To his son, John, when he turns 21 "all that Messuage or tenement and garden.... known as Jones' at Etchingham now occupied by Peter Page and Thomas Blunt". THE FAMILY OF JOHN HUNTLY.

JOHN HUNTLY married (1) MARY BOOTS (wrongly recorded as Mary Booth) at St. Mary the Virgin Church of England, Salehurst on 29-4-1779. Issue baptised at Salehurst were -

  1. ELIZABETH baptised 12-6-1780. (Illegitimate child SOPHIA baptised 31-7-1796?).

  3. GEORGE baptised 26-12-1784.

Mary Boots Huntly died in 1786. Further issue of John and Mary Huntly are recorded at Salehurst from 1791 onwards although there is no recorded marriage there.

  4. HANNAH baptised 24-11-1798 (aged 7). Born c.1791.
  5. SOPHIA baptised 24-11-1798 (aged 5). Born c.1793.
  6. ANN baptised 24-11-1798 (aged 2). Born c.1796.
  7. HARRIOTT baptised 31-7-1801.
  8. REBECCA baptised 24-3-1807.

an extensive search throughout the surrounding parishes was conducted for the marriage of John Huntly to Mary ? A John Huntly of Salehurst married MARY BENE of Warbleton on 11-11-1793 at Warbleton but there is no way of being certain that it is "our John Huntly".

In the tax returns of the Salehurst Parish, a John Huntly is listed as having a house or tenement in 1780. In 1783 he is listed as paying 2 pounds rent to Robert Chalmers, and 8/- tax for a new house. This record continues till 1794. From 1816 John Huntly, wife and 3 children, reseived relief from the Salehurst Parish. At times his wife is listed as "ill" and "very ill" although thwere is no record of her dying. A horse and cart was hired to carry John to Beckley but he is not recorded as dying there. In 1819 John was "ill" then "very ill". on 5-6-1819 the entry reads "Paid out for the lying out of John Huntly" and on 28-6-1819 "Star Master for burying John Huntly". (The East Sussex Records Office interprets the term Star Master as meaning Mr. Star was the grave-digger). There is no record in the Salehurst Parish Register of the burial of John Huntly. The most likely reason is that John was a non-conformist.

After John's death, payments were made to Widow Huntly, Rebecca Huntly (13) and Henery Huntly (11) as well as a separate payment to Harriott Huntly. The only Henery in the baptismal register is the son of William and Lucy Huntly baptised on 5-5-1811. Since the Widow's first name is not recorded, the two children could have been living with either William or John's widow, or Henery could have been an unbaptised son of John and Mary - perhaps baptised in a non-conformist church.

ANN HUNTLEY married WILLIAM FAIRHALL on 24-7-1815 at Mountfield. Ann is recorded as the daughter of John Huntley of Robertsbridge. Issue - See Fairhall page.
HARRIOTT HUNTLEY married CHARLES MITCHELL.
