- | John Balkwell came from Devonshire, England in 1831 and cleared 4 acres 2 miles south of present-day EXETER. So impressed with Canada and the area, he returned to England and persuaded friends and family to come over and settle in Canada with him. |
- | Some of these early settlers include MAY's, HOLMAN's, GREENWAY's, SNELL's, HANDFORD's, BISSETT's, ESSERY's and BALKWELL's. |
- | The Devon Settlement was situated at what today is the corner of Hwy 4 and CREDITON/EDEN sideroad. It boasted a store, post office, church, 2 inns/hotels and a toll-gate. |
I have gathered the above information from several
different sources, over the years esp. "Sims' History of
Elgin County, by Hugh Joffrey Sims; 1984; pr. by Aylmer Express Ltd" and
believe it all to be true. However I very much welcome any corrections
anyone may be able to give me and with proper documentation (via email), changes will be made promptly. |
