Of Sussex.

FRANCIS LEADBETTER married (1) MARTHA GODFREY on 2-6-1640 at Salehurst, Sussex. His second wife, as mentioned in his will which was drawn up in 1654, was SYLVESTER ? There is no record of Martha's death or Francis' second marriage. Francis' issue was -

  1. MARTHA baptised 20-3-1641/2 at Etchingham, Sussex.
  2. HENRY baptised 12-11-1644 at Etchingham. buried 24-3-1645/6 at Etchingham.
  3. WILLIAM baptised 7-2-1645/6 at Etchingham. buried 5-1-1649/50 at Etchingham.
  4. FRANCIS baptised 14-4-1650 at Etchingham.
    These four were issue of Francis and Martha.
  5. JOHN - mentioned in the will. It is uncertain whether he was the son of Martha or Sylvester.
  6. SYLVESTER - a Sylvester Leadbetter married JOHN BONDEN on 26-1-1664/5 at Salehurst and was presumably Francis' daughter also.

Francis' will was proved in November, 1665. His wife, Sylvester, was sole executor. Bequests were for his wife and sons,Francis and John.

JOHN LEADBETTER married (1) SUSANNA OLIVE on 22-5-1669 at Etchingham. She was buried on 29-5-1705 at Etchingham. Known issue was -

  1. SUSAN baptised 27-9-1684 at Burwash, Sussex.
  2. JOHN baptised 4-10-1696 at Burwash.

JOHN LEADBETTER married (2) ELIZABETH DELVES on 8-4-1708 at Etchingham.

JOHN LEADBETTER married (3) ELIZABETH ALLEN on 2-12-1725 at Whatlington, Sussex.

John Leadbetter's will was made in 1710. It was proved 22-5-1729 by Elizabeth Leadbetter of Burwash, his widow. To his wife, sole executor, he left his house at Whatlington. To his son, John, he left 3 houses and brook at Mountfield, a house at Penhurst and a house at Burwash. to his daughter, Sarah, he left one shilling. It is not known who was Sarah's Mother.

JOHN LEADBETTER married MARGARET HISCOCK on 26-10-1723 by licence (no place given). Issue, baptised at Salehurst -

  1. MARY baptised 6-9-1730.
  2. JOHN baptised 20-2-1731/2.
  3. WILLIAM baptised 2-1-1736/7.

John Leadbetter made his will in 1776 and it was proved on 3-5-1780 by Robert Chambers, which suggests that his wife predeceased him. He made bequests to - ELIZABETH, his daughter, wife of ROBERT CHAMBERS of Salehurst. Mary Huntly, widow, his daughter - 1 guinea; Ten pounds each to his Huntly grandchildren - Mary, John, Ann, George, William, Thomas and Elizabeth when they reached 21; An extra 10 pounds for an apprenticeship for William Huntly; one guinea each to granddaughters - Elizabeth, wife of William Dunk, Sarah, wife of David Dunk and Lydia Chambers. The will also mentions a watch "property of my late son, John".

MARY LEADBETTER married GEORGE HUNTLY.

The Olive/Oliffe Family.

The issue of NICHOLAS and ANN OLIVE, baptised at Ticehurst, Sussex, were -

  1. THOMAS baptised 14-8-1642.
  2. NICHOLAS baptised 24-3-1643/4.
  3. JAMES baptised 20-8-1646.
  4. ANNA (SUSANNA?) baptised 1-1-1648/9.
  5. MARY baptised 8-9-1651.
  6. MICHAEL baptised 22-11-1653.
  7. KATHERINE baptised 10-3-1655/6.

    There were no marriages recorded at Ticehurst between 1642 and 1652 (Commonwealth Period).

    SUSANNA OLIVE married JOHN LEADBETTER.
