Since January 1995, when the gray wolf reintroduction progran began, the Yellowstone population has increased from 41 wolves to 100, and the central Idaho group has grown from 25 to 73 wolves. The program is widely consedered the most successful wildlife reintroduction ever undertaken in the United States.
On December 12, 1997, U.S. Federal District Court Judge William Downes ruled that the reintroduction program does not conform to the Endangered Species Act and ordered that the reintroduced wolves and their offspring be captured and removed. Judge Downes stayed his order pending appeal.
On December 29,The National Wildlife Federation filed a notice of intent to appeal the decision to the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of appeals.
