Matthew Beckwith came from England sometime before 1639. He resided in Saybrook, Ct for a short time, he is listed there as being one of the first founders of that town. He is then found in Hartford, CT, as a freeman, where again he is considered one of the founders. He removed to a short time later to Branford, CT where helped in the organization of its first church. He then removed again, this time to Lyme, Ct. Where there he was considered as being in a class called the planters, they were all men of wealth. He owned large tracts of land along the Niantic River, granted to him by Governor Wentworth. He, also, had a barque, Endeavor, built for him which he used to trade goods with Barbados. It was the first barque built and launched in New London. Matthew died in 1681. He was apparently walking on a very dark night along a cliff of rocks where he slipped and fell to his death. He was 70 years old.

In 1732 James Beckwith and his son Samuel bought 200 acres off of John Hazen, afterward he divided it between his son Samuel and John. In 1744 he appeared in Farmington, CT and in 1746 gave his remaining rights in Norwich to Samuel. In 1752 he gave to his sons James and Reynold each half of the farm on which he lived, in the south Parish of Farmington, CT.

Ruth Beckwith (Matthew, Matthew) was born March 14, 1679/80 in Lebanon, CT, and died March 3, 1744/45 in Woodbury, Litchfield, CT. She married Jonathan Royce March 1699/1700 in Norwich, New London, CT, son of Jonathan Royce and Deborah Caulkins.
