STONEY POINT LIGHTHOUSE

Henderson Harbor, New York
1830, 1869

Stony Point Lighthouse is located on Lighthouse Road in Henderson Harbor. From Lake Ontario it is east of Galloo and Stony Islands.  The 130 year old lighthouse was erected in 1869. The white painted, wooden building consists of a 73 foot tower square tower with an attached keeper's dwelling.  This lighthouse replaced one built in 1830, the foundation of  which still remains.  Stony Point Lighthouse was removed from service in 1945.  It is a privately owned residence situated on two acres of land with over 600 feet of shoreline.

Galloo Island's first lighthouse was established in 1829.  The present lighthouse, a conical stone tower of 60 feet in height has an attached 1˝ story keeper's dwelling.  The gray limestone used to build the lighthouse and keeper's dwelling, which was erected in 1867, was quarried on the island.  Galloo Island is privately owned, while the lighthouse, which is considered excess property, is owned by the U. Situated at the entrance to Sackets Harbor, Horse Island was the site of two battles during the War of 1812.  It served as the British staging area for the second battle with was successfully defended by troops under General Jacob Brown.  The lighthouse itself was erected in 1870 of native brick and is architecturally related to the Stony Point Lighthouse.  Both the  Lighthouse and the island are privately owned and accessible only by boat.  They are not open to the public but they are visible from the Sackets Harbor Battlefield which is open from May through September.

TIBETTS POINT LIGHTHOUSE - Cape Vincent, NY
TIBBETTS POINT LIGHTHOUSE

Cape Vincent, NY
1827, 1854

The Tibbetts Point Lighthouse stands at the entrance from Lake Ontario into the St. Lawrence River and is still an active light maintained by the Coast Guard.  The original tower, built in 1827, was fueled by whale oil and remained in service until 1854 when the present tower was built.  The conical tower is 69 feet of white stucco which once contained a 50 candlepower oil lamp of fixed beam.  It was equipped with a fourth order Fresnel lens.
In 1896 a steam operated fog whistle was added.  It was later replaced, in 1927, by an air diaphone which ran on an automatic timer.  Later the whistle and air diaphone were replaced by a radio beacon to guide the ships.

TIBBETTS POINT LIGHTHOUSE
The lighthouse tower, a two-story residence which was built in 1800, a steam fog signal building, a brick building housing the air compressors built in 1927 and an iron oil house, conspires this historic complex.  The complex had been a U. S. Coast Guard Station until 1981.  Now the Keeper's residence is a hostel - Hostelling International - USA.  This lighthouse has the only classical Fresnel lens still in operation on Lake Ontario.  The Visitors Center and Lighthouse Museum are open from Memorial Day through September, on weekends and daily during July and August.  The Hostel is open May 15 through October 15.  For more information contact Dan and Dorothy Wildermuth, Volunteer Managers, HI-USA Tibbetts Point Lighthouse, 33439 County Route 6, Cape Vincent, New York 13618-3174, Phone: 315-654-3450, or Email: lighthousehostel@tds.net.  Thank you for the info, Don & Dorothy!

EAST CHARITY SHOAL LIGHTHOUSE
Cape Vincent, NY
Rebuilt on Lake Ontario, 1929

This 35 foot, white, cast iron lighthouse once stood off the Lake Erie shore of Vermilion, Ohio.  It was rebuilt in 1929, seven miles off Cape Vincent on the rocky Charity Shoal, on a ten foot black base set on a 12 foot concrete platform.  Ships navigating the St. Lawrence River use the still operating light as a reference point.  It
can be seen from a distance using the Seacoast 20X telescope which was installed at the Tibbetts Point Light in 1997.

 1847, 1882
Visible from Fisher's Landing N.Y., as well as from Thousand Island Park on Wellesley Island, the Rock Island Lighthouse was built in 1882 to replace the the combination lighthouse/keeper's house of 1837.  This is the only light of several on the St. Lawrence that still has the tower and all it's auxiliary buildings.  A fieldstone smokehouse remains from the original structure.  There is also, a generator house built in 1900, a boathouse built 1920 a carpenter's shop form 1882 and the Shingle Style keeper's house built in 1882.
