29, 1932, in Nacogdoches County, he was the son of Jeff and Lennie Hobbs Grimes.  He was a rancher, and for more than 15 years was pressman for the Daily Sentinel, assisting in Photography and other departments for the newspaper.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1954 to 1957.  He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church and a Gospel soloist.

            Mr. Grimes and Geri Long were married December 19, 1953, and she survives him.

            Also Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Lennie Grimes of Nacogdoches; a mother-in-law, Mrs. Lola Long of Lufkin; a son George Perry Grimes, a daughter-in-law, Kim Grimes, of Nacogdoches; a daughter Holly Beall, and a son-in-law, James Beall, of Longview; and four grandchildren, Lauren Grimes, Levi Grimes, Amanda Beall, and Lindsey Beall.

            Pallbearers will be Floyd Long, Johnny Long, Ford King, James Johnston, Steve Lee, Dale Haines, Dan Simmons, Kelly Simmons, Tom Franks, Carl Franks, and Bud Williams.  Honorary pallbearers will be Kyle Simmons, Coleman Simmons, McNeil Grimes, Mancel Wallace, Cletus Harvey, and Clarence English.

            Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors will be in charge of arrangements.

MURDER WEAPON--A shotgun believed to have been used in the Tuesday slayings of a Lufkin woman ans a Nacogdoches County couple was recovered from the Lufkin Police Department Wednesday by the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Department.  Pictured is sheriff's deputy Dwight Lively, an investigator on the case.  Richard King, 42, Wednesday was charged with murder in connection with the shooting death in Lufkin of his former girlfriend, Denise Rae Fencl, 24, following the shooting that also claimed the lives of his sister, Kay Buford Scott, 38, and her husband, Bill Scott, 42, of Woden.  Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Department officers were hoping to interview the murder suspect today, Thursday, at a Lufkin hospital where he remains in critical condition.  After allegedly shooting Ms. Fencl early Tuesday morning, Mr. King shot himself in the stomach with the gun.  The bodies of the Woden couple were discovered Tuesday night in their home.

            SHERYL KAY KING,  daughter of LaRue ________ and Elvin King, was born 30 March 1951 in Liberty, Texas. 

            She and her husband Billy Mason Scott were murdered by her brother Richard E. King on 14 February 1889 at their home on the Woden Road in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  They both were buried in the Simpson's Campground Cemetery in Woden, Nacogdoches County, Texas. 

            She married 1st ______Buford.

            She married Billy Mason Scott, son of Rhoda Dove and William Thomas Scott, who was born 14 February 1946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi. 

            Richard E. King, also shot and killed his girlfriend, Denise Rae Fencl, 24, of Lufkin and then shot himself in the stomach.  He recovered from the self-inflicted gunshot wound and pleaded "not guilty by reason of insanity"; he was sent to Rusk State Mental Hospital for observation.

            Funeral for Mrs. Sheryl Kay Buford Scott, 37, and Billy Mason Scott, 43, of Route 2, Box 2040, was held Thursday at 3 p.m. in Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel with interment in Simpson's Campground Cemetery.

            Officiating was Rev. Steve Scott, pastor of Simpson Campground Methodist Church.

            Mr. and Mrs. Scott died Tuesday, February 14, 1989, at their home.

            They were poultry farmers and attended Simpson's Campground Methodist Church.

            Born 30 March, 1951, in Liberty, Mrs. Scott had lived in Nacogdoches County the last four years, previously living in Houston.

            She is survived by her Mother Mrs. LaRue Turner of Elking Lake; grandmother, Mrs. Rosie King of Woden; three brothers, Richard King of Woden, Glen Davis of Austin, and Russell Davis of Lake Charles, La.; and a sister Mrs. Carole Favro of Tomball.

            Born February 14, 1946, in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Mr. Scott was the son of William Thomas and Rhoda Dove Scott.  He was a Vietnam veteran and lived in Nacogdoches County the last nine years, previously living in Houston.

            He is survived by his mother Mrs. Rhoda Scott of Humble; two sons, Will Scott and Cody Scott of Huntington; and two sisters, Mrs. Sue Wood of Kingwood and Ms. Kay Lewis of Humble.

            Memorials may be gifts to the Nacogdoches Public Library or a charity of choice.
