How We Met

We grew up and finally met each other when we were in the 10th grade in Mission High School (San Francisco). How did we meet? Well, we had an English class together.. and the class made a movie about Julius Ceasar.. so we were in the movie together, and started talking. We went on our first date Dec 10, 1969 to the ROTC Winter Ball... I still have the corsage he gave me! (AWWW...) I was a little worried at first.. I was about 2 inches taller, so I sure made sure to wear flat shoes! We had a great time dancing and visiting with our friends. Pretty soon we started going steady.. course we had to "Officially" wait til I turned 16.. rules ya know! Here is a picture of us together at my 16th birthday picnic.

The Prom

Well.. to continue... we pretty much went steady all through High School. Though we did break up a few times... young love! Senior Prom time came, so we decided to go, even though my hubby had pretty much dropped out of school by then. (Dont worry.. he got his GED later!) Oh... I wasn't worried about what shoes to wear this time! I am wearing 2" heels!

What a stunning couple huh? Dig that crazy bow tie! And the silly little bow in my hair! Gosh I can still remember how much hairspray there was in my hair! We had a wonderful time at the Prom, doing the "Penquin" and the "Grapevine" and all those "Old" dances! LOL! After the Prom, we went driving with our friends, and eventually went out to breakfast at "Kerry's" resturaunt in San Francisco! That was THE PLACE to go back then! I believe I finally got home around 4:30 in the morning! (SHH.. don't tell our kids! LOL)

The Proposal and The Wedding

A few months later, my sweetie went and joined the Navy. He went off to boot camp & I thought that was the end for us. Boy was I surprised when he called one day, and proposed to me over the phone. Of Course I said YES!!! We had to wait for him to finish his school in Millington TN. So in March 1973 we got married! Gosh we were soooo young!

Well, soon enough, he had to "ship out".. duty calls. My hubby was assigned to the Naval Air Station Guam. He left first, and I waited at home until he could save enough money to get an apartment and pay my airfare over there. In Oct. 1973, I finally jumped on a plane and made the 16 hour flight. We were so happy to be back together again.

Our Daughter Jennifer

Our eldest daughter, Jennifer, was born in the Naval Hospital Agana Guam in July 1974. Gosh it sure was hard being so far from "home" with a new baby! I heard so many local tales while I was pregnant about what to do, and what not to do... Some of them were quite strange to me-- but they were sure serious about their traditions. Things like "wear your husbands shirt if you go walking in the boonies.. so the ghosts of the ancestors wont know you're female..." (the boonies are like the jungle area) Yeah.. like I'm gonna go walking around in a jungle.. LOL But, I was sure glad for some of the advice they gave me. For example, when Jen was only 5 months old or so, we went to the beach, and even though I kept her in the shade, she got a sunburn and blistered. I took her to the Navy doctors, and they said "do nothing it will be okay." I happened to take her to the local grocery store the same day, and the Mamma fussed so much! She gave me some freshly made coconut oil and insisted that I put it on her blisters.. saying "never mind the haole Dr's.. what do they know!" So, I did! She healed within 3 days, and not one single scar. After that I did what Mamma advised! Here's a fairly recent picture of Jen. She's really a blonde, but she changes her hair color all the time!

The Saga Continues..

We finally left Guam in June 1976, and were assigned to Lemoore CA. Of course Hubby had to go to "another school", this time in San Diego. All of our relatives met us at the airport. They had only seen pictures of Jen, and the same for her. So it was an exciting return.I was 7 months pregnant with our son, Jeremy when we left Guam. So everyone was excited about that too. We decided that I should stay with my mom, since Jeremy was due in August, and my Hubby's school wouldnt be finished til October. So we did!

Our Son Jeremy

Jeremy was born in August 1976 at Letterman Army Hospital, San Francisco CA. The morning Jeremy decided he would be born was sure exciting! Of course, since I was soooo experienced, I hadn't packed my suitcase, cuz "I'll have plenty of time to do that". Well, I was sure wrong! I woke up at about 4:30 am with a little cramping, and decided this was the beginning. I went back to bed and about 20 minutes later.. whoosh .. my water broke! Yikes!! I had already arranged with my brother, who was 16 at the time, to drive me to the hospital. And so he did... it sure was an exciting ride... he got in the car, turned it on, and hit the gas! I swear.. he was in a panicked trance.. at one point we were headed for some road construction workers. There were all those flashing smoke pots and everything.. but my brother headed straight for them! You should have seen the workers come popping up outta the hole in the street, waving their arms! Luckily he came to his senses at the last minute and swerved out of the way! We actually made it to the hospital around 5:30 am without further incidence, not that he slowed down or anything!! Jeremy made his Debut at 6:17 am.. whew.. Made it in time! I swear that's where my son gets his "need for speed" when he's driving. LOL.. Here's a recent picture of Jer.

We go our Separate ways...

During the years, we had problems in our lives. And in 1984 we got divorced...

My hubby continued with his military career, and traveled to many different duty stations. The children would visit him during the summer, when he was in the U.S. He worked really hard, and enjoyed his Navy career. He retired as a Senior Chief in 1994. He then decided to get that College education, so enrolled in Greenville College in South Carolina. After he moved out here, he continued college for 2 more semesters. He decided that he wanted to go back to work, and now he has a "new career" with the Federal Gov't.

Meanwhile, I returned to California, and began looking for a career of my own. After working a few minimum wage jobs, I eventually found a career job with the Federal Gov't. I have gone through a lot of transistions in my job over the last 15 years! In 1988 I also had another child.

The Youngest Daughter, Kristian

Kristian was born in November 1988 in the Alameda Hospital, Alameda CA. I can say that I was totally surprised when I found out that I was pregnant! But somehow, I knew there was a reason! I had some problems while pregnant, and had to undergo some tests. I also developed gestational diabetes... but luckily I was able to control that with diet. Imagine, no sugar at all for the whole time... everytime I saw a cake or something like that I just groaned. But the end result was worth it. The most exciting thing that has happened to Kris, so far, was stitches. (She loves to tell this story too!) When she was about 4 years old, we were taking care of a friends dog. One day, Kris and the dog were on the back porch, and she was sitting on the banister. The dog got excited and jumped up and knocked her over, and she fell about 8 feet down the stairwell. She had a bad cut in her forehead, and I had to take her to the emergency room. She had to get 6 stitches in her head, close to the hairline, sort of in the shape of a letter "L". I had never experienced stitches with the older two, so it was a new experience for me too. Later on in the night, she had to go back to the emergency room, and had to have a "CAT" scan. The doctor told her, that they had to make sure she didn't have any "cats" inside her head. Luckily for all of us, the scan was normal... no cats were found! Here is a recent picture of Kris. She is now (Sept 2002) a Freshman in High School.

We Reunite....

Like most people who divorce and have children, we chatted about the kids during the years we were divorced. But neither of us were aware of any "embers" that might have been there between us. Although from time to time each of us wondered to ourselves, what would it have been like if we had stayed together?

Well, in June 1995, he called out of the blue just to "chat"... we started out talking about the kids, and then started talking about ourselves. That phone call began around 8pm and lasted until 5am the next morning! During that conversation, we determined that maybe there were still some embers left burning... Many more long phone calls later, we decided that he should come out here to California to visit for a week or so. (He was in South Carolina) We made all the arrangements, plane tickets, dates etc. Then we talked about what to tell "the kids"! See, we had decided that when he got here we should go away together for a couple of days, so that we could see how things worked out. Well, when I finally mentioned to the kids that he was coming, and about our plans to go away for a couple days... they thought we had both flipped out. LOL!!!

The trip obviously went well! He stayed for 2 weeks, and it was a sad day when he had to leave. But, he moved out here, furniture, cat, motorcycle, and all in August 1995. We have been together ever since, and it feels kinda of like it used to when we first got married. Of course, we have grown up alot over the years! We have learned to appreciate the little things in life. Just having someone you can depend on to be there to listen to your worries, and share your happiness, means the world to us. We plan on getting re-married, one of these days. We have decided that it WON'T be the same date as before..
