An aquaintance introduced me to the pmu foals. I am interested in rescueing one that is draft or draft cross. I love Clydesdales and Percherons. I am building an organic herb farm and am somewhat interested in working with draft horses. Live Power Far in Covelo does all their work with draft horses. My son and I are also members of the Society for Creative Anachronism and that historical society uses horses as knight transport, etc. I have 10 acres and would be willing to put a bit of it towards a r scued foal. I also have Dexter cows and Icelandic sheep. I hadn't intended to get horses until I retired from the fire dept. but, this rescue situation draws me very strongly.

I do realize the economical situation these farmers find themselves in once they contract w/ Premarin, but if Phillip Morris can start promoting anti-youth smoking ca paigns, Premarin manufacturers can use a fraction of their millions to find homes for all these innocent babies whose mothers make such fortunes for them.

Hi Donna, I have just recently became aware of the premarin issue. My husband Alan & I have just built a home on 20 acres, still have alot of work to do. I have be researching the rescue and adoption sites & that is how I became aware of the PMU issue. We had be n discussing the when's of a new addition for me and the boys when I had come across the PMU sites. At this time there is no possibilty of us having the shelter for a baby. We had discussed 2001 or 02 which is more within our plans and goals. I would l ke to know if there are any rescues in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area that are involved with the PMU foals? I am a 40-something Mother of a 5 yr old and a 2 yr old both boys, have 3 Dalmatians, 3 cats, 3 kittens, 6 zebra finches, and many outdoor feed rs for our wild friends. I have a friend(like my daughter) who is in her final year at Rutger's University in New Jersey (Pre-Vet)...This is the 2nd year that there is a study with the PMU foals...Last year 12 were brought in from North Dakota and in April they had a handling sho at Rutgers and the next day a sale and all the babies went for top dollar and to wonderful homes...Dr. Sarah Ralston is in North Dakota now and has picked out 14 foals and is trying to halter break them before they ship to New Jersey and there will be an ther sale in April 2001...I know this is only a drop in the bucket for some of these foals but its a start..

I raise young hunters that I purchase often as weanlings to be loved and trained as hunters. When they are ready I sell them to "approved" (by m that is!) homes. I love your site. I came back to horses early last year after a 7 year absence. My mare came off a killer truck to a dealers farm. The dealer was going to send her on because she doesnt really like Arabs. This opened my eyes to horse rescue in general. Wh n my mare gets a few years older I would like to save another horse somehow and I am awed by the PMU babies. Maybe there is a way for a Midwest lady to adopt one after all, Thanks!

although i don't really "ride" anymore due to health-i have made a vow to my 23 yr. old ex. race horse-i will NEVER sell him. he has always been too "full of thoroughbred" for an average rider. once i adopted him to a family-thank goodness i did NOT sell him. he came straight back to me and i have never done that again!!! he would've ended up at slaughter. he has a wonderful home with my friend-he is amongst a nice herd of 5 horses he has known or over 10 yrs now. he will never be removed from them-it is his home! it is my promise. thanks for listening

Hi! I was delighted to trip over your website since I am one of those women who must be on HRT Quite recently I picked up a brochure on the PMU farms and was horrified by the information in it. Having raised cattle and dairy goats as well as many kinds of birds and animals, all of the info didn't fit with what I know about livestock producers, but I made an appointment with my GYN, who is also a horsewoman and a very conscentious person. She gave me some other brochures which I didn't exactly buy either be ause I do not trust government and/or especially big business to tell me the truth about anything that has to do with their profit or interests! Your information is first hand and hard to dispute; also, you don't try to claim there are NO instances of bad treatment or poor management in the industry. I am grateful for your information, and while I will probably continue to take premarin out of necessity, I will not have to shudder every time I swallow one. I would also be very interested in adopting a foal or maybe two, though that is in the thinking stage so far. We live in Texas, so the logistics are daunting. I would not need registered stock; nice, healthy foals would do. I have a grandson who is horse crazy like me and we might have fun with a couple o babies! I just wanted to say that I am totally impressed with your goal to save these beautiful animals. How can people be so cruel. I currently live in vancouver BC but I am origionally from NW Ontario, where my family owns a large farm. Some of my first horses ere bought from a PMU farm in Manitoba. Your page is wonderful, informative, and greatly needed to inform people that these foals need to be adopted. I adopted a 25 year old Arabian/QH from a rescue group in October 1999. He is a joy to me, we are still getting to know each other. He was rescued from a slaughter pen. I can't believe people just throw away horses when they have problems or are not ne ded anymore. I also got a computer in October, 1st one ever. I didn't know there was so much abuse in this world. I have been looking at your website and related links about the baby treks for a few hours for the last three evenings. I completely agree with your philosophy regarding supporting, rather than condemning the farmers. The radical activists are great at tr ggering a heart-wrenching emotional response but in the end I feel that their tactics produce a no win situation. I believe that you catch more flies with honey and I am interested, for the sake of the horses, in being effective, more than just being "rig t". I am an artist and my husband and I just moved from Seattle to Montana (bitterroot valley) last year and are adapting to life with property (we both grew up on farms). We have 26 acres which we work on daily to improve. We currently can only accomm date my two horses, but are preparing to build a barn this spring/summer, and add to our fencing, which will increase our pasture/turnout area significantly. My first question to you is this: I would love to adopt a pmu foal (possibly two) but feel that t won't be practical for me to do so until babytrek 200l. I would also like to be involved as a volunteer in some capacity, would Montana be a convenient layover place for babies travelling down from Canada? As I said, it probably won't be practical for me to offer housing until 2001, but meanwhile, is there something I could do this year? I feel particularly interested in attending the sales (I am a visual person and feel that I would like to "see" how it all happens, to increase my understanding). Doe Jan need assistants at the Canada end? I have worked with horses all my life (pony club; graduated from the now defunct Potomac Horse Center; rode dressage with Dietrich and Kim Von Hopfgaarten; close personal friend of Jeremy Steinburg.) My exposure to foals has not been extensive, although I have worked with many young horses. My own horses came from a local farmer and had never been touched or worked with - they'd been running with 20-30 other 2 and 3 year olds in a giant pasture - they were like lit le wild monkeys. I have a flexible schedule because my artwork is licensed worldwide and I'm basically self employed. I can arrange my work load to be available for weeks at a time during the September-October auctions. Do you have a place I might fit?

Hi Donna, Thought I had better update my comments !! Since I found this page I also found your babytrek mail-list...I also found two beautiful PMU babies !! I went to three auctions here in central Alberta last weekend and found two foals to rescue. Both are unpapered but are Quarter Horses..both were being bid on by meat buyers and horse dealers, so, they came home with me !! My filly is a red roan..supposedly, although she also has a lot fo grey in her..a real beauty !! My daughter's little colt is a bay..he is very young..way to young to be away from mom, let alone to have had to gone through all the stress of the shipping nd auction..will not be three months old until my birthday next week !! We will give them both all the TLC we can and hope that they grow to be happy and healthy !!! I'll post pictures of them on the success part of Donna's page when they are developed. Donna..thanks for the inspiration....you gave me the push I need to go to the auction sales and try to make a difference !!!!!!!!! As I said to you before, I would really like to help out..either by giving foals a refuge to stay at until they find homes r to help you out on your yearly trek up this way. Talk to you later !! Jan

Before I get hate mail for last signing please understand I come from realistic farming. I support horse rescue 100%. I just realize that we can only help as many horses and foals as there are homes for and people who can care for them properly. I have bought a rescue horse for my daughter from www.chr.org , even when my ex-husband said he was only good for a year maybe and then send him to a ction for poundage if we couldn't sell him. Not on your life he is an imp but Chammy is the best little horse a beginning rider can ask for. He is just challenging enough to have made a good rider out of a timid girl!!! I would like to find out how to adopt a PMU foalre and we are looking to adopt from CHR again next year (only one adoption of a rideable horse per year). I wouldn't trade my rescue "baby" or my daughter's imp for anything!!!!! We are planing to have a re ucue facility in the future when time and land allow. Thank Donna your site is awsome. My "baby" is now 12yrs old. She was rescued from the auction and I bought her for peanuts. She just was shown at halter for the first time by one of my girls at fair and placed first and then third in Champ class. Rescue babies often can be the best 'ca se you become "mom". Thanks for getting the real stuff out! There are many more horses than can be rescued or that there are homes for, and some are down right dangerous to keep alive. I love horses and don't like to think about any being sent through uction. It's not as much where they go but how they get there and what they endure on the way. The reality is some folks like horse meat and consider us weird. We like beef and some think we are commiting an evil. God gave us dominion over everything nd the right to use it at our will but not the right to abuse it. The abuse is what we really need to stop not the right to earn a living. Thanks again

It took me a little bit to find someone who also believed the way i do.. Most sites i found condem these places and some i found felt the foals should not even be helped because it supports the industry. Well I do not see it that way at all.. The PMU foals pics were lovely. However, the ones brought to Pa.from canada in Sept.98 did NOT look this wonderful!!The non draft crossed looked emaciated and sickly. The filly that I received had a upper resp. infection for over 2 months and was infest d with worms. However, I wouldnt trade her for the world!! :)

Albert, our Appaloosa, was a member of our family for 16 years. He was a backyard pet when we bought him at age 10. Our oldest daughter was also 10. He died of a brain tumor and is buried in the back acre of our 2 acre yard where he lived a happy lif . On his grave, we planted 5 Rose of Sharon bushes and one Poinsettia. The poinsettia is big and beautiful at our Georgia home this Christmas. The Rose of Sharon has lovely pink flowers from about May through September or even October. He loved Rose of Sh ron bushes. How do I know? He loved to eat them! We never let him get close enough to a poinsettia to taste one so I don't know if he would have liked it.

Hi Donna, Came back to look at pmu babies and consider viable options. I love pintos, draft and draft Xs, arabs, and 99.9% of all others! I only have geldings (mares are just to moody! :) and I only really ride bareback. I prefer to break my horses myself (thus explaining my green-broke 22 and 14 yr. old horses...well, it keeps other people off 'em!) I have a rotty, 2 fat cats, a very accomodatig husband and 2 great kids. Just moved to KY, a lifelong dream, and am putting together plans for the farm we pla to buy next summer.

Don't have anything o do with pro events of rodeo or show types, but love to watch such. I was a barefoot, bareback little cowgirl, the only horse person in my family who learned everything raw and on my own or from "old cowboy" pals of mine. I was the only ten year old gi l whose best buddies were old cowboys. Really old, I mean, not the sort to even think of doing anything except dropping words of wisdom about horses and letting a thrilled little kid express her delight in such talk and in the riding itself.
What type of horse do you own?: I own one quarter horse, 12 year old, just bought a week ago and he's come up lame. May be abcess. Bummer like crazy. I hadn't had a horse in a few years and was REALLY NEEDING TO RIDE! Now I gotta fuss with leg l stuff and vet stuff and, well, never mind, sorry to vent to YOU! Hah!

Say, I think all I wrote above make pretty sufficient comments, okay? :-) I was really thrilled to find this page, Donna. I am a 48 year old woman who is very fit and vigorous, after having a knee replaced and also a hysterectomy, both within the las two years. I always was fit and active, from childhood through all my life as much as possible but could not always keep a horse. Live on a lower end of the caste scale, and have very little money on a secretary's salary to allow me to own a horse. BU WHEN I HAVE A CHANCE, MAN DO I EVER LOVE TO RIDE! One of those horse-CRAZY little girls whose parents got tired of hearing, from about age 3, "I want a horse!" :-D Guess you're the same way, going by the parts of your site I've seen so far (and that's just the first page, I'll check out the rest of it now). Just wanted to rattle off a few comments, and see if you mean it when you say "we" are the reasons for keeping your wonderful page alive! Let me hear something from you. By the way, I FOUND you as I was doing a search trying to help diagnose this new horse's lameness. Found David's Worlds and then onto his Horse Resources...then to you. Damn, girl, ain't this Web world something else!!! You seem like someone I'd like to stay in touch with, but whatever happens along those lines, just please do keep this terrific page of yours going, and going and going.....!!
