Looking for information on John S. B. Crossman, born ca 1857, and his sister,  Dora E. born ca 1860 in Lumpkin, GA  (Stewart Co.) to William Harvey Crossman and Anzy/Ancy/Anne Mercer.  The 1920 census in Columbus City, GA, Muscogee Co. lists a John B, age 49, salesman &   married to Roxie ????? 15 years.  Same John?  Did he shave a few years off his age? Married previously? Any children from previous marriage?

Looking for info on Chap Crossman, born ca 1852 probably in Newark, NJ. He is the son of Melyn/Maline Burnet Crossman and Sarah Anne ??????. They are listed on the 1870 Newark, NJ census (M.B. as 45 and Chap as 18) along with Mary 21 and Willemina 16. Melyn/Maline is listed as a cloth cutter. The 1875 Newark City Directory lists a Charles Crossman, clerk, at 96 Walnut St.   It also lists M.B. Crossman, cloth cutter, at 96 Walnut St. Does anyone know if Chap is a nickname for Charles? My father said he thought there had been a Charles Crossman in the family but he couldn't remember how he was related.
Information on Mary and Willemina would also be wonderful.

I was given your email address by Rodney Carr of Sydney.  I am trying to find out anything about my great grandmother Elizabeth Crossman.
Following is a list of the only information I have of her and naturally would love to trace her (and therefore part of my) roots in England - presuming that is where her origins lay.
I have carried out all the obvious steps - research interest lists, internet exploration (LDS etc), written to dozens of Crossmans by snail mail or email, checked out passenger lists of ships, followed the paths of all her 4 children and their descendants, gotten a transcript of her death certificate, found out her place of burial and looked at parish registers concerning that, tried to find siblings, talked to elderly (one is 97) rellies and so on but still she remains elusive - sounds familiar doesn't it?
There are a lot of birth/baptism registrations for Elizabeth Crossmans around the time of her birth which was around 1838-1840 so I need more information to be able to verify which, if any, is mine.
She and my great grandfather never married even though they had 4 children together.  I have verified this so that is a shame as it is one less source of information.  Anyway enough rambling - this is a long shot but will see how we go....
Elizabeth Crossman (maybe Mary is in there somewhere?)
Born 19/11/1838????  (some info gives 1840)
Died 22/9/1876 (buried the next day) at Wallace Town near Wagga Wagga in NSW Australia.
One source suggests she was married on 17/11/1864 but I am 98% certain that was not the case - children were registered with her surname - or at least the 2 of them I was able to find birth/baptism details about!!
The transcription of her death certificate states that she had been in NSW for 11 years prior to her death.
They seemed to live a nomadic lifestyle - places mentioned include Gympie (Qld), Hillend, Bathurst, Wallace Town, Grafton, Inverell and Glen Innes - all in NSW.
I have explored all sorts of records from these places - school records, tenancy etc but to no avail.
I suspect I am becoming a little obsessive about her - that is easy as an amateur genealogist!!
Maybe she had been married before coming to NSW and Crossman was her married name and that is why she and my g grandfather (John Reeves/Reves) never married?

I was surprised that "my" Crossman's were not listed in your website.  I have information on two brothers - one was my gg-grandfather.
We have a copy of a letter from Robert Crossman of Bristol England dated 5/11/1865.  It was addressed to his brother, George Wilson Crossman, then living in Chile. In this letter, Robert states he has been married 16 years as of November 5th (does not mention his wife's name) and that he has four children: George b. 10/30/1850, William b. 5/30/1852, Jane Ameali b. 3/20/1855, and Edward Colston b. 2/13/1864.   These Crossmans are somehow related to the Williams as he mentions them as "all relations are dead except Annie and Jane Williams".  He also asked about Robert Williams (in Chile) to know if he is still alive. He says there is a railway being built between Bristol to Portishead and that it "runs at the back of the old house where we were born and it crosses the brook by the viaduct by the ship carpenter yard.  The Pill station is to be at the top of Myrtle Hill".   Robert says he is still on the railway (as occupation). Robert Crossman's address is (contact Susanna personally for this address).
His brother George was my gg-grandfather.  George was born 12/10/1819 in Pill, Somerset, England and died in a storm at sea of June 5, 1865.  He is buried in Talcahuana, Chile.  He married Elizabeth Henderson Smith of New Castle, England July 16, 1852 in Talcahuana, Chile.  Her father was with the British Embassy in Chile.  All of the children were born in the British Embassy.  The children were: Mary Jane Crossman b. 11/28/1855 (named after George's mother and aunt), George Wilson Crossman, Jr. b. 2/19/1857, Robert Alfred Crossman b. 5/9/1858, Arthur Ceasar Crossman b. 1/22/1860, William P. Crossman B. 5/24/1861, Charles David Crossman b. 1/12/1863.  I descend through Charles David Crossman. After George died, Elizabeth remarried (Samuel Proctor, an American Schoolteacher) and, in 1871, they boarded the "Arnolda" (Captain I. Browell) to sail around Cape Horn bound for New Bedford, MA.  They settled for a time in Paxton, Ford County, Illinois.  They then moved to Garland, Dallas County, Texas in the late 1880's.  Descendants of these 6 Crossman children are still in that area. I have more - but I thought this information would be enough to establish these two brothers as being from Pill, Somerset, England.  We show their parents as being George and Jane Wilson Crossman.  They were  married 7/16/1815 in St. Nicholas Parish Church, Pill (Bristol), Somerset. England. I am also hoping to make connections with more English Crossman's who may be related to mine.

You will recall that we communicated a couple of months ago with regard to the Crossmans and Mundays.  In an e-mail dated June 15, you said that you would be interested in Munday information as it relates to the Crossmans.  I need to know how much you want to know about the Mundays as I have quite a lot of info that goes way back, and therefore is not directly related to the Crossmans.
Following is a brief account of what I have:
Emely Munday m. Thomas Crossman Nov. 20, 1621
Emely's parents were John Munday (St. Colomb Minor) and Emelyn Wey
John Munday's parents were William (St. Colomb Minor) and Catherine Wilcox
William's parents were John (Rialton Manor-St. Colomb Minor) and Joan
John's parents were Sir John Munday (from London) and Juniana Browne
I have Juliana Browne's family back four generations.  They consisted of the Brownes, Shaas, Wentworths, Belwoods and Flames.  Three of the Brownes were Lord Mayors of London (1513, 1480, 1448 and 1438) and the Shaas were knighted.
As I noted in an earlier e-mail, the expert on the Mundays is Mrs. A.C. Sherlock :
24 Champion Grove, London SE5 83W  If you want the Munday/Browne/Shaa pedigree, it is probably best for me to send it to you so as not to have to ask Mrs. Sherlock for yet another copy.  I will need your mailing address if you want me to send you a copy.
I noted in my June 9 e-mail  that the Crossmam Society web site has Thomas Crossman's father identified as Robert Crossman .  I have Thomas' father as Richard (listed as Ric Crossman in IGI).  I find a Robert Crossman, m. Susan Flamache 7-22-1594 Bodmin but this is the only Robert I find from Bodmin for that time period.
I have a second question which you may be able to help me with.  The IGI shows Thomas Crossman m. Ann Warner 26 Nov. 1634 St. Issey.  There is also an IGI record for Thomas Crossman marying Ann Water of Lenkinhorn on the same date.  Your Crossman web site gives Thomas' 2nd marriaage as being to Ann at St. Issey.   So, this Ann must be Ann Warner.  The Ann Water(s) is shown as christened at St. Just which is in the far west of Cornwall, some distance from Bodmin.  Let me know whether you agree that Ann was Ann Warner.
Let me know whether you want me to send info on the Mundays.  It is a most interesting line so I was rather disappointed to find that they are not part of my ancestry.

I am searching desperately for a Richard Crossman, born 1766. I assumed he would have been born in Tavistock  as the family seem to be based in that area but there is no trace of him in the Tavistock records, nor in a number of the surrounding parishes. He married a Jenny/Jane Arthur in 1819, she was 22 at the time so in view of the difference in ages it is possible he had been married previously. Richard and Jenny had ten children that I know of. Richard died on 22 February 1842.
Richard Crossman may have been married prior to his marriage to Jenny Arthur. I did some research into that theory and found a marriage of a Richard Crossman who married a Betty Cole on 8 Dec 1794 in Peter Tavy, Devon. They had two daughters, Grace (8 June 1795) and Mary (14 July 1805). Mary may have died young but Grace married a Samuel Fuge on 12 October 1819.As I said it is just a theory at this stage, nothing confirmed.

Many men in our family have CROSMAN as their middle name...myself included.  Anyone who would really know why is long gone.  I can remember hearing that we were all named after a Mary Crosman from the New England area who was an important person of sorts and she had married into the Brainard Family.  If you can help in any way I would really appreciate it.

My great grandmother's name was Caroline Belle Crossman. She was born on Dec 20, 1875 in Beaver Creek, Rock County, Minnesota. Her father's name was Bishop Isbol Crossman.  He was born on Aug 19, 1836 in Essex County, NY but I'm not sure exactly where.  He married Mary Jane Brooks. He passed away in 1911 in Fedora, South Dakota.
Caroline Belle Crossman married my great grandfather, Willis George Cole in Rock County, Minnesota and shortly thereafter moved to Vegreville, Alberta, Canada in the year 1900.
Bishop Isbol's father's name was Eliakim Crossman and from what I can understand, his wife's name was Betsy (maiden name unknown).

I have a tiny piece of CROSSMAN data which may be of interest.
Elizabeth CROSSMAN bp.25 Jan 1712 Cardinham, Cornwall,  dau. of Richard CROSSMAN and Jane (HENWOOD) was married to my 6GUncle David COPPIN  on 2 Feb 1741, Cardinham. There were no children to this union as far as I can tell and David was married again in 1755 so I presume that Elizabeth died by then although I have no record of that. Well I did say that it was only a little but it all helps to build the big picture so I hope it is of some use.

My gggrandmother was Martha Arminta CROSSMAN, who married John Johannes Jakobsen STAVRUM from Norway.  They settled in Fall City, Dunn Cty., Wisconsin.  They had 6 children, all born in Fall City - one of their offspring is my ggrandmother, Jessie May ( or Mary) STAVRUM.
My gggrandfather, John (STAVRUM), was born in Ytteroy, Nord-Trondelag, Norway - probably between 1847 and 1858.  He was the only member of his family to emigrate to the United States.  I can assume that Martha Arminta CROSSMAN was born around the mid 1800's, as well.

If you have any CROSSMAN families that have a Martha or an Arminta in them, I would like to hear back from you regarding this.

I am a member of a particularly small branch of the Crossman family (almost certainly related to the Liverpool members on your database). We also have a coat of arms, but not the same as on your home page. Do you want more details of our family history (only back to the mid 19th century, I'm afraid)?

My name is Paul Crossman, born in Par, Cornwall on 15 Mar 1957. My father is Rex Crossman, born near Bugle, Cornwall in Sep 1926. My grandfather, Percy Crossman, was also born in Cornwall but date unknown. My father could take us further back I am sure, but I have not yet had the chance to ask him. So, a general query at this stage is whether you could provide any information (based on the slender information above !) that might take us from my grandfather Percy back to one of the families listed in the County or regional lists you have compiled. Any pointers you could provide would be gratefully received, but in the interim I will speak with my father to see if he could provide details on his grandfather and perhaps even further back than that.

I was told that our family migrated from either Scotland or England (do not know), in the late 1700's, to Philidelphia. The Philidelphia part is correct.  My Great Gradfather, George Washington Crossman went into the coffe business in the mid 1800's.  He eventually moved to New York.  I know my grandfather was born and raised across the street from Central Park around 1886.  My Great Grandfather founded the Coffee Exchange.  I have the lease he signed for space on Beacon St. in 1898.  Would like to find out where we came from.  Just starting and looking for help.

The Emblin Crossman m. April 17, 1706 at Launceston would not be mine.  My Emblin was ch. July 16, 1643 at Bodmin.   The Crossman Society has her as the daughter of Thomas Crossman and Ann, but I have her as the daughter of Thomas Crossman and  Emely Munday (ch. Sept. 18, 1595).   I have my Thomas as the son of Richard Crossman and Jone Kestell, m. Sept. 13, 1574 at Bodmin.

We believe my great grandfather emmigrated to Toronto, Canada in the 1890's from Blackpool, England.  His name was William Arthur Crossman.  We wondered if you had any information that may assist us in tracing related Crossman's before him.  We have no information about his parents.  We understand he had both brothers and sisters: brothers Harry, Thomas and we think, Bert:  sisters Polly, Maude and Liza.

I have high hopes of one day knowing more of my grandfather's coming to New Jersey.  For the time being I know only that Leonard Crossman, 1816-1892, is as far back as we have gotten and we know little else.
I wish to connect one day with another branch or at least realize our branch's place of original birth (England).  It would be wonderful. Any ideas are welcomed.
I have found one other Crossman in N.J  and we could not link.  My grandfather Harry DeMott Crossman told me his father of the same name, born in 1877, died the year he was born -- 1904.  He knew nothing more of him.

I'm looking for people interested in the Crossman family of Chilton Polden, Somerset.
In particular, I'm trying to track down the family of Jane Crossman, born circa 1804 in Chilton Polden.  In 1833 she married Richard Harvey in Shapwick, and she was living in the General Shop there at the time of the 1881 census.

My Joseph was born in 1844 at Widgate Cornwall.  I think someone said that is in the Morval parish.  I hope the other Crossman's in Morval would be my Joseph's parents.  I will have to look and see how to order a birth certificate for Joseph, hopefully that would tell me who his parents would have been.  The 1881 census from County Durham is where I got the year 1844.  His daughter, my great grandmother was born in 1872 in Morvall.  Joseph married a Mary Tamilyn Soady.

I recently came across a Fanny Jane Crossman, born at Exmouth or Linmouth (Devon) around 1820, who in 1840 married John Jeffkins Clarke, a stock broker's clerk, in Lambeth (Surrey, but now South London). Her father was a clergyman, Francis Gooch Crossman, and her eldest son, born March 1841, was named Frank Crossman Clarke.
Her husband had by then became a Stock Exchange member himself, going into
partnership with his erstwhile principal to form the broking firm of Linton and
Clarke, where two of his and Fanny's sons later followed him in business. The
firm later became Capel Cure, Linton, Clarke & Co., and retained that name until
1967. More recently it has been Capel Cure Myers until its latest change of name
a week or so ago.
From the Last Will and Testament of John Jeffkins Clarke of Nš 2 Exchange Buildings in the City of London Stock and Share Broker:
"I give and bequeath the Silver candlestick (which was presented by the late Lord Nelson to Mrs Julia Crossman the mother of my late wife) unto my son The Reverend Percy Carmichael Clarke absolutely."
So have the West Country Crossmans any known naval associations?
I don't know if Nelson was in the habit of presenting ladies with candlesticks.   Perhaps Julia's husband was one of his officers.

The following, rather convoluted, copy of my message to Tom Crosman explains how I believe I have finally found my immigrant CROSSMAN ancestor (4g grandfather) who emigrated from England ca. 1805-1810 with wife and several (at least one, Caroline) children, and settling in Cincinnati, Ohio. Peter and Catherine (ROLFE) CROSSMAN married in London, but he may have been from Devon, possibly Cornwall, if not native of London.
>>>Tom,  I trust you received my thanks for the Ohio Crossman information.   In that message I had said:
Re. Caroline (CROSSMAN) BRIGHAM (b. 1800) of Cincinnati:

>>>My assumption is that she is of the Massachusetts Crossmans because of something her granddau. (my great grandfather's sister) told me many, many years  ago.  Half-forgotten by me (wish I had paid more attention then) - the story that her family had been neighbors of her husband's family back in Massachusetts.   Caroline CROSSMAN of Cincinnati and Matthias BRIGHAM of Marlborough, Mass. were married in Cincinnati in 1821.  But this might not have been the case - for example, perhaps her family came from New Jersey or New York before moving to Cincinnati.   Another assumption on my part is that her family moved to Cincinnati.  Perhaps she was the only one to do so, but I doubt it. I also do not know where she was born although I have a reliable date (from Brigham family bible).  I know who the minister was who married them in Cincinnati.  If I can find out his church, then perhaps this will lead me to Church records (christenings, births, deaths, marriages) that will list her and perhaps - I hope - other family members in earlier years.  Right now, I think this is my best bet to track down these elusive CROSSMANs.
>>>Now, I believe I have located her - it is certainly probable.  From various records from Cincinnati there appear to have been two CROSSMAN families in that town around the time of Caroline's marriage in 1821 to Matthias BRIGHAM of Marlborough, Mass. :    William and Peter CROSSMAN.   William (b. ca. 1787, age 76 at death in 1863), and wife Jane V. (b.ca. 1788, age 86 at death in 1874), came to Cincinnati from Mass. (his place of birth; she listed previous address as Martha's Vineyard) in 1814, and had dau. Martha CROSSMAN who m. 17 June 1844 Cincinnati, Henry S. BLATCHFORD (she was the only child named as a beneficiary in William's will filed 12/14/1863 with Probate Court of Hamilton Co., Ohio) William and Jane V. CROSSMAN were too young to have been Caroline's parents.  The only other CROSSMAN family I found in Cincinnati at the time of Caroline's 1821 marriage was that of Peter CROSSMAN (b.ca. 1774 England, age 84 at time of death 29 Dec 1858; this would make him about 26 in 1800 when Caroline CROSSMAN was born).  I have not yet found any record of him in Cincinnati prior to the 1817 Cincinnati Census:

CROSSMAN, Peter  male 1  21/up 2  12/21 1  un/12 female 1  21/up 1  12/21 5  un/12 Notice that in his household in 1817 was one female between the age of 12 and 21 - If this was Caroline she would be 17 years old, with two brothers bet. 12 and 21, one brother under 12, and five sisters under age 12 (assuming these were all children of Peter and his wife; I suspect they were).
William CROSSMAN, in the same census, had only three children in his household: one boy 12-21, one boy under 12, and one girl under 12 (prob. Martha)
The Cincinnati Directory (of all men age 21 or older) for 1825 lists the following neighbors (all living within one block of each other): BRIGHAM, Matthias:  Fifth St., bet. John and Smith Streets; born Massachusetts CROSSMAN, Peter:  Longworth St., bet. John and Smith Streets; born England CROSSMAN, William: Sixth St., bet. John and Smith Streets; born Massachusetts
Then, I checked the IGI for England for Caroline and Peter CROSSMAN (before, I had only looked for CROSSMANs in North America) and found some very interesting information, if correct:
CROSSMAN, Caroline;  Christened: 16 Nov 1800, Saint Mary, St. Marylebone Road, St. Marylebone, London Father: Peter CROSSMAN; Mother:  Cathe.Caroline    CROSSMAN was listed in her daughter's Bible as b. 29 Oct 1800 (no location noted).  It is certainly probable/possible that she was born in London, and christened as a nearly three-week old infant, as indicated above.

CROSSMAN, Peter; Married: 13 May 1799 Saint Martin In The Fields, Westminster, London, Catherine ROLFE. This date is about a year and a half before Caroline was born.
I realize the IGI is not all-inclusive, but these are the only Caroline and Peter CROSSMANs listed of the correct time.  There are other Peter CROSSMANs a bit earlier in Devon (Tavistock, Walkhampton, Kingsbridge, Okehampton, and Exeter) and a few in London.  Devonshire and Cornwall seem to have been CROSSMAN / CROSMAN hotspots!
There was a Peter CROSSMAN who m. 31 May 1772, Tavistock, Devon, England, Mary PITT.
Peter CROSSMAN of Cincinnatti was born ca. 1774.  While they may have been his parents, it is too much of an assumption on my part without other information.
At this point, Peter CROSSMAN and his wife Catherine with at least one (Caroline), prob. several, children, presumably emigrated to America, finally winding up in Cincinnati and going no further, sometime between 1801 and 1817. In 1817, Peter CROSSMAN had 6 children in his household who were under 12 years of age, and three who were older than 12 (Caroline was 17).  Perhaps the older children were born in England and the younger ones were born in America - just a guess.  If that was the case, emigration about 1805 is likely.  It is improbable that they emigrated during or after 1812 when U.S. and Britain were at war.  My guess is 1805-1810.
Unfortunately, no will is listed for Peter (there is for William) in the book, _ Wills Filed With Probate Court of Hamilton, Ohio (1791-1901)_ , so no further clues to children's names.
Some Marriage and Death Notices of CROSSMANs in Cincinnati:

From _Hamilton, County, Ohio, Marriage Records_, DAR Cincinnati:
  CROSSMAN, Martha m. 17 June, 1844 Henry S. BLATCHFORD
CROSSMAN, Peter m. 28 Aug 1844 Catherine HOWARD
CROSSMAN, Lewis 8 Oct 1846 Eliza PATTON
From: _Hamilton County Marriage Index, 1817-1845, Vol. I_, L.E. Hughes, Heritage Books (1994):
CROSSMAN, Caroline 1821 "Matthew Buckingham" (someone's poor interpretation of poor hand-writing; should be Matthias BRIGHAM - it was!)
  CROSSMAN, Catharine 1836 William REEVE
CROSSMAN, Elizabeth 1842 Nathan B. MARSH
CROSSMAN, Martha 1844 Henry S. BLATCHFORD
  CROSSMAN, Peter 1844 Catherine HOWARD
From Cincinnati Daily Gazette, Marriage Notices (1827-1881):

CROSSMAN, Elizabeth m. Nathan MARSH 3 Nov 1842
  CROSSMAN, H.S. m. Otho OTT 3 May 1837
CROSSMAN, Sarah m. James POLLARD 4 May 1866
From above, Martha is dau. of William of Massachusetts, Caroline is dau. of Peter of England, Catherine and Elizabeth MIGHT be younger sisters of Caroline, Peter MIGHT be brother of Caroline (if a less-likely second marriage for Peter the immigrant, he would have been 70 y.o.)

I hope you find this of interest.  It certainly has helped me to organize some
of my notes!  This is certainly NOT what I had expected, but it seems very
probable.  Here is a new CROSSMAN / CROSMAN immigrant - Peter CROSSMAN from England to Ohio ca. 1805-1810.  What do you think?<<<

Andi,   So, I am curious, of course, to know if you have come across this Peter CROSSMAN   and/or his likely family of origin.  I do not at this time know his place of birth other than "England" nor do I know his parents.  My guess is that he was either born in London or in Devonshire somewhere.  Cornwall anyone?

I am Stafford Crossman, nephew of Richard H S Crossman, and grandson of Sir Stafford Crossman, judge in Chancery division.  I am trying to find records of my family tree beyond my great-grandfather Edward Crossman a solicitor in Hambrook Gloucester who married Veronica Matilda Marsh.

I noted your Crossman interests in the CFHS pages.I too have interests in this name as I have an Andrew Crossman who m.Marye Wallis 21 Apr 1583 Egloskerry and Catherine Crossman who m.George Wallis 15 Sep 1755 Madron on my Family Tree.
I am not aware of Andrews parents but unless there are other Catherines that I am not aware of she is the dau of Henry Crossman and Marjery Roberts baptised 6 Dec 1722 Truro.I have traced this line back to a Stephani Crossman and Elizabeth Preiste who m.Apr 1613 Truro.I have an IGI printout of the Crossman of Cornwall section and I noted that in the 1500s/1600s there were family names such as Cathera,Catherine,Katura,Patrick and Pathricke, which makes me think that these early Crossmans were of Irish descent.
I have a FT which goes back to a John Walyshe who m.Marye 28 Jan 1546 Camborne. It was their dau Marye that m. Andrew Crossman. It was my 4xgt.grandfather George Wallis that m.Catherine Crossman. The family line of Andrew and Marye started at Egloskerry and came down through St.Mewan and Mevagissey.Would any of this be pertinent to your research?

I will have to get in touch with someone in South Africa who is interested in doing the research. But in the meantime I will gather some of the relevant info that I have and pass it on to you. An interesting piece to start with is - the 1st born son of at least 3 generations of descendants of this Captain (it is a rank) Crossman were all named William Henry Crossman. This may have been the continuation of a much older practice. What do you think ? And if so, it may be possible to pick up the family line from this clue before it left England (assuming England was their home country).

Have you come across any info relating to any  Crossman migrating to the Caribbean (Jamaica to be specific).
