Who was Timothy?

Timothy was like a son to Paul. He grew up in the city of Lystra in Turkey, and heard about Jesus when Paul went there to preach. Along with his mother and grandmother, Lois and Eunice, Timothy became a Christian. When Paul returned to Lystra a few years later, he found Timothy had grown into a fine young man. Paul invited Timothy to travel with him on his missionary journeys.

Later, Paul left Timothy in charge of the church at Ephesus. The young man had to deal with many problems there. So Paul sent him two letters of advice. First and Second Timothy have served as guidebooks for church workers ever since.

There were no church buildings during this time. Small groups of believers met in homes, each with its own pastor. Timothy had to make sure that all the pastors taught the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was so easy for false ideas to creep in.

Timothy felt timid about taking this important job. Paul wrote, "You are young, but do not let anyone treat you as if you are unimportant. Be an example to show the believers how to live. Show them with your words, your love, your faith, and your pure life. Remember to use the gift that God gave you.

Paul’s second letter to Timothy was written in a Roman dungeon. Paul had been imprisoned again for preaching about Jesus. He had presented his case to the evil Roman emperor Nero. Nero hated the Christians, so Paul did ~ not expect to live. Second Timothy is Paul’s good-bye letter to his "beloved son." He wrote, "My life is being given as an offering to God. The time has come for me to leave this life. I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. Now, a crown is waiting for me, and for all those who have loved God".

WHO WAS TITUS?

On one of Paul’s first missionary journeys, he met a young Greek man named Titus. Titus became a Christian and later served as an important leader of the early church. Titus was a good problem-solver. He first went to Corinth to help the Christians there settle differences of opinion. Much later, Paul asked Titus to work with the church on the island of Crete. There, false teachers were stirring up trouble. Paul wrote his friend a letter full of good advice. That letter is part of the New Testament, the Book of Titus.
