Sir Robert Hempstead emigrated from England in 1640 to avoid persecutions resulting from the civil and religious war under Charles I . Having opposed the Church of England, he left England and landed on Long Island, NY. There he founded the town of Hempstead. He eventually went to Saybrook, Ct. In 1643 he removed to New London, then called Pequot and joining John Winthrop he helped to found that town in 1645.

Isaac Willie was in Boston, Massachusetts, as early as 1640. He removed to Charlestown, Massachusetts, and in 1645 joined John Winthrop in Pequot (now New London), Connecticut. He was the sixth on the list of grantees of that town. His house lot was on Mill Brook at the foot of Post Hill, he later removed to a farm at the head of the Nahantic River. In a town meeting held February 25, 1647, he was chosen with four others " to act in all Toune affairs", at this same meeting he was given land for a "planting lot". In May, 1649, "with certain individuals at Pequot," he is charged by the General Court as "resisting a constable and letting go an Indian commited to their charge." He was made a freeman in 1669, Apparently was not a member of the church at Pequot, as his wife, Jonanna, was notified in 1667 "to attend public worship and to bring her children thither." On November 29, 1669, Isaac Willie with three others was appointed "to lay out the King's Highway between New London and the head of the Niantick River." In August, 1671, he was a participant in the trouble arising out of the disputed lands between New London and Lyme, and was among those charged with "attempts by violence to drive Mr. Matthew Griswold and Lieut. Wm. Waller off their lands. "
