The Polley Homepage

Looking for the parents of David Polly (ca 1778-1847)

I am always looking to find my Polly/Polley/Pauley/Pawley Ancestors.

I have traced my Family back to Lewis County Kentucky where David Polly (ca 1778-1847) and his wife Nancy (Probably Ford) (ca 1787-ca 1862) appeared in the 1814 Tax List. Extensive research indicates this couple may have married in 1803 Adair County Kentucky. Several Polly families moved from Adair County Kentucky into Butler County Ohio ca 1807 and scattered into several areas about 1814. David Polly is believed to be the Brother of William Polly of Darke County Ohio and James Polly of Floyd County Kentucky.

There is evidence that the above men are related to Edward Polly and David Polly who have been proven to have moved from Pittsylvania County Virginia to Floyd County Kentucky. There was also a John Polly of Pittsylvania County Virginia who lived in Adair County Kentucky. None of these men can be the father of My David Polly and his brothers.

General information on David Polly of Lewis County Ky.

David Polley - Born CA 1775-1780, Died by May 17, 1847 in Lewis Co Ky.

He wasn't in Lewis Co tax list for 1812 or earlier. The 1813 tax list is missing. He is on the 1814 tax list which says he owned 100 acres on Cabin Creek (bought from James Kelly And Sarah his wife). (James Kelly is listed in 1820 Brown Co census. Brown Co. was formed from Adams Co & Clermont Co in 1818).

This land was transferred in Ripley Oh (Brown Co) June 9, 1820 but appeared on tax lists as belonging to David since 1814. (Tax lists show David has 33 acres more land 1826-1844.)

In 1814 David was in Donovans 69th Malitia regiment. There also is a David Polly in Logans Army volunteer Militia enrolled Sept 10, 1814 to Oct 9, 1814. Several of the men of this list appear to be from nearby Mason Co.

His estate sale was held May 17, 1847 with several items purchased by son John and widow Mrs Nancy Polly

1810 Lewis Co Census

One of the 1810 census indexes lists a Jonathan Polly in Lewis County. Several other indexes for 1810 fail to list Jonathan Polly and a line by line review of the Lewis county census shows no Polly in the 1810 Lewis County census. Tax lists show no Polly in the county until 1814

1820 Lewis Co Census
David Polly, 9 people, 3 in Agriculture
**Names and ages are guesses only based on all information.

3 Males age 0 to under 10 (David Jr 7, John 4, unknown age 0?)
2 Males age 10 to under 16 (Joseph 15, James 12)
2 Males age 26 to under 45 (David Sr age 40 - 45, Jesse? age ?)
1 Female age 10 to under 16 (unknown ?)
1 Female age 26 to under 45 (Nancy 33)

Lewis county records in 1819 indicate David Polly was authorized to keep an insane brother at county expense but don't give the brothers name. A letter written in 1978 to another researcher indicated there was a family bible showing thid David had a brother named Jesse. Several other "facts" in the letter indicates she may have been confusing this generation with Davids grandchildren by son John. I have been unable to locate the letter writer or her family bible record. No other record mentions Jesse or any other brother in Lewis County.

1830 Lewis Co Census
David Polly

1 Male age under 5 (unknown ?)
1 Male age 5 - under 10 (Nathaniel 8)
1 Male 10 - under 15 (John 14)
1 Male 15 - under 20 (David 17)
2 Male 20 - under 30 (unknown?, unknown?)
1 Male 50 - under 60 (David Sr)
1 Female under age 5 (unknown ?)
1 Female age 10 - under 15 (unknown ?)
1 Female age 40 - under 50 (Nancy 43)

Son Joseph had by this time married and died but it appears the widow and kids were not living with David. James (22) also had married in 1829 and was probably living elsewhere unless his wife was the female under 15.

1840 Lewis Co Census
David Polly, 8 people, 4 in Agriculture
projected to be the following

David Polly, age 60-65, in agriculture

Nathaniel O.H. Polly, age 18, in agriculture
Nancy Polly (Dau of Joseph Decd), age 15
Rachael Polly (Daughter of Joseph Decd), age 13

The family next door was David's son
James Polley
5 in family, 1 in agriculture.
Projected to be the following:

James ca. 32 in agriculture

At this point it appears Joseph's widow has possibly died and the grandkids live with David who is their guardian.
