CONNECTICUT | Attractions
bulletHighland Orchards, North Stonington (800-624-0829).
The campground is located on 85 acres of one of Connecticut's first farms. Most sites are drive-thru's and in an open setting. The park offers a large swimming pool, rec room, playground, and fishing pond, just to name a few amenities. There is an RV parts and accessories store attached to the campground which also offers on-site trailer sales. Definitely a nice park with something for everyone.
bulletLake Waramaug State Park, New Preston.
Beautiful campground situated under the trees overlooking the quiet end of Lake Waramaug. Seems like a "weekenders" park with very few sites being occupied during the week. Campground is a very peaceful and relaxed atmosphere.
bulletHopkins Inn, New Preston.
Although not a campground, this wonderful inn is well worth a visit. We spent our honeymoon and several anniversaries at this lovely Federal-style home. With only 19 guest rooms (if memory serves me correct), the setting is tranquil and relaxing. The inn overlooks Lake Waramaug and has its own small private beach. While the inn is clean and the innkeepers extremely nice people, the Austrian chef (and owner) is what kept us returning. The food is simply delicious. As I mentioned above, the Clams Casino are the best we've ever tasted (and we've tried them everywhere!). Many of the dishes have an Austrian touch which is very memorable, especially the House Salad Dressing. For as many years as we've been frequenting this inn, the dressing has remained a favorite. Guesses have been made as to the ingredients in this special dressing but the chef's lips are sealed. He now bottles it in wine bottles (large and small) and makes it available to the public. Last time we were there, we brought home half a case! If you're nearby, don't pass up a chance for a true culinary experience.
bulletHousatonic Meadows State Park, Cornwall Bridge (860-927-3238)
This pretty state park sits on the Housatonic River, about a 20 minute drive from the Hopkins Inn and Lake Waramaug. We found it by accident when we went to stay at Lake Waramaug State Park and found out it was full. I now know to call ahead for reservations -- even at the last minute! However, Housatonic Meadows was very nice. We took tents and "roughed it" (compared to having our trailer with us) and had a wonderful time. The bathrooms could have been a little cleaner but were passable for the weekend. The river was very refreshingly cool as we picked a rather hot summer weekend to go away.

MAINE | Attractions
bulletSpruce Valley Campground, Bar Harbor.
Mt. Desert Island is home to Acadia National Park, the town of Bar Harbor, and, among other things, this quiet campground. Located on the sleepy side of the island, Spruce Valley's campsites are roomy, with both wooded and field sites available. There's a nice playground and swimming pool to cool off in after a day spent exploring the island.

NEW JERSEY | Attractions
bulletTall Pines Campground, Elmer (800-252-2890).
This is a great family place with lots for kids to do. They have a large pool, miniature golf, a nice playground, an arcade, and weekend activities. There is also a small pond for fishing, although we've never caught much!
bulletFour Seasons Family Campground, Woodstown (609-769-3635).
We discovered this place while "surfing the net" and had reservations over Memorial Day. The people were just as nice in person as they were on the phone. Our sites were perfect for our group -- we set up all our tables in between our campers -- which was great when 36 of us sat down to eat! While there were over 450 campsites, it is unfortunate that the two bathhouses are located right in the middle of the seasonal sites. It seems to me that they are not the ones that needed the bathrooms nearby --after all, seasonal sites have a sewer connection. The playground was nice but a long walk from our sites.

PENNSYLVANIA | Attractions
bulletBake Oven Campground, Ashfield (717-386-2911).
This campground sits at the base of the Blue Mountain not far from the Lehigh Tunnel. The sites are open and grassy with some being shaded. An open field, playground, and large swimming pool awaits your family. The owners are extremely nice, which is always a plus when camping.
bulletCountry Haven Campsite, New Holland (717-354-7926).
If you are looking for a very quiet, relaxed atmosphere, this is the campground for you. Shaded and open sites await you in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. The view of the countryside from the open sites is just incredible!
bulletHershey Highmeadow Campground, Hershey (717-566-0902).
This is the only campground in Hershey, located 2 miles from Hersheypark and Hershey's Chocolate World. The campsites are flat and spacious, with some being next to a small creek.
bulletHickory Run State Park Campground, White Haven.
This park, located in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, has large wooded and field sites that are both roomy and private. I have camped here since I was a child and, although pets are not allowed and there are no hookups, it remains one of our family's favorite spots.
bulletMill Bridge Campresort, Strasburg (1-800-645-2744).
Located at historic Mill Bridge Village, this campground has grassy shaded and stream-side sites with a fenced-in playground for kids and seasonal activities.
bulletPinch Pond Campground, Manheim (717-665-7640).
This campground is located midway between Hershey and Lancaster and a perfect spot if you're interested in the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire held just 10 minutes away. Wooded sites can be rather small but those in the field are plenty big. There is also a nice playground for the kids.
bulletRed Run Campground, New Holland (717-445-4526).
This campground lies near Lancaster, Pennsylvania's Amish Country, and Adamstown, home of the "Antique Mile'. A small creek runs beside this small campground which has open shaded sites. There are planned weekend activities, a lake for fishing and swimming, a playground and a large field area for playing ball.

VERMONT | Attractions
bulletHalf Moon State Park, Fair Haven (802-273-2848).
Half Moon is a peaceful campground with many sites directly on Half Moon Pond. While there are no hookups, the park itself is very nice. There is pond swimming and fishing and it's a perfect place for a canoe or rowboat. There are many hiking trails in and around the park.
bulletLake Bomoseen Campground, Bomoseen (802-273-2061).
This campground sits near the northern end of Lake Bomoseen, Vermont's largest lake. There is a great playground, swimming pool, summer activities and a boat launch. If needed, boat rentals are available. Lake Bomoseen is great for fishing provided you have access to a boat. Nearby (within 4 miles) are several smaller lakes that are perfect for canoe fishing. I highly recommend Roach Pond, which is less than 10 minutes away. (NOTE: 7/97 - We just returned from a week's vacation at this park. The 'atmosphere' seems to have changed somewhat from our wonderful experience last year; the owners seem a little more stressed. In spite of this, however, we still enjoyed ourselves.)

VIRGINIA | Attractions
bulletCozy Acres Campground, Powhatan (804-598-2470).
Cozy Acres was found when searching for a place to meet up with family from Greensboro, NC. The park has large wooded sites and a wonderful playground. For a small fee, there is fishing in a farm-raised catfish pond. This campground also offers a large swimming pool and lots of time for relaxation.
bulletFair Oaks Campground at the Pottery, Williamsburg (804-565-2101).
This campground has large sites, both shaded and open and is convenient to all points of interest in and around Williamsburg. A great 'homebase' when in this area, it also boasts a terrific playground for the kids, swimming pools, miniature golf, etc. -- more than enough to keep everyone busy when not sightseeing!

WEST VIRGINIA | Attractions
bulletHigh Meadow Farms Lodge, Wolf Creek (304-445-7684).
While this is not a campground, it is one of the best places to stay without your camper. This lodge sits in the mountains of southeast West Virginia near Lewisburg. It is private and the view from the hot tub on the deck of this restored log/stone cabin is simply breathtaking. There are things to do and places to see if that's your desire. If not, the Lodge seems to sit in the middle of nowhere, so if R&R is your goal, this is your spot! The best part is that you and your family or friends will be the only people there. It is rented to one group at a time.
