1997 OUTSTANDING FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR

The Hendersonville Fire Department is proud to honor an employee who has consistently provden to be a tremendous asset to our department. He has risen through the ranks to his present supervisory position through hard work and dedication. It is routine for him to perform extra duties without being asked and to volunteer whenever there's a need for his skills. He shows pride in his work and always completes any assignment without complaint.

Those employees under his command recognize him to be a fair leader as well as a competent instructor and advisor. He sets an outstanding example for the new employees and provides them with support and guidance during the beginning of their career.

The Fire Chief has come to rely on his outstanding character. Even if the matter involves differing points of view, he is honest and respectful in expressing his opinions.

He is a graduate of Hendersonville High School and began his career with the Hendersonville Fire Department in 1979 when he was hired as a Firefighter. In 1985 he was promoted to the rank of Senior Firefighter and it was noted then that this individual had the potential to become an outstanding officer. Shortly thereafter in 1988, he was promoted to the rank of Captain. He became a Shift Commander in 1996 and currently has responsibility for the personnel on "B" Shift.

Personally, he is a dedicated father to his son Eric and an outstanding example of someone with a positive attitude and optimistic outlook on life.

In the 19 years since he became a member of our department, all his actions have been directed toward the betterment of our service to the citizens of this community. We are fortunate this man chose firefighting as his profession. It is with great pleasure that we award the Outstanding Firefighter of the Year to Nathan Douglas, Jr.
