CUB SCOUT PACK 455

PINEWOOD DERBY RULES

Sounds official, but pretty simple

The idea is be creative, but not too creative and lets have some fun building these babies !!

CONSTRUCTION: Official Boy Scout Grand Prix derby kits, catalog #17006 must be used. Kits are supplied by the Pack for the Scouts. If the adults want to buy their own kits we can certainly race after the ‘big event’.

WIDTH: Overall width shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches.

WHEELS: Must be from the official kit or from replacement axle/wheel kit (catalog#17007). Sanding of burrs and molding flash are allowed, HOWEVER the shape of the wheel cannot be altered (such as tapering of the tread).

LENGTH: Overall length shall not exceed 7 inches.

HEIGHT: Should not exceed 4 inches high.

WEIGHT: Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces on the "official" scale. Adjustments will be made to weight at weigh-in if necessary, so weight will be added to those cars needing a little boost, and removal of weight will be made so as to minimize disturbance of the cars’ appearance. Don’t add weight to the bottom of the car without insetting it because there is a ridge on the track the cars straddle for racing. If you want the aesthetics to stay as you built the car, make the car a hair light not a touch heavy to avoid ‘going under the knife’ at the inspection.

NAILS: Nails must be from the provided kit or specified axle/wheel replacement kit. Chroming or other plating of the nails is a no-no, and no altering of the wheel base is permitted. On the bright side, ridges or flash on the nails may be polished and the nail grooves in the bottom of the car can be filled in to improve appearance.

LUBRICATION: Only dry lubricants, such as graphite, are allowed. The Derby inspection team will lubricate all entrants during weigh in prior to the Pack Meeting, and may lubricate prior to the race at the committee’s sole discretion.

WHEEL BEARINGS: Washers, bushings or bearings of any type are not allowed and the plastic wheel must be in contact with the nail head and the body of the car.

DETAILS: Add all the details you want to your car, but be sure not to exceed the overall length, width, height and weight guidelines.

INSPECTION: All cars will need to be turned in to your Den Leader the week prior to the January Pack Meeting as they need to bring them to the Committee meeting. The inspection committee will do their best to assure any needed changes are made with the best intentions and will not chase down to render modifications. Once the cars are accepted, no modifications, except emergency repairs, are permitted including additional lubricants. Remember, the joy of building these Derby cars with the boys is an important part of the experience, doing well in the races is simply a bonus.
