Hoss's Page

"Tears"

This is a memorial to the best dog that ever lived. I thank the Lord that he was able to be a part of our lives.

Hoss is our family pet. He is 17 years old, believe it or not! Hoss is a purebred American Pit Bull, and contrary to popular belief, Pit Bulls are generally loving and sweet dogs. Especially to children! Basically, the owner is the one who decides if the Pit Bull will be mean or nice, its all in how the dog is treated and trained. The only bad thing about Hoss is that he really can't stand cats, but then what dog can? If he saw one today, he would TRY to chase it, and IF he caught it, would try to gum it to death...he doesn't really have any teeth left!! We really love Hoss, and we know that he can't live forever, so that is why I am creating this page for him. Its a very long story how Hoss came to live with my family, but he has been a part of our big family for 13 years. Last year in May, the family member he was living with moved out of state. There was a choice at that time for him to be put to sleep, or we could take him. We were the only ones in the family with the ability to do so...so here he is. When I work on my computer, he lays on the carpet to my left in the sunlight from the window. He loves to lay on the couches too, and we don't have the heart to tell him no...

June 17, 1998 Updated information: Hoss had a stroke last weekend, and now the right side of his face hangs lower than the left, and he keeps his right legs straight all the time, and wobbles when he walks. He still seems to be his happy, stubborn self though, and we just don't know if the time has come to say goodbye to him... There will be a lot of broken hearts in this house if we have to put him to sleep. It won't be an easy decision to make, but if it looks like he is suffering, we may have to do it.

October 24, 1998 More updated information: After his stroke, Hoss began doing much better, and he can now run, jump and roll almost like he always has...he has this thing about galluping into the living room, jumping into the air, and landing on his back and rolling around...and he still can!! The side of his face still hangs down, but he is happy and does not seem to be in any pain. He is still able to bark and make all of his normal bossy (pet me now!!) noises too. He is now 17 1/2 years old!! I wish with all my heart he could live forever...

December 5, 1998 More updated information: Hoss died on December 3, 1998. He had not eaten much since November 29th, and seemed to be losing his eyesight. The morning he died, his back legs were very week, and he wasn't able to move much. We had some baby formula, and he drank that and ate some cheese and bread, but after a while he just laid down on his side and started slipping away. I petted him and told him how much I loved him, and asked him not to leave but I knew he was going. My neighbors came over and buried him in the back yard for us. It seems too quiet now without his own special bark that always told us "Come see me!! Now!!" and just two days before he died, he did his escape act and got off of his lead to go see the neighbor's dog...I know he is in a better place now, and his old bones won't feel the winter cold anymore, but our hearts are broken. There will never be another dog like Hoss, he was one of a kind and very special.
We love you old man.

Hoss on the couch snoozing...

Here is Hoss being petted, and believe me, that is his favorite pastime...we nicknamed him the "love puppy". If you stop petting him, he will follow you around bumping you with his nose until you start petting him again!
