MISSY & DUKE

Missy - "Love Puppy" &  Duke  -  our "Fluffy Puppy"

This is the first picture we took of Missy,
either the day we got her or the day after.   [Jan. 2000]

This page started out as just a place to temporarily post a few photos of Missy, our little "Pound Puppy" from the Jefferson County SPCA but it has gotten away from me and is now going to be our Pet Page for both of our Rescued Dogs.

For many years my family  had Boxers.  My son grew up with my Mom's Boxer, Lady Ericka and we later got a Boxer of our own, Snuggles.  See our "Memories . . . of Our Beautiful Boxers" page.  When they each went to the Rainbow Bridge it took us quite awhile to be ready for another dog but once we were, we knew it had to be another Boxer Baby!

Jim started dropping by the local (Jefferson County, NY) SPCA every couple of days hoping we could give a home to a Boxer who really needed one.  I refused to go in, knowing if I saw the other dogs in the cages I would feel terrible about leaving them but I "really" wanted a "Boxer".  Months went by without any success.  Our hearts were empty without a Boxer clown in the house.  Finally I decided to apply to one of the Boxer Rescue sites I had seen on the web.  The applications are long and very thorough, as the people running the rescue shelters want to be "very sure" they are finding the right home for the dogs they place.

We were so excited waiting to see if our application would be approved and if we would get the dog we had asked for.  We had actually picked two different dogs that we would be willing to take, in case one had already been taken by the time our application was processed.  Both dogs were fairly small, young females, which is what we were looking for.

Lean on me!  This pound pup is such a "Love Sponge"!

the floor in front of her.  It is one of her favorite toys.
Sharing the chair with 'her' Duke . . . . Missy has a mouth
that is either too small or a tongue and teeth that are too big
because one or the other or both are always sticking out.

During the week we were waiting to hear about our application we made a trip into Watertown and Jim ran into the SPCA "just in case".  He came running out like a mad man insisting I hurry in to see the Boxer they had!  I was reluctant to go in knowing that if I saw the dog I could not go home without it, yet knowing we were already being considered for a Boxer adoption.

There sat a small, sad Boxer girl, shivering in the cage.  She was the exact size we was looking for.  She was a light tan color (not really a fawn) with a completely black face, not at all like our beautiful tiger striped, dark brindle girls with fancy white marked faces.  I had been hoping for a pretty brindle girl, but brindle or not, she was the most pitiful baby.  We asked to take her out of the cage and the staff brought her out to us.  She had just been spayed and was very shy and wary.  The family who had her had turned her in because she supposedly did not get along with their toddler and another child.  She was just 2 years old.

Well, of course I could not leave there without Missy.  We did all the paperwork and loaded her into the back seat with my son, Len and took her home.  She seemed to like the car ride and once home she slowly warmed up to everyone, especially our other dog, Duke.  Jim had rescued Duke years before.  He had been scheduled to be "put down" as a "mean dog".  Duke is a big lover who has never made the slightest nasty move towards man or beast.

I got in contact with the Boxer Rescue group immediately and explained that we had found a Boxer Baby at our local SPCA.  They said that it was no problem that it was great that we were providing a good home to a needy Boxer and that if and when we wanted another one to contact them.

Well, it didn't take Missy any time at all to take over the entire house!  She won us all over with her sweet little tiny face.  Next, because we 'try' to keep the dogs off most of the furniture she took over the foot stool by the window.  This is her favorite spot to check on the neighborhood, watch who is driving in or out of the driveway (when she isn't in the car) and alert us to stray dogs, cats or kids within her view.

Originally, Missy was afraid of "everything".  Loud noises upset her, she even tried to attack the ironing board!  She has clammed down a lot since we first got her, although she still does not like 'strangers' to come into the house; however, when we had a family Christmas party she was a sweet angel all evening.

She slept on Len's bed the first few weeks but then eventually she wanted to be with  Duke who slept in our room.

She took over Duke, claiming him as "hers" and wanting to be near him all the time.  He loves her right back.  I think he really missed having a Boxer Baby in the house.  (Even if they do take over the place.  It's what Boxers do!)

Missy "talks" whenever she wants something; from a ride in the car to a snack.  Sometimes it seems like she wants "something" all the time!!!  She watches TV and wants to be loved and petted all the time.  We call her the Love Sponge!

There is one dog chair in the house which is in the computer room.   It is a first come, first served chair that she has taken over.  Occasionally Duke will beat her to it and this causes an entire Boxer "conversation".  She has even insisted on sharing it fairly often.

She has definitely changed from the shy little girl she was.  Even the color of her coat changed from tan to a beautiful, deep reddish color.

Missy & Duke - Christmas 2000
Both are wearing their Holiday Scarfs.

From that first day when she sat shivering in the cage, Missy has touched our hearts, lifted our spirits and added so much to our lives.  She is the house clown, our baby girl, the love sponge, the walkie-talkie Boxer!  She has so many nicknames it is wonder she even knows her real name.  Sometimes I am not sure she actually does.

She and Duke love to ride together in the car.  They know Saturday night is Pizza Night and she starts "encouraging" Daddy to go get pizza around 5:30 PM.  (She talks 'at' him and runs back and forth to the door.)  She has to go to ride shotgun!

She also knows when it is time to go to the Post Office and makes sure Daddy knows it!

10 PM is Mommy's bedtime and Missy will start looking longingly up the stairs and will want to go out for the last call for the evening.  Then she starts "talking"!  She hates it if I want to stay up to watch a TV show past 10 PM.  Sometimes it is easier to just go to bed!   She gets to sleep in the bed beside me until Daddy comes up, usually a few hours later.  Then she pretends she does not hear him come in the bedroom and stiffens her body to make it harder for him to lift her to the pillows and blankets on the floor next to Duke.  Eventually she snuggles up next to him and goes back to sleep.  They look so cute touching as they sleep.

Our dogs make this house a home and add so much to our lives.  Duke & Missy are definitely blessings in our lives.  (Dog spelled backwards is . . . . God.)

We'd like to publicly thank Linda Miles and her excellent staff at the
Jefferson County SPCA
where we got our wonderful Boxer girl!  We just can't imagine our life without her!
To E-Mail me:  Thank You!
