(recently laid to rest in Luther Cemetery, Luther, Okla Co, OK) was the last surviving child of James Nelson & John Anna (Stone) Sasser. Both of her parents are buried at Luther Cemetery as well. James Sasser came from Laurel Co., KY, to Bruno, AR, then to Highlandville, MO, before moving to Oklahoma. John Anna came from TN with her parents to Bruno, AR, where she married James "Jim" Sasser. Jewel's husband, Arnold Martin, raised cattle and owned a store in Luther for a time. Jewel helped or ran the store and was a devoted mother to her sons. She continued to live on the farm until a few years before her death. Her obituary states she was born in Luther, OK, but it is more likely that she was born in Ozark or Highlandville, MO. James Nelson Sasser was my great-great-granduncle. My grandmother, the late Ora Helen (Adams) Coats, always talked about a store her family owned in Luther, OK, on Route 66. Her parents were Joseph George & Bertha Catherine (Sasser) Adams. They had lived on a farm also. |
