FARQUHAR
(Taunton)

- Lots 1,2 & 3 were first sold to Alexander McDONALD in 1855 for building of a hotel.
- Thames Road Cheese Factory was built in late 1860's with Andrew MALCOM as head cheesemaker.
- Weigh scales were built before 1900 in the community
- Farquar Hall's grand opening was Dec. 5, 1895.  Many of the area's social functions were held here.  A wood stove was used for heat and coal oil lamps supplied the lighting.  Locals would usually supply musical entertainment for the numerous dances.
- The general store was opened by Alex Duncan in 1870 and remained in operation until 1975)
- My great-great uncle George HAZLEWOOD   owned 1 acre on the south-east corner of Lot 18 and his wife Lucy (nee BRAY) was well known for her Scald Cream dessert topping.  Area children loved her sweet tea and high feather-tick bed.

I have gathered the above information from several different sources, over the years esp. "Sims' History of Elgin County, by Hugh Joffrey Sims; 1984; pr. by Aylmer Express Ltd" and believe it all to be true.     However I very much welcome any corrections anyone may be able to give me and with proper documentation (via email), changes will be made promptly.

Thanx .. 'auntie' chaos ...
